Campgrounds near Saint Albans City
Saint Albans City sits in northwestern Vermont near the eastern shore of Lake Champlain, roughly a half hour north of Burlington and under two hours from Montreal. The area combines lake access, dairy country, and the Champlain Islands, giving RV travelers a mix of state park campgrounds and private resorts within a short drive.
Closest to town, Maple Grove Campground offers a straightforward base for families exploring the region. On the islands to the west, Apple Island Resort sits along US Route 2 in South Hero and is easy to reach by road without a ferry, designed for RVers who want more than a simple overnight stop. Sunset Rock RV Park & Lake Shore adds another lakeside option along the same corridor.
For state park camping, Grand Isle State Park sits on South Hero Island in Lake Champlain and is the second-largest campground in the Vermont system, with 115 tent/RV sites, 36 lean-to sites, and 4 cabins. North of Saint Albans, Lake Carmi State Park is the largest Vermont State Park campground, with 138 tent/RV sites, 35 lean-to sites, and 2 cabins.
Things to do near Saint Albans City
Lake Champlain drives most of the recreation. Grand Isle State Park offers swimming in Lake Champlain, a boat launch available to campers, kayak rentals from the park office, and fishing for a variety of species. The park also has sand-court volleyball, horseshoes, a play area, and bike rentals inside the gate.
At Lake Carmi, families can paddle protected water and explore the natural areas. Most of the 140-acre bog lies within the state park and is a designated State Natural Area, set aside for the preservation and protection of unique ecological, geological, or scenic values. Anglers target northern pike, walleye, smallmouth bass, and other warm-water species.
Cyclists can pick up the Missisquoi Valley Rail Trail, and the Champlain Islands offer orchards, farm stands, and short drives back to Burlington for dining and provisions.

28° / 14°F 75 mmFreezing and snowy; state park campgrounds closed
The Vermont State Parks camping season runs roughly mid-May through mid-October, with Lake Carmi and Grand Isle both closed to overnight camping outside that window. Private resorts follow a similar rhythm, opening in May and wrapping up in October. Winter travel to the area is possible, but expect limited overnight RV options and snow-covered park roads.
Summer is peak season. Lakefront sites and lean-tos book out early for July and August weekends, particularly at Grand Isle, the most-visited campground in the Vermont system. Reserve well in advance for holiday periods and prime lakeside locations. Black flies and mosquitoes are heaviest from late May into June, then taper.
Early fall brings cooler nights, quieter campgrounds, and foliage color from late September into mid-October in this northern part of the state. Spring shoulder weeks can be wet and muddy, so campers arriving in May should be prepared for cold nights and variable lake conditions.
How to book campgrounds near Saint Albans City
Vermont State Parks use a single central reservation system for both Grand Isle and Lake Carmi. As of February 2026, reservations open daily on a rolling 11-month window at 9 a.m., giving 30 or 31 booking opportunities each month instead of a single monthly release. For popular summer weekends, plan to book close to that opening window.
Reservations made more than 7 days in advance require a two-night minimum, while one-night stays are allowed within 7 days of arrival, any day of the week. Note that Vermont State Parks do not offer RV hookups at any park, though Grand Isle and Lake Carmi both have RV dump stations and drinking water.
Private parks such as Apple Island Resort, Maple Grove Campground, and Sunset Rock RV Park & Lake Shore book through their own websites or third-party platforms.
What to expect at campgrounds near Saint Albans City
Most campgrounds in the area are lakeside or lake-adjacent, with a mix of open and wooded sites. At Grand Isle, sites have no hookups, but the park provides drinking water, flush toilets, hot showers, trash collection, and an RV dump station. Expect gravel or grass pads rather than concrete, and about half of the sites are large enough for self-contained RVs.
Lake Carmi runs a bit more rustic and remote. The campground operates with a gated entry system, providing campers with PIN access codes at check-in, and sites range from primitive tent spots to lakefront lean-tos and two cabins. There are no electric, water, or sewer hookups at sites, though a dump station is available. Cell service in the area is limited.
Private resorts on the islands feel more developed, with paved interior roads, on-site amenities, and open sightlines to the lake in exchange for less tree cover.

vtstateparks.com/carmi.htmlWhen is the best time of year to rent an RV in Saint Albans City?
Late May through mid-October is prime time for an RV trip in Saint Albans City, with daytime highs typically in the high 70s to low 80s in July and August and cool, comfortable nights perfect for campfires. September and early October are the secret sweet spot: temperatures usually sit around 55 to 70 degrees, the bugs are gone, and Vermont's fall foliage lights up the Green Mountains in red and gold. Winters are genuinely cold with frequent snow, so most campgrounds close from mid-October through early May. Pro tip: book your foliage-week RV rental by July, peak leaf-peeping demand fills calendars fast in Franklin County.
weather.gov/btv/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay in Saint Albans City?
You're going to be just fine. Saint Albans City is one of the friendliest places in New England for first time renting an RV. Roads are wide, traffic is light, and Interstate 89 is just minutes away with easy access to the rest of Vermont. Every RVezy host provides a thorough walkthrough at pickup, showing you exactly how to operate the slides, generator, water systems, and dump valves, and you can message them anytime during your trip. Class C motorhomes and travel trailers handle especially well on Vermont's two-lane roads. Pro tip: if highway driving feels intimidating, book delivery so the host parks and levels the RV for you at your campground.
vtrans.vermont.gov/What happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You're covered around the clock. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the standard protection plan, so if you get a flat on Route 105 or your battery dies at Kill Kare State Park, help is one phone call away. The roadside team handles tire changes, jump-starts, fuel delivery, lockouts, and towing to a qualified service shop. Your host is also reachable directly through the RVezy app and is usually your fastest line for quick questions about appliances or systems. Pro tip: save the RVezy support number and your host's contact in your phone before leaving Saint Albans City, cell service can dip in remote spots like the Northeast Kingdom.

Interstate travel to New Hampshire, New York, Massachusetts, and Maine is generally welcomed and ideal for a New England loop. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental. Pro tip: bring your passport, and remember border agents will ask about firearms, cannabis, and pets.

Most Class C motorhomes around Saint Albans City get 8 to 10 miles per gallon, Class B campervans average 18 to 22 MPG, and trailers depend on your tow vehicle. Vermont gas prices typically run slightly above the national average in Franklin County. For a 4-day, 300-mile loop hitting Burlington, Stowe, and back to Saint Albans City, budget roughly $120 to $200 in a motorhome. Pro tip: fuel stations on Route 7 in Saint Albans City often have better prices than those right off the interstate, so plan your fill-ups accordingly.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Saint Albans City?
Earlier is better, but you have options. Vermont State Parks (including Lake Carmi, Burton Island, Grand Isle, and Kill Kare) open reservations well in advance through the official Vermont State Parks reservation system, and waterfront sites for July, August, and foliage weekends fill quickly. Private parks like Apple Island Resort and Homestead Campground near Saint Albans City typically accept bookings 6 to 12 months out. For a last-minute Saint Albans City RV trip, aim for mid-week stays in late May, early June, or after Labor Day. vtstateparks.com/reservations.htmlWhat are driving conditions like around Saint Albans City?
Driving an RV in and around Saint Albans City is refreshingly stress-free. Interstate 89 runs right past town with wide lanes and gentle grades, and local roads (Route 7, Route 105, Route 36) are paved, well-maintained, and rarely congested. Watch for a few things: low-clearance covered bridges in rural Franklin County (signed, but always check your RV's height), occasional dirt roads in spring mud season, and snow or black ice from November through March. Deer are common at dawn and dusk, so ease off the throttle in low-light hours. Pro tip: skip Smugglers' Notch (Route 108) in anything larger than a Class B, the switchbacks prohibit larger RVs and tractor-trailers.
vtrans.vermont.gov/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Saint Albans City?
You will find a great mix. Most private parks near Saint Albans City (Homestead, Apple Island Resort) offer full hookups with water, 30/50-amp electric, sewer, Wi-Fi, hot showers, laundry, and dump stations. Vermont State Parks like Lake Carmi and Grand Isle offer water at many sites plus a central dump station and potable water fill, though full sewer at each site is rarer. Lake Champlain access means swimming beaches, kayak rentals, and boat launches are common perks. Pickup is typically at the host's address, but delivery to a Lake Champlain campground or your driveway is widely available. Pro tip: bundle add-ons at booking, hosts often discount the total when you grab multiple extras.

Pro tip for your Saint Albans City RV rental: take a quick video walkaround of the RV at pickup and drop-off, hosts and renters both appreciate this habit because it makes deposit returns smooth and disputes rare.

Yes, winter RV rentals in Saint Albans City are possible and are a memorable way to experience Vermont's snow season near Smugglers' Notch, Jay Peak, and Stowe ski resorts. Look for listings marked as four-season or winterized, these rigs have heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, propane furnaces sized for cold nights, and skirting options. Most Saint Albans City area campgrounds close after Columbus Day, but private hosts often arrange driveway delivery to ski lodging or year-round parks. Daytime temps in January typically range from the teens to low 30s with overnight lows often in the single digits. Pro tip: ask the host about shore power requirements and a heated water hose, both make winter Vermont RV trips genuinely cozy.
