Campgrounds near Altoona, Wisconsin

Altoona sits on the eastern edge of the Eau Claire metro in west-central Wisconsin, wrapped around Lake Altoona, a reservoir on the Eau Claire River created by a county-owned dam. The city is a practical base for RV travelers exploring the Chippewa Valley, with grocery stores, fuel, and dump stations within a short drive of most sites. Most of the RV inventory sits just north in Chippewa Falls, roughly 15 to 20 minutes from Altoona. Private parks in that cluster include O'Neil Creek Campground, a large family-oriented property with full-hookup sites, and Pine Harbor Campsite near Lake Wissota. Eagle Ridge Campground and Country Villa Motel Campground add further options within the same corridor. Public camping in the area is administered by the Eau Claire County Parks and Forest Department, headquartered in Altoona, which operates county park campgrounds such as Coon Fork Lake. Lake Wissota State Park, run by the Wisconsin DNR, is the closest state-park option and books through the statewide reservation system.

Things to do near Altoona

Water recreation drives the summer calendar. Lake Altoona County Park offers a boat launch, swim area, and shoreline picnic grounds on the reservoir, while Lake Wissota supports fishing for walleye, muskie, bass, and panfish. O'Neil Creek Campground has a shallow creek suited to tubing and family play, and the Chippewa River system links several public accesses for paddling. On land, the paved Old Abe State Trail runs about 20 miles between Lake Wissota State Park and Brunet Island State Park at Cornell, following an abandoned rail grade along the Chippewa River. Beaver Creek Reserve east of Altoona has nature trails, an observatory, and a summer program schedule. Downtown Eau Claire, a short drive west, adds restaurants, breweries, and the Phoenix Park farmers market for supply runs between trips.

The main camping season runs from late April or early May through mid-October, matching the Wisconsin State Park System calendar. July and August bring the warmest, wettest conditions and the heaviest booking pressure, especially around Independence Day and Labor Day weekends. Holiday weekends typically require a minimum three-night reservation at state properties. Late spring and early fall are the strongest windows for RV travelers who want cooler nights and easier site selection. May sees rapid greening but variable weather, and September delivers stable days, thinning bug pressure, and color change through late October. Water services, flush restrooms, and shower buildings at state properties may be shut off during the off-season. Winter camping in the Chippewa Valley is limited. Lake Wissota State Park remains open year-round, though campers should contact the park office for winter availability. Camping seasons vary by property, and most private RV parks close their water systems before hard freeze.

Renting from Anthony was great!! He was very prompt, explained everything with the camper very thoroughly and was incredibly nice and accommodating. The camper was very clean, well-kept and in great condition! The generator is basically brand new and very easy to use; starts with the push of a button! Bathroom was clean and worked! Whenever we had a question, we received timely responses from Anthony and he was very open to help, it was never a bother. If we ever have a need for a camper again, we will ABSOLUTELY reach out to Anthony again, I highly recommend using this camper!! 5 stars for sure!!

Anthony was very helpful. He met me at the campground, set up the camper, walked me through everything, and showed me the ins and outs of his camper. I told him I wanted to leave early on the day of departure. He said no problem; just leave the key in it, and he’d pick it up later the day I left. He made the entire experience so much easier for us. Thanks a lot, buddy.

How to book a campsite

For Lake Wissota State Park and other Wisconsin State Park System properties, reservations are handled through the state's system at wisconsin.goingtocamp.com or by phone at 1-888-947-2757. Sites can be booked up to 11 months in advance of the arrival date, and popular electric loops fill months out for summer weekends. A Wisconsin State Park vehicle admission sticker is required in addition to the campsite fee. Eau Claire County parks such as Coon Fork Lake use a separate reservation system operated by the Eau Claire County Parks and Forest Department, based in Altoona. Private parks including O'Neil Creek Campground, Pine Harbor Campsite, Eagle Ridge Campground, and Country Villa Motel Campground book directly through their own websites or by phone. Weekends around Country Jam and other Chippewa Valley events sell out early.

What to expect on site

Site style varies widely across the area. Private parks near Chippewa Falls tend toward tightly spaced full-hookup sites with camp stores, arcades, and organized weekend activities aimed at families. O'Neil Creek Campground, with roughly 400 sites, is at the higher-amenity end and can feel busy during event weekends. Pine Harbor Campsite is smaller and closer to Lake Wissota, with a mix of seasonal and transient sites. State and county campgrounds trend toward wooded, more spacious sites with electric or non-electric options and shared water spigots. Certified firewood or wood originating within 10 miles of the park is required at Wisconsin state properties to slow the spread of invasive pests. Cell coverage is generally reliable across the Chippewa Valley. Mosquitoes peak from late May through early July.
