Campgrounds and RV parks near Benton, WI

The Driftless landscape around Benton suits slow driving, cycling, and river time. Yellowstone Lake State Park offers swimming, paddling, and hiking on quiet trails, while the Mississippi River bluffs west of Benton give access to fishing, boat launches, and river-town stops like Cassville and Potosi. Families staying at Palace Camp Ground or Lake Joy Campground are within short drives of Galena, Illinois, with its restored 19th-century main street, and of the Mines of Spain Recreation Area near Dubuque, Iowa. Popular family stops include the Dickeyville Grotto, the Cassville car ferry across the Mississippi, and the walkable historic districts of nearby river towns. Road cyclists use the Cheese Country and Pecatonica state trails to the north, and anglers target smallmouth bass on the Grant and Platte rivers.

The RV season in southwestern Wisconsin generally runs from late April through mid-October, matching the opening dates of most Wisconsin state park campgrounds. Private parks near Benton, including Rustic Barn Campground & RV Park and Coconut Cove RV Resort, typically operate on a similar calendar, with some extending shoulder-season stays for self-contained rigs. Summer is the busiest window. July and August bring warm days, occasional thunderstorms, and full weekends at lakefront sites, so reservations for holiday weekends often need to be locked in months ahead. June and early September tend to be the sweet spot for milder temperatures and lighter crowds. Winter camping is limited. Most private campgrounds close by late October, water systems are shut down against hard freezes, and Wisconsin state parks that stay open in winter shift to a small number of electric sites without running water. Spring visits can be muddy, with river-adjacent sites sometimes affected by high water through May.

Roads around Benton are two-lane county highways with rolling grades and some tight turns through the Driftless ridges. Larger Class A rigs and long fifth-wheels can navigate the main routes, but shorter travel trailers and Class C motorhomes are a better fit for the tighter campground access roads at Palace Camp Ground and Lake Joy Campground. Most private parks in the area offer 30-amp service, with 50-amp available at newer sites, and a mix of full-hookup and water-electric sites is typical. Verizon and AT&T coverage is generally usable, though signal drops in the deeper valleys. Expect quiet nights, dark skies, and cool evenings even in midsummer. Firewood is usually sold on-site, and Wisconsin rules restrict bringing outside firewood to help slow the spread of invasive pests such as emerald ash borer.
