Campgrounds and RV parks near Buena Vista, VA

The Blue Ridge Parkway is the main draw. Mileposts 60 through 63 include the James River Visitor Center, the restored Battery Creek Lock on the historic Kanawha Canal, and short hikes such as the Trail of Trees and Otter Lake Loop. The Otter Creek Trail runs about 3.5 miles from the campground to the James River Visitor Center, paralleling the Parkway through a low-elevation valley. South of town, Natural Bridge State Park anchors a cluster of family attractions including Natural Bridge Caverns, Virginia Safari Park, and Dinosaur Kingdom II. The Appalachian Trail crosses the area, with trailheads within short driving distance of Natural Bridge Station. Lexington, about 15 minutes west, offers historic downtown walking, Washington and Lee University, and the Virginia Military Institute Museum. Fishing, tubing, and canoeing on the James River are popular from late spring through early fall.

Camping season centers on May through October. Otter Creek Campground is typically open from late May until the end of October, though official opening and closing dates shift slightly each year. Private parks near Natural Bridge and Lexington generally run longer seasons, with some sites open year round. Summer brings the heaviest bookings. Weekends at Jellystone-branded resorts fill weeks in advance during school break, driven by pool, splashground, and character programming. Blue Ridge Parkway sites also see peak demand in July and August, with cooler evenings at higher mileposts along the ridge. Fall foliage, usually peaking in mid October, is the second peak: reserve early and expect slower Parkway traffic due to leaf-season visitors. Spring is quieter, with wildflowers and running creeks, but overnight lows can still drop near freezing into April. Winter is off season for most tent and Parkway camping, and sections of the Parkway close during ice and snow events. Confirm gate status before routing an RV over the mountain.

Site type varies sharply by operator. At Otter Creek, both RV and tent sites are available, each equipped with grills, picnic tables, and lantern posts, and shared amenities include flush toilets, drinking water, and a dump station. There are no electric hookups at Parkway campgrounds, and generator hours are restricted. Private resorts offer a different experience. Jellystone Park At Natural Bridge provides pull-through and back-in RV sites with full hookups including 30 and 50-amp electric, water, sewer, and cable TV, plus a resort pool, splash park, swim lake, fishing pond, dog park, miniature golf, arcade, laundry, propane fill, and dump station. Roads to Parkway campgrounds are winding with grade changes, so large rigs should plan routes carefully. Bears are active in the region, so store food and trash in hard-sided vehicles or provided lockers.
