Campgrounds near South Shaftsbury, Vermont
South Shaftsbury sits in Bennington County in southwestern Vermont, along the VT 7A corridor between Bennington and Arlington. The village is close to the Green Mountain National Forest to the east and the Battenkill River valley to the north, which puts a mix of state park, private, and riverside campgrounds within a short drive of an RV renter's arrival point.
One of the closest developed options is Greenwood Lodge and Campsites, a family-run property off Route 9 in Woodford, roughly 8 miles east of Bennington, with 40 total sites including 23 RV sites with water and electric hookups and a dump station on property. Camping on the Battenkill in Arlington sits directly on the Battenkill River with a mix of RV and tent sites. Pine Hollow Campground and Lake Lauderdale Campground round out the private options within roughly a half-hour drive.
For a state park stay, Woodford State Park surrounds Adams Reservoir at 2,400 feet, the highest-elevation state park campground in Vermont.
Things to do near South Shaftsbury
Water activities anchor most trips in this corner of Vermont. Woodford State Park has a small beach and designated swimming area on Adams Reservoir, boat rentals for canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards, brook trout fishing, and a 2.7-mile trail that loops the lake. Camping on the Battenkill offers direct river access for swimming, tubing, canoeing, and fly fishing, with the Battenkill known as a strong trout stream.
Greenwood Lodge and Campsites sits on a wooded property with ponds and its own trails, plus quick access to the Appalachian Trail and Long Trail crossings on Route 9 nearby. Off-site, families use the campgrounds as a base for Bennington's historic district and Battle Monument, the Robert Frost Stone House Museum in Shaftsbury, Mount Equinox, and covered bridge tours in Arlington.

The core camping window in southern Vermont runs from Memorial Day weekend through the second weekend in October. Woodford State Park operates on that state-park calendar, and Greenwood Lodge and Campsites opens seasonally from late May through late October. Camping on the Battenkill typically runs from late spring into mid-October, giving RV renters a slightly earlier shoulder-season option along the river.
Summer is peak. July and August bring warm days, warm-enough water for swimming, and the highest occupancy at both private and state park sites. Late September through mid-October is fall-foliage season across Bennington County, and higher-elevation spots such as Woodford turn color earlier than the valley floor. Nights get cold quickly at elevation, so furnace use is common by early October.
Winter shuts most area campgrounds down. Snow typically covers the ground for parts of November through April, and RV travelers looking for cold-weather stays should confirm which private parks, if any, keep hookups active off-season.
How to book campsites near South Shaftsbury
Woodford State Park is reserved through the Vermont State Parks system, with camping reservations opening up to 11 months in advance on a rolling daily basis. Reservations made more than 7 days out require a two-night minimum, while one-night stays are allowed within 7 days of arrival any day of the week. For summer weekends and foliage weekends, book as early as the 11-month window allows.
Private campgrounds handle their own bookings. Greenwood Lodge and Campsites, Camping on the Battenkill, Pine Hollow Campground, and Lake Lauderdale Campground each take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Holiday weekends and July through mid-October fill first, so lock in dates well before the trip.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a mix of full-service private parks and simpler state park loops. Woodford State Park has 76 tent/RV sites, 20 lean-tos, and 4 cabins, with flush toilets, token-operated hot showers, and a dump station, but no individual hookups at the sites. Greenwood Lodge and Campsites provides water and electric hookups at its RV sites plus a dump station on property, with tent sites available in wooded and meadow areas. Vermont rules prohibit bringing untreated firewood into state parks from out of state.
Cell service is spotty in the Green Mountain National Forest and thinner at elevation around Woodford. Roads into the smaller private campgrounds can be narrow, so larger Class A and fifth-wheel drivers should confirm site access in advance. Nights run cool even in July at higher elevations, so pack layers regardless of the forecast in the valley.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=South%20Shaftsbury%2C%20VermontDo I need a special license to rent an RV in South Shaftsbury, VT?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in South Shaftsbury, VT, whether you're picking up a campervan, a travel trailer, or a Class C motorhome. Vermont does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for any standard recreational vehicle on the RVezy platform, so your everyday Class D license from any US state or Canadian province works just fine. You'll need to be 25 or older to book, and RVezy verifies your ID right through the app, no DMV trip required. Visiting from overseas? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your home license. Once that's sorted, you're free to point the wheels toward Route 7A and the Green Mountains.
dmv.vermont.gov/licenses/types-of-licenses-ids/drivers-licenseWhat protection and roadside assistance is included with my booking?
Every RV rental in South Shaftsbury, VT books with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance included, so you can drive Route 7A and the Molly Stark Byway with real peace of mind. RVezy's protection plans cover physical damage to the vehicle (it's not traditional auto insurance, but it provides meaningful financial protection), and you choose your coverage level at checkout, not the host. If you get a flat heading up to Woodford State Park or the battery dies at a trailhead, one call gets help dispatched any hour of the day or night. That's especially reassuring on Vermont's quieter back roads, where cell service can be spotty.

Booking is genuinely low-risk: RVezy (not the host) sets the cancellation policy, so you'll see the same platform-wide process on every listing. Refund eligibility depends on how far out your trip is from the start date at the time you cancel. If a host cancels on you, RVezy helps you rebook or issues a refund or travel credit. Pro tip: if a nor'easter or early snowstorm is rolling toward Bennington County, message your host and contact RVezy support promptly, they're available before, during, and after every trip to help you sort it out.

Just check the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see hosts who welcome four-legged co-pilots. Lake Shaftsbury State Park allows leashed dogs on trails like the Healing Springs Nature Trail year-round (just not on the swim beach during open season), and nearby Woodford State Park and Emerald Lake State Park are equally dog-friendly. The Battenkill River trails in nearby Arlington are also a hit with retrievers who love a cold dip. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee and ask if they provide bowls or a pet bed, many do, which means less to pack from home.
vtstateparks.com/shaftsbury.htmlCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near South Shaftsbury?
Yes, RV delivery in South Shaftsbury is one of the smartest moves for first-timers and families who'd rather skip towing or driving a big rig down Route 7A. Many local hosts will deliver to Lake Shaftsbury State Park, Woodford State Park, Emerald Lake State Park in East Dorset, or a private driveway in Bennington or Manchester. They'll level the RV, hook up water and power where available, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Just toggle the Delivery filter on RVezy and enter your destination. Pro tip: Vermont state parks don't have hookups, so ask your host to top off the fresh water tank and confirm propane is full before they leave.
vtstateparks.com/camping.htmlHow far can I drive on a typical mileage allowance from South Shaftsbury?
You can cover serious ground from South Shaftsbury without burning through your mileage. vtstateparks.com/shaftsbury.htmlWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from South Shaftsbury?
South Shaftsbury rewards visitors in three very different seasons. Late June through August is classic summer with daytime highs around 78 to 82°F, warm enough for swimming at Lake Shaftsbury but cool enough at night (50s) for campfires. The crown jewel is foliage season, roughly the last week of September through mid-October, when the Green Mountains explode into reds and golds along Route 7A. May and early June are quieter, greener, and great for cheap RV rental in South Shaftsbury deals. Winters are cold (often in the teens to low 30s) with snow, so check listings carefully for winter-ready RVs. Pro tip: book foliage dates 4 to 6 months ahead, this stretch sells out fast across all of Bennington County.
weather.gov/aly/I've never rented an RV before. Will I really be okay?

You can also message hosts before booking with any question, no matter how basic. If something comes up mid-trip, 24/7 roadside assistance is included with every booking. For nervous first-timers, a Class C motorhome rental in South Shaftsbury or a smaller travel trailer is the friendliest starting point. Pro tip: pick a quiet first night at Lake Shaftsbury State Park (just 3 miles up Route 7A) so you can get comfortable before bigger adventures.
vtstateparks.com/learn.htmlWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
Help is one phone call away, 24 hours a day. Every booking on RVezy includes roadside assistance with the protection plan. Your host is also typically your first text, they know their RV best and can often troubleshoot small issues in minutes. RVezy support is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: save the roadside number in your phone before you leave South Shaftsbury, cell service can get patchy in the Green Mountain National Forest just east of town.

Westward, you're 50 miles from Saratoga Springs, NY and 60 from Lake George in the Adirondacks. East on Route 9 (the Molly Stark Trail Scenic Byway) takes you 40 miles to Brattleboro through the Green Mountain National Forest. Southbound, the Berkshires of Massachusetts are just 35 miles away. Cross-border trips into Canada are possible with some hosts (Montreal is 240 miles north), but message before booking to confirm insurance coverage. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals.
vtrans.vermont.gov/How should I budget for fuel on a South Shaftsbury RV trip?
Fuel is one of the most predictable parts of your budget. Bennington County consistently posts some of the lowest gas prices in Vermont, recent AAA data showed regional regular gas around $2.98 to $3.42 per gallon depending on the week. A Class C motorhome typically gets 8 to 10 miles per gallon (MPG), while smaller campervans can hit 18 to 20 MPG. For a 300-mile weekend loop in a Class C, plan on roughly $90 to $115 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Bennington (Route 7 or Northside Drive stations) before heading north toward Manchester or east on Route 9, prices typically tick up in resort towns. Bring a fuel rewards app to shave a few cents per gallon.
fueleconomy.gov/feg/gasprices/states/VT.shtmlHow far in advance should I book a campground near South Shaftsbury?
For Vermont State Parks like Lake Shaftsbury, Woodford, and Emerald Lake, the reservation window opens through the official Vermont State Parks reservation system, and new dates are released in one-month blocks. For summer weekends (mid-June through Labor Day) and especially foliage season (late September to mid-October), book 4 to 6 months out, prime weekends often fill within days of release. Midweek summer stays and shoulder-season visits can often be snagged just a week or two ahead. Private campgrounds like Greenwood Lodge & Campsites in Woodford tend to book up similarly. Pro tip: if your dream weekend is sold out, set a cancellation alert, last-minute openings pop up regularly, especially after the Tuesday cancellation deadline.
vtstateparks.com/campingWhat are the local driving conditions like around South Shaftsbury?
Driving an RV around South Shaftsbury is refreshingly low-stress compared to bigger metros. Route 7A is a smooth, well-maintained two-lane road with gentle grades and stunning Green Mountain views, perfect for first-timers. Route 9 east toward Woodford and Brattleboro climbs to about 2,300 feet with curvier sections, so take it slow in a larger Class A or Class C. Watch for occasional moose and deer at dawn and dusk, especially near the Green Mountain National Forest. Winter brings snow and ice from late November through March, so studded or all-season tires matter if you're renting off-season. Pro tip: avoid the narrow village center of Old Bennington with a big rig, stick to Route 7 (Northside Drive) which has wider lanes and easier turns.
vtrans.vermont.gov/highway/maps-and-dataWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near South Shaftsbury?
Vermont's campgrounds are charmingly rustic and well-kept. Lake Shaftsbury State Park has flush toilets, hot showers, a sandy swim beach, and a snack bar concession, but no electric, water, or sewer hookups at sites. Woodford State Park (15 miles east) offers 103 wooded sites, flush toilets, hot showers (for a small fee), and a dump station. Emerald Lake State Park (25 miles north) has a dump station, showers, and boat rentals. For full hookups, Greenwood Lodge & Campsites in Woodford is your best bet. To dump tanks and fill freshwater, plan on the state park dump stations or Greenwood. Pro tip: top off your freshwater tank before heading into any Vermont state park since onsite spigots can be limited to a central fill point.
vtstateparks.com/campingWhat features and amenities can I expect inside the RV?
Most RVs available for a motorhome rental in South Shaftsbury come fully equipped for self-contained adventures: a real bed (or two or three), a kitchen with fridge, stovetop, microwave and sink, an indoor bathroom with shower, dining area, and seatbelted seating for travel. Climate control is included via furnace and air conditioning, and many rigs feature an onboard generator, solar panels, or both, perfect for off-grid nights at Lake Shaftsbury State Park where there are no hookups. Some hosts add Wi-Fi hotspots, smart TVs, and outdoor speakers as add-ons. Pro tip: when comparing listings for a family RV trip in South Shaftsbury, check the sleeps count and seatbelt count separately, some RVs sleep more people than they can legally transport on the road.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=South%20Shaftsbury%2C%20VermontWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Vermont hosts tend to be generous with the extras that make a trip easier. Common add-ons for RV rental Vermont bookings include linens and towel packages ($30 to $60 per trip), kitchen kits, bikes, kayaks (handy for paddling Lake Shaftsbury), camp chairs, outdoor grills, and Wi-Fi hotspots. Generators are usually included with motorhomes but may be metered. Pickup is often right at the host's South Shaftsbury or Bennington driveway, and RV delivery in South Shaftsbury to a state park or your rental home is widely offered, usually $2 to $4 per mile each way. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a generator package on a family RV trip in South Shaftsbury, you'll save unpacking time and start your vacation hours earlier.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=South%20Shaftsbury%2C%20VermontHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and handled entirely through the RVezy platform, no cash exchanged with the host. You'll pay your rental total at booking using a major credit or debit card, which secures your dates. A refundable security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) is placed as a temporary hold on your card before pickup and released after the trip once the host confirms the RV came back clean and undamaged. To avoid any deposit hiccups: take date-stamped photos at pickup and dropoff, dump the tanks before return, refuel to the agreed level, and tidy up. Pro tip: review the listing's mileage, generator-hour, and cleaning fees up front so there are zero surprises after your Green Mountains adventure wraps up.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in South Shaftsbury during winter?
Yes, winter RVing around South Shaftsbury is a genuinely magical adventure if you pick the right rig. Look for listings that mention heated and enclosed holding tanks, a strong propane furnace, and shore-power hookup capability, these are essential when temperatures drop into the teens (or lower) from December through February. Lake Shaftsbury State Park's developed campground closes after the second Monday in October, but winter group lean-to permits are available, and nearby Prospect Mountain (cross-country skiing) and Bromley Mountain (downhill, 20 miles north) make for spectacular base-camp trips. Pro tip: message your host directly to ask about winterization status, snow tires, and whether they recommend a campground with electric hookups (try Greenwood Lodge area or private RV parks in New York just over the border) to run your heater continuously without draining batteries.
