Water recreation centers on Yellowstone Lake, a roughly 455-acre reservoir with a swimming beach, boat launch, and fishing. The neighboring Yellowstone Wildlife Area also offers additional recreational activities, including horse trails and a shooting range. Hikers and cyclists can head to Governor Dodge State Park, which covers roughly 5,000 acres of the Driftless Area with rugged outcroppings, wildflower prairies, two lakes with beaches and picnic areas, and miles of hiking, biking and equestrian trails, including a route to Stephens' Falls. Blue Mound State Park features the highest point in southern Wisconsin along with observation towers and a seasonal swimming pool. Nearby New Glarus offers a Swiss-themed downtown and the Sugar River State Trail, a rail-trail popular with families riding bikes from camp.

The Wisconsin state park camping season generally runs from spring through late fall, with peak demand from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Summer weekends fill quickly at Yellowstone Lake and Twin Valley, and reservations for holiday weekends are typically booked months in advance. Weekday arrivals see far more availability, and shoulder-season trips in May, September, and early October offer cooler weather with fewer bugs. Spring brings wildflowers, migrating birds, and green ridges, though April can still deliver overnight frosts and muddy trails. Autumn is a prime window for the Driftless region as the hardwood ridges turn color, usually peaking in early to mid-October. Winter access is limited but not absent. Governor Dodge has 269 campsites in Twin Valley and Cox Hollow campgrounds, and more than 30 campsites in the Twin Valley campground are available for winter campers, with a few of those sites plowed. Yellowstone Lake stays open for ice fishing, snowmobiling, and cross-country skiing, though vault toilets and drinking water are available year-round while a dumping station, flush toilets and showers are available seasonally.

Campgrounds in this part of Wisconsin lean rustic. Yellowstone Lake State Park offers 128 individual campsites; 38 sites have electrical hookups, with a single shower building serving the campground and a seasonal dump station. Governor Dodge has 269 standard campsites in Twin Valley and Cox Hollow campgrounds, with electrical hookups available at 80 sites, showers in the Twin Valley and Cox Hollow restroom buildings, and trailer dumping stations at both campgrounds. Sites are generally wooded and moderately spaced. Full hookups are rare in the state park system, and most RV campers should plan on electric-only sites and use of a central dump station. Expect gravel or paved pads, fire rings, picnic tables, and pit or vault toilets in many loops. Cell service can be inconsistent in the Driftless hills.
