Campgrounds near Amherst, Wisconsin
Amherst sits in central Wisconsin's Portage County, a short drive from the Chain O' Lakes and the Waupaca area. The village is a practical base for RV travelers exploring Hartman Creek State Park, the Ice Age National Scenic Trail, and the small lakes that dot the surrounding countryside. Stevens Point lies roughly twenty minutes west, providing groceries, propane, fuel, and RV service.
Campground options in the area range from a state park family campground to private RV parks with full hookups. Hartman Creek State Park anchors the public side with wooded sites, a sand beach on Hartman Lake, and multi-use trails. Nearby private options include Wild West Campground and Corral, Fountain Lake RV Park Inc, Royal Oaks Legendary Lodging Campground, and Deerhaven Campground, each offering a different mix of hookups, cabins, and family activities.
Roads in the area are generally flat and well maintained, making access easy for larger rigs. Most parks are reachable via State Highway 54, US 10, or county roads off Interstate 39.
Things to do near Amherst
Hartman Creek State Park is the outdoor centerpiece. Visitors can swim at the sand beach on Hartman Lake, paddle the Chain O' Lakes, and fish for bass, bluegill, crappie, northern pike, and trout. The park carries a segment of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail along with additional hiking loops, off-road biking trails, and dedicated bridle trails.
Guided trail rides, hayrides, and horseback riding are available at Wild West Campground and Corral, which operates as a working horse ranch. Families often combine a day at the state park with a visit to the town of Waupaca for the Chain O' Lakes boat tour, ice cream, and small shops. Stevens Point adds breweries, the Green Circle Trail, and a walkable downtown.

The core RV season in central Wisconsin runs from mid-April through October. Hartman Creek State Park's family campground accepts reservations from April into November, and private parks in the area follow a similar spring to fall pattern. Summer brings warm days, warm lake temperatures, and the busiest weekends, particularly around Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day.
Spring is cool and wet, with mud on unpaved trails and biting insects picking up by late May. Fall delivers crisp mornings, hardwood color through late September into October, and quieter campgrounds after Labor Day. Bug pressure drops sharply once nights turn cool.
Winter is cold and snowy. Both the family and group campgrounds at Hartman Creek State Park are closed from December 1 through April 1, and most private RV parks close as well. Snowshoeing, ice fishing, and cross-country skiing replace paddling and swimming during this stretch.
How to book
Reservations at Hartman Creek State Park go through the Wisconsin State Parks reservation system at wisconsin.goingtocamp.com, with a booking window that opens up to eleven months ahead of the arrival date. A Wisconsin State Park vehicle admission pass is required for every motor vehicle entering the park and can be purchased in advance or at the property.
Private parks are booked directly. Wild West Campground and Corral, Fountain Lake RV Park Inc, Royal Oaks Legendary Lodging Campground, and Deerhaven Campground each take reservations by phone or through their own websites. Summer weekends and any date near a holiday fill first, so booking well ahead for July and August is prudent.
What to expect on site
Hartman Creek State Park's family campground has 103 sites set in either a red pine forest or an old apple orchard and hardwood mix, with two shower and flush toilet buildings and a mix of electric and non-electric sites. Each site includes a picnic table and a fire ring with a grill. Cell service can be spotty inside the park.
Private parks in the area typically offer water and electric, with sewer available at select sites. Wild West Campground and Corral provides water and electrical hookups, with sewer on some sites, plus showers, flush toilets, and Wi-Fi. Expect a mix of wooded and open sites, on-site firewood sales, and quiet hours enforced after dark. Bring bug spray for spring and early summer, and a warm layer for evenings even in July.

Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering driving, hookups, slide-outs, and dumping, so you're never sent off guessing. If you're first time renting an RV and still nervous, choose a smaller Class C motorhome or campervan rental in Amherst, or book a host who offers delivery straight to your campsite. Pro tip: practice a few right turns and a backup in an empty lot before heading to Lake Emily, you'll feel like a pro within an hour.

Your host is also a quick text away for questions about the RV's quirks, like resetting the inverter or relighting the water heater. Pro tip: save the roadside assistance number and your host's contact info before you leave Amherst, just in case you hit a spot with weak cell service up north.

You can freely travel to Minnesota (Twin Cities are about 250 miles west), Michigan's Upper Peninsula (Porcupine Mountains around 290 miles north), Illinois, and Iowa. Cross-border travel to Canada may be allowed depending on the specific host and insurance terms, so message the host directly before booking if you're dreaming of Thunder Bay or Lake Superior's north shore. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental. Pro tip: a classic 7-day loop from Amherst hits Door County, then Mackinac Island via the U.P., and circles back through northern Wisconsin's lake country.

Class C motorhomes typically get 8 to 12 mpg, while larger Class A rigs run 6 to 10 mpg. Gas prices in central Wisconsin generally track close to the national average, and you'll find competitive pricing at Kwik Trip locations throughout Portage and Waupaca counties (Wisconsin's beloved chain, and a great snack stop too). Pro tip: top off in Stevens Point or Waupaca before heading into the Northwoods, since stations get sparser and pricier the farther north you drive past Wausau.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Amherst?
For the best campgrounds near Amherst, plan ahead but don't panic. Wisconsin State Parks like Hartman Creek and Council Grounds open reservations 11 months in advance through the Wisconsin DNR's reservation system, and prime summer weekends (especially July 4th and Labor Day) fill within hours. Portage County parks like Lake Emily and Standing Rocks book through the county's online system and typically have more last-minute availability. Private parks fill up about 2 to 3 months ahead for peak weekends. Pro tip: midweek stays (Sunday through Wednesday) are almost always wide open, and pair perfectly with quieter visits to Central Waters Brewing in downtown Amherst.
wisconsinstateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are the driving conditions like around Amherst?
Driving an RV around Amherst is genuinely relaxed. The terrain is gently rolling farmland with no mountain passes or tight switchbacks, and main routes like US-10, WI-49, and WI-161 are well-maintained two- and four-lane highways. Watch for occasional deer at dawn and dusk (Portage County has an active deer population), Amish horse-drawn buggies on rural roads east of town, and farm equipment during planting and harvest seasons. Winter brings snow and ice from November through March, so most RV rentals run May through October. Pro tip: avoid driving in heavy thunderstorms common in late afternoon during July, and pull off at a Kwik Trip until the cell-tracked storm passes.

Most Wisconsin state parks have centralized dump stations and water fill, and you'll find a public dump station at Rivers Edge if you need one between trips. Many listings also offer a generator for off-grid power, outdoor speakers, awning, TV, and even Wi-Fi boosters. Class B campervans are more compact but include the essentials. Pickup and dropoff times are set by the host (often 1 PM pickup, 11 AM return) and are clearly listed on each listing along with the mileage policy. co.portage.wi.us/department/parksHow do payments and security deposits work on RVezy?
Payment for your Amherst RV rental is simple and secure: you pay directly through RVezy with a credit or debit card when you book, never in cash to the host. A refundable security deposit is held (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) and released after your trip if there's no damage or extra fees like excess mileage or generator hours. You'll see the exact deposit amount on each listing before booking. To avoid issues, do a thorough walk-around with your host at pickup and dropoff, snap timestamped photos, and dump tanks if your host requires it. Pro tip: keep gas receipts and refill the propane and fuel to the same level as pickup, this keeps your deposit refund quick and clean.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat's the best cheap RV rental option for a family trip from Amherst?
For a budget-friendly family RV trip in Amherst, look at travel trailers in the 20 to 25 foot range, often the cheapest RV rental in Amherst at $90 to $130 per night, especially if your family already has an SUV or pickup capable of towing. If you don't tow, a smaller Class C motorhome that sleeps 5 to 6 with bunks is the sweet spot. Book Sunday through Thursday for lower nightly rates, choose a host offering delivery to Lake Emily County Park to save fuel, and pack groceries from the Stevens Point Pick 'n Save. Pro tip: a 4-day midweek family RV trip from Amherst to Hartman Creek State Park can come in well under $800 total, including the campsite.
