Spring and fall are the busiest seasons for RV travel in central Virginia. Spring brings dogwood and redbud bloom in April and May, with mild days and cool nights. Fall foliage peaks along Skyline Drive from mid-October to early November, and campgrounds on and near the parkway book out well in advance for those weekends. Summer is warm and humid with afternoon thunderstorms common. Heavy seasonal downpours or afternoon thunderstorms can occur during the warmer months. Higher-elevation sites at Loft Mountain run cooler than the valley floor, which is a draw for tent and RV campers escaping the heat. Private resorts with pools, such as Misty Mountain Camp Resort and Shenandoah Crossing Resort and Country Club, see peak family demand from late June through mid-August. Winter is cold with regular snowfall. All Shenandoah park campgrounds are open spring through fall, closing in winter when Skyline Drive often sees snow and ice. Private campgrounds in the Charlottesville area often stay open year-round with limited services.

Terrain around Rio is rolling piedmont transitioning to steep mountain grades as you approach Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge. Drivers of larger rigs should note that Skyline Drive has a tunnel with limited clearance at Mary's Rock and winding, low-speed sections; check clearance before entering the park from the north. Loft Mountain offers 207 campsites and amenities like flush toilets, water and dump stations, with pay showers nearby at the campstore. Sites are dry camping with no hookups. Private resorts in the area typically offer water, electric, and sewer, plus Wi-Fi, laundry, and pool access. Cell service is spotty on the ridge and reliable in the Charlottesville area. Shenandoah has a very large bear population, and bears travel through campgrounds daily; all scented items must be stored inside the food storage bin except while eating. Expect deer and wild turkey along roads at dawn and dusk.
