Campgrounds and RV parks near Algoma, WI

Lake Michigan charter fishing is the signature activity out of the Port of Algoma. Captains target Chinook (king) salmon, coho, steelhead, and lake trout, with peak action from June through October and the largest kings typically caught in late summer and early fall. The Ahnapee State Trail runs 48 miles across Door and Kewaunee counties along the Ahnapee and Kewaunee rivers, connecting Sturgeon Bay, Algoma, Casco, Luxemburg, and Kewaunee on a level crushed-limestone rail grade. It is open to biking, walking, horseback riding, and, in winter, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing. Sections of the corridor also carry the Ice Age National Scenic Trail. Timber Trail Campgrounds and Ahnapee River Trails Campground both sit near the trail and offer river access for kayaking and canoeing. In town, families can walk Crescent Beach and its boardwalk, tour von Stiehl Winery, and use Algoma as a base for day trips into Door County villages such as Sturgeon Bay, Egg Harbor, and Fish Creek.

The private campground season around Algoma runs roughly May through October, matching Wisconsin's frost-free window. Ahnapee River Trails Campground, for example, operates from May 1 through October 31, and most nearby parks follow a similar schedule. Sites are closed and winterized outside those months. July and August are the busiest weeks, driven by Door County traffic, Lake Michigan fishing, and school-holiday families. Waterfront and full-hookup sites at Timber Trail Campgrounds, Ahnapee River Trails Campground, and Kewaunee RV and Campground LLC often fill weeks in advance for weekends, and holiday weekends around Independence Day and Labor Day book earliest. Late May, early June, and September are the quieter shoulder windows. Bug pressure drops after early summer, salmon fishing peaks in August and September, and fall color along the Ahnapee River generally arrives in early to mid October. Winter camping is not available at Algoma-area private parks, though the Ahnapee State Trail remains open for snowmobiling and cross-country skiing.

Expect a rural, small-town setting rather than a resort atmosphere. Roads leading to Big Lake Campgrounds, Timber Trail Campgrounds, and Cedar Valley Campground are paved county highways with occasional gravel access lanes, generally manageable for most rental RVs but tight in spots. Cell coverage is reliable in Algoma and Kewaunee and can drop in low-lying river valleys inland. Hookups at nearby private parks are typically 30-amp electric with water, plus a shared dump station rather than full sewer at every site. Heated pools, playgrounds, and laundry are common features, and Ahnapee River Trails Campground offers all three along with Wi-Fi and pull-through sites. Lake Michigan keeps evenings cool even in July, so bring layers. Mosquitoes and biting flies peak in June near the river and wooded interior sites; sites closer to the lake are usually breezier and less buggy.
