Charleston and Huntington provide grocery, fuel, and RV-service stops, and the surrounding Kanawha, Cabell, and Mason County countryside gives travelers quick access to hiking, paddling, and cultural stops without long transit days.
Things to do near Hometown
Kanawha State Forest, roughly a half-hour south of Charleston, is the nearest large public land. The 9,300-acre forest is noted among naturalists for its diverse wildflower and bird populations, and it draws birders looking for its nesting habitat for 19 species of wood warblers. Trails cover hiking, mountain biking, and cross-country skiing terrain, and the on-site swimming pool opens on Memorial Day weekend and closes for the season on Labor Day.
Point Pleasant, about an hour northwest along the Ohio River, is home to the Mothman Museum and the annual Mothman Festival, which fills the downtown with vendors, speakers, and TNT-area tours on the third weekend of September. The Charleston area has a humid subtropical climate with warm, humid summers and cold, sometimes snowy winters. July is typically the hottest and wettest month, with an average daily high near 86°F and roughly five inches of rain, most of it delivered by afternoon thunderstorms. Winters bring measurable snow, and January averages about 8.6 inches of snowfall as the coldest month.
Late spring and early fall are the most comfortable stretches for RV camping. Mid-April through June and late August through mid-October generally deliver mild days, lower humidity than midsummer, and reliable trail conditions. Travelers should still plan for scattered showers year-round and check river levels before paddling.
Seasonal closures matter. Kanawha State Forest's campground runs from April 1 through the first Saturday in December, with reservations available. Many other state-run sites also shut for winter, while private parks along I-64, including the Huntington / Fox Fire KOA Holiday, tend to stay open year-round with reduced amenities in the cold months.
How to book near Hometown
Private campgrounds near Hometown, including Statts Mills RV Park, Huntington / Fox Fire KOA Holiday, Little Coal River Campground and Cabin, and Lazy K's Campground and Canoe Livery, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. KOA sites can also be booked through the KOA reservation system, and travelers should confirm holiday-weekend policies when locking in dates.
West Virginia State Parks handles bookings for state-run campgrounds such as Kanawha State Forest online, by phone, or at the campground office. Reservations may be made for no less than two consecutive nights on weekends (Friday and Saturday) or one night Sunday through Thursday, and there is a 14-night maximum stay.

What to expect near Hometown
Sites near Hometown range from full-hookup RV parks with cable and Wi-Fi to rustic state-forest loops with limited connectivity. At Kanawha State Forest, the 46-site camping area is served by two bathhouses and coin-operated laundry facilities, all sites have fireplaces and picnic tables, 25 sites feature electricity and water hookups, firewood and ice are available, and a dump station is available for campground guests. Private parks along I-64 handle larger rigs and slide-outs without issue. Expect interstate road noise at parks close to the highway, and expect thunderstorms and quick water rises on smaller rivers during summer afternoons. Bring insect repellent, layered clothing for cool evenings, and offline navigation for state-forest access roads.
