Camping near Kilmarnock, Virginia
Kilmarnock sits near the tip of Virginia's Northern Neck, the peninsula between the Rappahannock River and the Potomac River where they meet the Chesapeake Bay. The area is flat, rural, and shaped by tidal water, which drives the camping scene: most RV parks front a river, a creek, or a marina rather than sitting inland in the woods.
RV travelers typically base themselves at one of the large resort-style parks on the Rappahannock. Bethpage Camp-Resort has more than 1,000 sites and operates from late March through mid-November, and accommodates RVs up to 70 feet with full hookups including 50-amp electric service. Grey's Point Camp is another large Rappahannock-area property. Bush Park Camping Resort and Cross Rip Campground offer smaller alternatives, and Smith Point Marina anchors the northeastern corner of the Neck where the Potomac meets the Bay.
Public camping is limited but notable: Belle Isle State Park, in Lancaster on the lower Rappahannock, is the closest state-run campground with electric and water hookups.
Things to do around Kilmarnock
Water activities dominate. Belle Isle State Park includes 892 acres and 7 miles of shoreline on the lower Rappahannock River in Lancaster County, borders Deep and Mulberry creeks, and supports boating, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, hiking, biking, horseback riding, and wildlife viewing across tidal wetlands, marshes, and upland forests. Wildlife observed includes blue herons, osprey, hawks, bald eagles, white-tailed deer, and various reptiles and amphibians.
Families with kids tend to stay on-property at the resort parks. Bethpage Camp-Resort centers on a water park complex featuring three large slides, along with pools, a swimming lake, playgrounds, miniature golf, and an on-site ice cream shop. Grey's Point Camp offers Rappahannock River access, pools, a beach, a marina, walking trails, pickleball, volleyball, basketball, dog parks, and playgrounds.
Off-site, downtown Kilmarnock has walkable shops and restaurants, and the region is known for Chesapeake oysters and small-boat fishing charters.

The camping season on the Northern Neck runs roughly late March through mid-November. Most private parks close over winter: Bethpage Camp-Resort operates from late March to mid-November, and Grey's Point Camp runs on a similar seasonal schedule. Belle Isle State Park's full-service campground operates seasonally from the first Friday in March through the first Monday in December, while Brewer's Point primitive camping is available year-round.
Spring and fall are the mildest windows for RV travel. Summer brings a full slate of on-property programs at the resorts but also higher humidity and larger crowds, and winters are cool and quiet, with most private parks closed. Summer is peak family-vacation season at the water-park resorts, and holiday weekends fill months in advance. Late summer and early fall coincide with the Atlantic hurricane season, which occasionally forces evacuations or short-notice closures along the Bay.
Early November is oyster-festival season in Urbanna, and nearby campgrounds book out heavily for that weekend.

What to expect on the ground
Terrain is flat and low, sites are usually grassy or paved, and shade varies by park. The large Rappahannock resorts have wide roads suited to bigger rigs. Cell signals near Belle Isle are spotty, with Verizon, AT&T, and U.S. Cellular generally working best. Coverage is more reliable closer to Kilmarnock and Urbanna. Bring bug spray for tidal mosquitoes, especially at dusk in summer.
Groceries, marine supplies, propane, and dump stations are easy to find in Kilmarnock, White Stone, and Urbanna. Belle Isle is remote enough that grocery stores sit about 25 minutes away by car, so plan supply runs accordingly.
