Campgrounds and RV parks near Boscobel, WI

Paddling defines the area. The Lower Wisconsin River is wide and shallow with abundant sandbars, and outfitters in and around Boscobel rent canoes and kayaks and run shuttles for day trips or multi-day sandbar camping runs. Muscoda to Boscobel is a common day route. Wildlife along the corridor includes bald eagles, herons, cranes, turtles, and river otters. On land, Eagle Cave Resort offers guided cave tours, mini golf, hiking trails, volleyball and basketball courts, and a seasonal swimming pool. Governor Dodge State Park, Wildcat Mountain State Park, and Wyalusing State Park are all within roughly an hour and add swimming, longer hiking, and bluff-top overlooks. Visitors in May can also catch the Muscoda Morel Festival.

Most private campgrounds in the area run a seasonal calendar tied roughly to Memorial Day through Labor Day, with shoulder weeks in May and September. Eagle Cave Resort runs guided cave tours from Memorial Day to Labor Day, Thursday through Sunday, and its in-cave exploratory program runs from mid-September to mid-May by reservation only, aimed primarily at scout and youth groups. Summer is peak season. July and August bring warm days, thunderstorms, and full sandbars on the river, and popular sites at nearby state parks fill months in advance. Late spring and early fall are quieter, with mild temperatures, active bird migration, and fewer bugs. Fall color along the river bluffs typically peaks in mid-October. Winter camping options are limited. Not all Wisconsin state park properties offer camping during non-summer months, and camping seasons vary by property. Most private RV parks close by late October and reopen in spring. Snow, ice, and unplowed park roads should be expected from December through February.

Private campgrounds in the area range from full-hookup RV sites to primitive tent spots and cabins. Eagle Cave Resort provides a dump station, showers and flush toilets, a swimming pool, trails, and cabin, group, RV, and tent sites with electric hookups. State park campgrounds in the region tend to be non-electric or partially electric, with shared showers and a central dump station. Cell service can be spotty in the Driftless valleys, so download maps in advance. Bring leveling blocks, since many sites in the area sit on gravel or grass and are not perfectly flat. Nighttime temperatures can drop sharply from daytime highs even in summer, so pack layers. Firewood should be bought locally, since Wisconsin restricts moving firewood to limit tree pests.
