Campgrounds and RV parks near Onley, VA

Onley sits in the middle of Virginia's Eastern Shore, a narrow strip of farmland and salt marsh between the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic. The town works well as an RV base because it is roughly 20 minutes from Chincoteague, close to Wallops Island, and within easy reach of both bayside and seaside campgrounds. US-13 runs the length of the peninsula and is the main route to reach every major campground in the area. Options nearby range from full-hookup RV resorts to a state park across the Maryland line. Virginia Landing RV Campground and Tall Pines Harbor Waterfront Campground sit closest to Onley on the bay side, while Sun Outdoors Chincoteague Bay and Trails End Campground Resort are oriented toward the Chincoteague and Assateague beaches. Janes Island State Park, just outside Crisfield on Maryland's Eastern Shore, offers a quieter, paddle-focused alternative with a campground, rental cabins, a lodge, and a boat ramp and marina. Most RV travelers use Onley as a hub for pony viewing, beach days at Assateague, kayaking the marshes, and seafood on the water.

Private RV parks around Onley, including Virginia Landing RV Campground, Tall Pines Harbor Waterfront Campground, Trails End Campground Resort, and Sun Outdoors Chincoteague Bay, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Summer weekends and the Pony Penning week fill first, so booking several months ahead is standard for full-hookup and waterfront sites. Janes Island State Park uses the Maryland state system. Reservations can be made online at parksreservations.maryland.gov or by calling 1-888-432-2267, and sites can be booked up to 365 days in advance. Cabins and waterfront sites tend to book earliest. For day trips into Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, note that an entrance pass is required, with entrance free for visitors planning to hike or bike into the refuge.
