Campgrounds near Bennington, Vermont
Bennington sits in the southwest corner of Vermont, at the meeting point of the Green Mountains, the Berkshires, and the Taconic Range. RV travelers use it as a base for southern Vermont because it is close to both Wilmington and Manchester if you need civilization, and because several public and private campgrounds sit within a short drive of downtown.
The closest options span two states worth of park systems. Pine Hollow Campground and Greenwood Lodge and Campsites are private operations serving the immediate Bennington area, while Camping on the Battenkill sits along the Battenkill River to the north. Woodford State Park sits on Route 9 between Bennington and Wilmington, and Clarksburg State Park is a short drive south across the Massachusetts line.
Options range from full hookups at private grounds to rustic tent, lean-to, and small-RV sites at the state parks. At 2,400 feet, this 398-acre park has the highest elevation campground of any park in Vermont, and Woodford is located on a mountain plateau surrounding Adams Reservoir. That elevation matters for trip planning: temperatures at Woodford run noticeably cooler than in the valley.
Things to do near Bennington
Water recreation anchors most trips. The campground has 103 sites including 20 lean-tos, flush toilets, token-operated hot showers, and a dump station are provided, there is a small beach and picnic area near the dam, and there are several hiking trails, including a 2.7 mile trail around the lake. Adams Reservoir is stocked with brook trout, and fishing is allowed from the shore or from a boat. At Clarksburg State Park, the pond is surrounded by 9.5 miles of foot trails along which visitors may observe a variety of wildlife, and perhaps a moose, the three mile Pond Loop Trail is popular with birdwatchers, the easy Shoreline Trail has beautiful water views, swimming is restricted to a designated swimming area, and non-motorized boating is welcome.
Off the water, the town itself carries the Bennington Battle Monument, the Bennington Museum, and the Old First Church. The Molly Stark Trail (Route 9) links Bennington east to Brattleboro, and the Green Mountain National Forest borders Woodford, adding trailheads for longer hikes.

The camping season in this corner of New England is short and defined by state park calendars. Vermont State Parks, which run Woodford, open in late spring and close in mid-fall; Woodford is open Memorial Day weekend to the 2nd weekend in October. Massachusetts DCR runs a similar window at Clarksburg, generally opening in spring and closing in October.
Summer is peak. July and August bring the warmest weather and the fullest campgrounds, and waterfront sites at both state parks book out early. Fall is the second peak: the spruce, fir and birch forest offers spectacular fall colors and hiking opportunities, and foliage weekends in late September and early October fill quickly.
Winter closes the state park campgrounds to RVs. Private grounds around Bennington operate on their own schedules, so confirm dates directly. Cross-country skiing is popular in winter with a trail beginning at the parking area north of Route 9 at Woodford, but overnight camping there is not an option once the season ends.
How to book campgrounds around Bennington
Vermont State Parks handle Woodford through a central reservation system. Camping reservations can be made up to 11 months in advance on a rolling basis. Reservations made more than 7 days in advance require a two-night minimum, and one-night stays are allowed within 7 days of arrival, any day of the week.
Massachusetts DCR runs Clarksburg State Park through ReserveAmerica. Reservations can be made up to 4 months prior to your arrival date. Reservations are required and no walk-in camping is allowed.
Private campgrounds near Bennington, including Pine Hollow Campground, Greenwood Lodge and Campsites, and Camping on the Battenkill, book directly through their own websites or by phone. Reserve early for July, August, and foliage weekends.
What to expect on the ground
Expect wooded sites, cool nights, and limited hookups at the state parks. Clarksburg offers 46 well-spaced and wooded campsites located near Mausert's Pond, with a restroom with flush toilets and showers available, and campsites that accommodate tents, pop-up trailer and small RV. Sites do not have hookups and there is no dumping station at this facility. Woodford is similar in style, with tent/RV sites, lean-tos, and cabins around Adams Reservoir, plus flush toilets and a dump station.
Bring bear-aware habits. Black bears can be visitors to this campground, bears are wild and can be dangerous, keep all food, coolers, cooking supplies and equipment in the food storage lockers provided, do not keep food or toiletries in your tent or camper, and please do not feed or approach bears. Firewood rules are strict on both sides of the border: Massachusetts prohibits the transportation of firewood into or out of any DCR campground, and firewood must be purchased at the campground. Ticks are common in the surrounding forest, so pack repellent and check daily.

Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee (typically $25 to $75 per stay) and bring a picnic blanket, several Bennington breweries like Madison Brewing have dog-friendly patios.

Filter by Delivery on the search page to see hosts who offer it. Delivery fees typically run $2 to $4 per mile from the host's location. Pro tip: delivery is perfect for first-time renters who want the camping experience without towing a trailer up Route 9.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Bennington,VermontWhere are the best campgrounds near Bennington?
You're spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Bennington include Woodford State Park (about 10 miles east on Route 9, Vermont's highest state park campground at around 2,400 feet elevation with a swimming pond), Greenwood Lodge & Campsites in Woodford (full hookups, hiking trails, and an on-site pond), Emerald Lake State Park (about 35 minutes north near East Dorset with a sandy beach), and Camping on the Battenkill in Arlington (riverside sites perfect for trout fishing). For RV camping Bennington families especially, Woodford State Park is a local favorite. Pro tip: Vermont State Parks open for reservations on a rolling 11-month window, so book early for July and foliage weekends.
vtstateparks.com/When is the best time to take a Bennington RV trip?
Bennington shines in three distinct seasons. Late September through mid-October is iconic, foliage peaks around Columbus Day weekend with daytime highs in the 55 to 65°F range and crisp 35 to 45°F nights, perfect for campfires. Summer (June through August) delivers warm 75 to 82°F days, swimmable ponds, and the annual Bennington Garlic Festival in early September. Late May and June offer fewer crowds, blooming wildflowers, and lower nightly rates. Winters get genuinely cold (lows often near 10°F with heavy snow), so most RV rentals run April through late October. Pro tip: book foliage weekends 4 to 6 months out, they're the single busiest time of year in southern Vermont.
weather.gov/aly/I've never rented an RV before. Is Bennington a good place to start?
Bennington is one of the friendliest spots in New England for first time renting an RV. The town sits at the crossroads of three quiet routes (US Route 7, Historic Route 7A, and Route 9), so you won't face dense urban traffic. Every RVezy host provides a full orientation at pickup, walking you through the generator, slide-outs, water systems, and dump procedures before you drive off. You can also message hosts in advance with questions, and many offer delivery so you skip driving entirely. Pro tip: start with a 2-night shakedown trip at Woodford State Park, only 10 miles away, before tackling a bigger Vermont loop.
vtstateparks.com/woodford.htmlWhat if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing. If the issue is mechanical or something inside the RV stops working, message your host directly through the RVezy app, they know their rig best and can troubleshoot quickly. RVezy's customer support team is also available before, during, and after your trip. Full-service RV repair shops are available in the Bennington area and just over the border in Williamstown, MA. Pro tip: cell service is solid in downtown Bennington but spotty on Route 9 through Searsburg, so screenshot key phone numbers before heading into the Green Mountains.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trips from Bennington?
An RV road trip from Bennington puts three states and dozens of bucket-list stops within easy reach. Head north on Route 7A for the Manchester outlets and Stratton Mountain (about 45 minutes). Drive east on Route 9 for Brattleboro and the Connecticut River Valley (about 1 hour). Cross into Massachusetts for the Mohawk Trail and North Adams' MASS MoCA (about 30 minutes). Loop west to Lake George, NY for beaches and amusement parks (about 1.5 hours), or push further to Lake Placid (about 3 hours). You can travel into other US states with your RVezy rental. Pro tip: travel to Mexico is not permitted, and crossing into Canada requires confirming with your host first since insurance validity and host approval are required.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Bennington RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable in your trip budget, but Bennington's compact geography keeps it manageable. Expect about 8 to 10 MPG for a Class A, 10 to 14 MPG for a Class C, and 16 to 20 MPG for a campervan or truck towing a small trailer. Vermont gas prices typically run slightly above the national average, with the lowest local prices usually at Stewart's Shops and Cumberland Farms along Route 7. A typical 3-night, 200-mile loop through southern Vermont can range from about $80 to $150 in fuel depending on the rig. Pro tip: fill up in Bennington before heading east on Route 9, gas stations get scarce between Wilmington and Brattleboro.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Bennington?
For peak weekends, the sooner the better. Vermont State Parks (including Woodford and Emerald Lake) use a rolling 11-month reservation window through the official Vermont State Parks reservation system, and foliage weekends in early October sell out quickly after opening. Summer holiday weekends (July 4th, Labor Day) typically fill 2 to 3 months ahead. For private parks like Greenwood Lodge or Camping on the Battenkill, 4 to 8 weeks of lead time is usually enough mid-summer. Mid-week stays in June or late August are often available a few days out. Pro tip: if a Vermont State Park is sold out, check back in the evenings, cancellations often release inventory after hours.
vtstateparks.com/reservations.htmlWhat are driving conditions like around Bennington?
Driving in and around Bennington is refreshingly easy compared to most New England destinations. The town has no interstate highways through its core, just well-maintained two-lane state routes with generous shoulders. Route 9 east toward Brattleboro climbs over Hogback Mountain with steep grades, so descend in a lower gear, especially in a larger motorhome. Route 7A north to Manchester is the scenic flat-and-easy option. Watch for moose and deer at dawn and dusk in Woodford, and be aware that winter brings significant snow (the town averages around 70 inches annually). Pro tip: nervous about mountain driving? Choose a Class B or C under 25 feet, they handle Vermont's curves beautifully.
newengland511.org/Where can I dump tanks and fill water near Bennington?
You'll find solid options without going far. Woodford State Park (about 10 miles east on Route 9) and Emerald Lake State Park (about 35 miles north) both have public dump stations and potable water fills available during the May to October season for a small fee, often around $10 to $15 for non-campers. Greenwood Lodge & Campsites in Woodford and Camping on the Battenkill in Arlington offer full hookups at most sites including water, 30/50-amp electric, and sewer. Most Vermont State Park campgrounds offer hot showers and flush toilets but limited full hookups. Pro tip: top off fresh water at your host's home before pickup, Vermont's water is famously clean and your tank stays fresh longer.
vtstateparks.com/What amenities are included in a typical Bennington RV rental?
More than you'd expect. A typical motorhome rental Bennington travelers book sleeps 4 to 8 and includes a full kitchen (fridge, stovetop, microwave, sink), a wet or dry bathroom with a hot-water shower, a dinette that converts to a bed, climate control with both furnace and air conditioning, and seatbelts for travel. Most rigs come with a generator or solar setup for boondocking, and many hosts include linens, cookware, outdoor chairs, and a starter kit of essentials. Wi-Fi hotspots and TVs are common add-ons. A campervan rental Bennington adventurers choose is more compact but perfect for solo travelers and couples. Pro tip: check the listing's amenity list and message the host if you need something specific like a pack-n-play or bike rack.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Bennington,VermontWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
RVezy hosts in Bennington offer a range of helpful extras. Common add-ons include linens and bedding packs ($25 to $75), kitchen kits ($25 to $50), generator hours ($3 to $5 per hour beyond what's included), bike racks, propane fire pits, and camping chairs. Many hosts also offer delivery and setup priced per mile. Standard pickup is at the host's address in or near Bennington with a 30 to 60 minute orientation walkthrough, and most listings include 100 to 150 free miles per night. Pro tip: bundle delivery, linens, and a kitchen kit on your first trip, you'll arrive at the campsite with nothing left to do but light the campfire.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Bennington,VermontHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book an RV rental in Bennington through RVezy, you pay through the platform with a credit or debit card, no cash is exchanged with the host. A refundable security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig) is placed as a hold on your card before pickup and released after a smooth return. The security deposit is separate from your booking payment. To avoid any deposit issues, do a thorough walkthrough at pickup, take time-stamped photos and videos of any existing wear, return the RV with fuel and propane at the agreed levels, and empty the tanks if your host requires it. Pro tip: the in-app messaging creates a paper trail, use it for any pickup or return notes.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Bennington in winter or shoulder seasons?
Yes, and winter in southern Vermont is genuinely magical for the right traveler. While most hosts run April through late October, a growing number of Bennington-area owners offer four-season rigs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and shore-power connections that handle Vermont's cold (January lows average around 10 to 15°F). Winter renters typically stay at private parks with full hookups since most state parks close after Columbus Day. You'll be about 30 minutes from skiing at Mount Snow and 45 minutes from Stratton. Pro tip: ask the host specifically about heated tanks, propane capacity, and skirting, and plan to stay at a campground with 50-amp shore power so you can run the furnace freely without draining batteries.
