Campgrounds and RV parks near Almena, WI

The Cattail State Trail runs 18 miles on a former rail corridor between Almena and Amery, passing through Turtle Lake, and is open year-round to ATVs and to snowmobiles when snow-covered. A 30-acre ATV intensive-use area sits about four miles east of the village, built in partnership between Barron County and a local ATV club, with a large parking lot, loading ramp, shelter, picnic tables, and permanent restrooms. Fishing is the other main draw. Local lakes hold walleye, largemouth bass, northern pike, muskie, and panfish. Shadyside Park in the village adds a playground, softball field, picnic pavilion, and a small RV facility with water and electric hookups. Golfers can book tee times at Rolling Oaks Golf Course in Barron, about ten miles away. Rice Lake and Cumberland, both within roughly 20 miles, add restaurants, groceries, and boat launches.

The camping season around Almena is short and concentrated. Most private campgrounds run from around Memorial Day through early October, with peak demand from late June through mid-August. July is typically the warmest month, with average highs near 78 degrees Fahrenheit and the most sunshine of the year. Spring is slow to arrive in this part of Wisconsin. March and April can still see snow, and the Cattail Trail extension in Barron County is generally closed during the spring thaw and reopens around May 1. May brings green-up, active fishing, and the start of the mosquito season. June is the wettest month of the year, averaging around 90 to 120 mm of rain, so sites can be soft early in summer. Fall brings cool nights, color in the hardwoods, and quieter campgrounds through September and early October. The Cattail Trail extension typically closes in mid-October for hunting season before reopening for snowmobiles. Winter is long and cold, with subzero lows common in January and February; most private RV parks close, while snowmobile and ice-fishing traffic takes over.

Campgrounds in this part of Wisconsin skew small and family-run rather than resort-scale. Expect gravel or grass sites, 30-amp electric as the common standard, and full hookups at only a portion of sites. Larger rigs should confirm site length and turning access when booking, since some older lakefront parks have tighter interior roads. Cell coverage is generally usable along U.S. Highway 8 and in the village but can drop off at some lakeside sites. Groceries, fuel, and propane are available in Turtle Lake and Barron, both within about ten miles. A Wisconsin State Park vehicle admission pass is required at state properties and is separate from any campsite fee. Only certified firewood or wood sourced within 10 miles of a state park may be brought in, a rule aimed at slowing invasive pests. Bear-aware food storage is a sensible habit in the surrounding county forests.
