The town serves as a practical base for RV travelers exploring the tri-state region where West Virginia, Kentucky, and Ohio meet, with campgrounds spread across state parks and private RV parks.
The closest public option is Yatesville Lake State Park across the state line in Lawrence County, Kentucky, a Kentucky State Parks property on a 2,242-acre reservoir managed with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Beech Fork State Park lies to the east near Huntington and Barboursville, offering the largest concentration of sites in the area. Creekside Cabins and RV Park and The Falls Campground provide smaller, private alternatives close to the river valley.
For travelers wanting full hookups and family amenities, the Ashland / Huntington West KOA Holiday in Argillite, Kentucky rounds out the options within an easy drive of Fort Gay. Things to do near Fort Gay
Water recreation anchors most trips. Yatesville Lake offers boating and fishing, with the Yatesville Marina serving houseboats, pontoons, speed boats, and jet skis. Anglers report catches of catfish, bass, bluegill, and crappie. The park also has an 18-hole par-71 Eagle Ridge golf course built on mountainous terrain, part of the Kentucky State Park System's Signature Series.
At Beech Fork, families spread out across the park's 3,144 acres. The 720-acre lake supports boating, fishing, and swimming, with over 50 miles of hiking and biking trails weaving through wooded terrain. A seasonal swimming pool and playgrounds round out the on-site options.

The RV season in this part of the Ohio Valley runs long, but availability varies by campground. At Beech Fork State Park, the Old Orchard full-hookup loop is open year-round, while the Moxley Branch, Four Coves, and Lakeview areas run on a seasonal schedule that generally opens in spring and closes in mid to late fall. Travelers planning shoulder-season trips should confirm loop-specific dates with the park before arrival.
Summer is the busy stretch. Holiday weekends and school-vacation weeks fill fastest at the state parks and the KOA, so booking months ahead is normal for June through August. Spring and early fall bring cooler temperatures, lower humidity, and easier site selection, along with strong bass fishing on both Yatesville and Beech Fork lakes.
Winter camping is limited to the year-round loops. Kentucky State Parks cannot guarantee water or other resources at campgrounds during inclement weather months when freezing temperatures are possible, so travelers should contact the park directly for available hookups during those months.
How to book campgrounds near Fort Gay
Reservation systems vary by operator. At Beech Fork State Park, campsites may be reserved anytime online, by phone, or at the campground office through the West Virginia State Parks reservation system, with a minimum of two consecutive nights required on Friday and Saturday weekends and one night Sunday through Thursday. Yatesville Lake State Park bookings run through the Kentucky State Parks reservation system online or by phone. Reservations must be made at least one day ahead of arrival and can be made up to twelve months in advance, and early booking is recommended for holiday weekends and peak season.
The Ashland / Huntington West KOA Holiday books directly through the KOA website or by calling the campground, with pull-throughs, patio sites, and cabins listed separately.
What to expect at area campgrounds
Site quality and hookups differ noticeably across the properties. The 49-site Old Orchard loop is full hookup with water, sewer, and 20, 30, or 50 amp electric service, plus coin laundry and free Wi-Fi. Moxley Branch, Four Coves, and Lakeview offer electric-only or mixed electric and non-electric sites.
At the Ashland / Huntington West KOA Holiday, RV sites are full hookup and slide-out friendly, with 50 amp pull-throughs available. Amenities include a 24-hour laundry, campground store, two covered picnic pavilions, two playgrounds, miniature golf, a swimming pool, and a stocked fishing pond.
Creekside Cabins and RV Park and The Falls Campground tend to be quieter with fewer resort-style amenities but easy river access.
