Camping near Bruce, Wisconsin
Bruce is a small village in Rusk County in northwestern Wisconsin, set along the Chippewa River in a landscape of forest, lakes, and river frontage. The village sits on U.S. Highway 8 and Wisconsin Highway 40, giving RV travelers a practical base for reaching the Blue Hills, the Chippewa and Flambeau river corridors, and the surrounding county and state forest lands.
Campgrounds in the immediate area are mostly small, family-run resorts on lakes or rivers rather than large destination parks. Options close to town include East River Run Escape, Roses Bay Resort Campground, Green Acres Family Campground, Lured Inn Bar Grill RV Park, and TJs Timberline Resort Campground. Most offer a mix of RV sites with water and electric hookups, tent sites, and cabins, and many double as fishing resorts with boat access to nearby lakes and river frontage.
For a more rustic option, the Flambeau River State Forest lies a short drive to the northeast and operates two family campgrounds on Lake of the Pines and Connors Lake, with reservable sites through the Wisconsin DNR system.
Things to do around Bruce
Water recreation drives most trips here. The Village of Bruce sits adjacent to the Chippewa River and serves as a gateway to the Blue Hills, with easy access to hunting, fishing, skiing, biking, and hiking. Area lakes and rivers support fishing for walleye, musky, bass, panfish, and northern pike, and musky, sturgeon, trout, walleye, bass, and panfish can be caught from the Flambeau River and its lakes. Paddling, tubing, and pontoon days are common summer activities, and several resorts rent canoes and kayaks or run river shuttles.
On land, the Blue Hills west of Bruce offer hiking, mountain biking, and cross-country ski trails, and Christie Mountain provides downhill skiing, snowboarding, and tubing in winter. The region is also laced with ATV and snowmobile trails, and the Flambeau River State Forest lies a short drive northeast for day trips into deeper north-woods country.

The core RV season runs roughly from May through October. Late spring brings green-up, high water for paddling, and active walleye fishing, but nights stay cold into May and biting insects peak in late May and June. Summer is the busiest stretch, with warm days, reliable swimming, and full campground services; weekends fill quickly at waterfront sites, so reserve early.
Early fall is often the best window for RV travel. Days stay comfortable, mosquito pressure drops, and hardwood color usually peaks from late September into mid-October. Muskie fishing is strong, and many resorts stay open through the color season.
Winter closes most private campgrounds and shifts activity to snowmobiling, ice fishing, and skiing at Christie Mountain and in the Blue Hills. State forest campgrounds have varied seasons: Lake of the Pines is open from April 15 to December 15, while Connors Lake operates from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend. Confirm dates with each campground before booking a shoulder-season trip.
How to book a site
Private campgrounds around Bruce, including the small resorts on area lakes and along the Chippewa and Flambeau rivers, book directly by phone or through their own websites. Call ahead in spring for summer weekends and holiday periods, since these are small properties with limited waterfront sites and many seasonal renters.
For state forest campgrounds in the region, reservations go through the Wisconsin DNR's Going to Camp system. Reservations are available within an 11-month window, meaning you cannot reserve a site for a date more than 11 months away from today's date. Reserve a campsite online or by calling 1-888-947-2757. At the Flambeau River State Forest, all campsites at both Lake of the Pines and Conners Lake campgrounds are available for reservations, and a state park vehicle admission sticker is required for entry.
What to expect on the ground
Expect small, wooded, water-oriented campgrounds rather than large resort complexes. Many sites are set among mature pine and hardwoods, with gravel or grass pads. Hookups vary: some private resorts offer full 50/30/20-amp service and water, while state forest campgrounds nearby are more rustic, with vault toilet buildings, a hand pump for water, and a garbage and recycling station rather than full shower houses.
Cell coverage is uneven. Signal is usable in Bruce and Ladysmith but weakens on back roads and along the rivers, and cell phone service can be poor or nonexistent in many locations of the forest.
Come prepared for mosquitoes and blackflies in early summer, bring bug spray and a screen room, buy firewood locally to comply with invasive-species rules, and expect quiet, low-traffic roads once off US 8.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Bruce, WI
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Bruce, WI?
RV rental in Bruce, WI is surprisingly affordable compared to bigger Wisconsin tourist hubs. Travel trailers typically run $90 to $160 per night, Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $275 per night, and luxury Class A rigs sit higher. Because Bruce is a small Rusk County village rather than a major metro, you'll often find better nightly rates than near Madison or Milwaukee. To save more, book midweek, travel in May or September shoulder season, and look for hosts offering weekly discounts. Pro tip: filter by Instant Book to lock in a cheap RV rental Bruce travelers love before Blue Hills Festival weekend in July, when demand spikes.
travelwisconsin.com/northwest/rusk-county/bruceWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Bruce, Wisconsin?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Bruce, Wisconsin. Wisconsin does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special RV endorsement for motorhomes or travel trailers used recreationally, regardless of size. To book on RVezy you need to be at least 25 years old and meet the approved driver requirements, and your identity is verified directly through the platform during checkout. Visiting from another country? Bring your home license plus an International Driving Permit and you're set. Most first-time renters are surprised how quick the process is, leaving more time to plan your Blue Hills adventure.

help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Bruce RV rental?
Booking is low-risk because RVezy sets the cancellation policy across the platform, not individual hosts, so the rules are consistent on every listing. There is a money-back grace period right after booking and additional flexibility built in depending on how far in advance you cancel. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or provides travel credits so your trip plans stay protected. Pro tip: book early to lock in your dates for the Blue Hills Festival or fall color season, knowing you have a clear grace window to adjust plans if life changes.

Absolutely, a pet-friendly RV rental in Bruce is just a filter click away on RVezy. Use the Pet-Friendly filter to see only hosts who welcome four-legged co-pilots, then message them directly to share your pup's size and breed. Rusk County is genuinely dog-friendly: the Blue Hills Trail system, Tuscobia State Trail, and Flambeau River State Forest all allow leashed dogs, and most local campgrounds welcome pets too. Pro tip: pack a long tie-out, a collapsible water bowl, and tick prevention since northern Wisconsin's woods are tick country in summer.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/petsinparksCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near Bruce?
Yes, many hosts near Bruce offer RV delivery, which is a game changer if it's your first time renting an RV. Your host can drive the motorhome or travel trailer straight to your campsite at Lake Holcombe, Flambeau River State Forest, or a private property in the Blue Hills, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system. You skip the stress of towing or maneuvering a large rig on County Highway 40. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to find listings that offer this, and message the host with your exact campground address for a quick quote.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/flambeauriverHow far can I drive from Bruce on my RV trip?
You can roam wide on a Bruce RV trip since hosts set their own mileage policies, and many offer generous daily allowances or even RV rental with unlimited mileage. From Bruce you're roughly 40 miles to Hayward and the Chequamegon National Forest, 60 miles to Eau Claire, 90 miles to Bayfield and the Apostle Islands gateway, 150 miles to Duluth, Minnesota, and about 240 miles to the Twin Cities. Check each listing's mileage details before booking, and if you're planning a longer loop, simply message the host to ask about add-on mileage packages. Pro tip: a 100-mile daily allowance is plenty for exploring Rusk County's lakes and trails without overage worries.
fs.usda.gov/cnnfWhere are the best campgrounds near Bruce, WI?
You have great choices for RV camping near Bruce. Top picks include Lake Holcombe Resort and Campground about 20 miles south on the Holcombe Flowage with full hookups and a sandy swim beach, Flambeau River State Forest's Connors Lake and Lake of the Pines campgrounds roughly 30 miles east for pine-shaded sites, and Audie Lake County Park about 25 miles south for quiet, affordable nights. Pro tip: Wisconsin State Forest sites open for reservations 11 months in advance through the Wisconsin DNR reservation system, so book summer weekends as early as possible.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/flambeauriver/campingWhen is the best time of year to rent an RV in Bruce, Wisconsin?
Late May through early October is the sweet spot for a Bruce RV trip, with June, July, and August being peak season. Summer highs in Rusk County average 75 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit with cool nights in the 50s, ideal for campfires. September brings stunning fall color across the Blue Hills and far fewer mosquitoes. Winter is genuinely magical here too: Bruce sits at the edge of world-class snowmobile and cross-country ski country, including trails connecting to the American Birkebeiner course near Hayward. If you want a quieter, cheaper trip, target the first two weeks of June or mid-September. Pro tip: book around the Blue Hills Festival in July for a true small-town Wisconsin experience.
weather.gov/dlh/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving in rural Wisconsin?
You've got this, and first time renting an RV in Bruce is actually one of the easier places to start. Your host gives a full walk-through at pickup, covering everything from the propane and water systems to backing up and dumping tanks. Roads around Bruce, including US Highway 8 and County Highways are wide, lightly trafficked, and mostly flat to gently rolling, very different from city driving. If you're nervous, choose a smaller Class C motorhome or travel trailer, or book a host who offers delivery so you skip the drive entirely. Pro tip: practice a few low-speed turns in a quiet lot like the Bruce Park area before heading to your campsite.
wisconsindot.gov/Pages/safety/safety-eng/sharing-road/default.aspxWhat if I have a breakdown or issue on the road near Bruce?
You are never alone out there. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance with the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on Highway 40 or a dead battery at Lake Holcombe is one phone call away from help. You also have your host as a direct text or call resource for questions about quirks specific to their RV, plus RVezy's customer support team before, during, and after your trip. Cell coverage in Rusk County is generally solid along major highways but can dip in the deeper Blue Hills, so download offline maps before you head out. Pro tip: snap a photo of your RV's VIN and license plate at pickup so you can share details fast if you ever need service.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trip routes from Bruce, WI?
A RV road trip from Bruce opens up some of the Midwest's most scenic country. Popular routes include heading north 90 miles to Bayfield and the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore for sea caves and Lake Superior sunsets; west 150 miles to Duluth and Minnesota's North Shore; east 75 miles to the Northwoods around Minocqua and the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest; or south 90 miles down to the Mississippi River bluffs near La Crosse. Cross-border into Minnesota is fully allowed; travel into Canada may be possible with host approval and proper documentation, but trips to Mexico are not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: drive Wisconsin Rustic Road 114 just west of Bruce for an unforgettable slow-roll through the Blue Hills.
nps.gov/apis/index.htmWhat kind of fuel mileage should I budget for my Bruce RV rental?
Plan smart and fuel won't bust your budget. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 miles per gallon, Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 mpg, and Class A motorhomes typically run 6 to 10 mpg. Truck-and-trailer combos depend on your tow vehicle but usually land around 10 to 14 mpg. Wisconsin gas prices in the Bruce area generally track close to the state average, often a bit cheaper than Twin Cities prices, with stations along US Highway 8 in Ladysmith being convenient fill-ups. Pro tip: fuel up before leaving Ladysmith heading into the Blue Hills, since gas stations get sparse on backroads, and you'll roll into your campsite with a full tank for the morning.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Bruce?
For peace of mind, book Wisconsin State Park and State Forest campsites as soon as the 11-month rolling reservation window opens through the Wisconsin DNR reservation system, especially for July and August weekends at Flambeau River State Forest. County parks like Audie Lake and private campgrounds around Lake Holcombe usually open up 3 to 6 months ahead. For shoulder season trips in late May or September, you can often snag sites just a few weeks out. Pro tip: if everything looks booked, ask your RVezy host about RV delivery to a private property or a smaller township park, since hosts often know hidden spots locals use.
wisconsinstateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are driving conditions like around Bruce, Wisconsin?
Driving around Bruce is refreshingly low-stress. Roads are paved, well-maintained, and lightly trafficked, with US Highway 8 being the main east-west corridor and State Highway 40 the north-south route. Watch for white-tailed deer at dawn and dusk, especially in fall during the rut, and stay alert for logging trucks on backroads. Winter brings real snow and ice from December through March, so if you're booking a winter RV trip make sure your host's rig has winter tires and heated tanks. Summer is straightforward driving with occasional thunderstorms. Pro tip: avoid the narrow forest roads off Rustic Road 114 in a Class A rig and stick to main routes for the smoothest ride.
511wi.gov/What amenities should I expect at campgrounds near Bruce?
You'll find a great mix of options for RV camping Bruce style. Full-hookup campgrounds like Lake Holcombe Resort offer water, 30/50 amp electric, and sewer at each site, while Wisconsin State Forest sites at Flambeau River are typically electric-only or rustic with shared water spigots and vault toilets. Most campgrounds have dump stations onsite, and you can also dump at the Ladysmith city dump station about 12 miles away. Drinking water fill-up is available at most campground hosts and the Bruce community park. Pro tip: bring a 25-foot drinking-water hose and a basic surge protector since older rural electrical pedestals can have voltage swings, an easy precaution that protects your RV's appliances.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/campingWhat's included inside a typical RV rental in Bruce?
Expect a comfortable home on wheels. Most Bruce-area motorhome rentals come fully equipped with a queen or king bed, dinette and sofa that convert to extra sleeping space, a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and onboard generator for off-grid power, and a growing number of hosts offer mobile Wi-Fi hotspots. Listings detail exactly what's included, so you can match an RV to your needs whether that's a campervan rental Bruce solo travelers want or a roomy Class C for a family RV trip Bruce parents are planning. Pro tip: confirm bedding and kitchen kits are included, since some hosts offer them as free add-ons.
travelwisconsin.com/northwest/rusk-county/bruceWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
You can customize your rental to fit the trip. Popular add-ons from Bruce-area hosts include bedding and towel packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits with pots, dishes, and utensils ($25 to $50), portable propane fire pits (handy when DNR campfire bans are in effect), bike racks, generators, and extra mileage packages. Pickup is usually at the host's home in or near Bruce, with delivery available to nearby campgrounds and private properties for a per-mile fee. Each listing spells out mileage allowance per night and any overage rate. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and pickup with a generator add-on for a true plug-and-play first time RV experience that lets you focus on the Chippewa River instead of logistics.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/forestfire/restrictionsHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy at booking with a credit or debit card, and the rental total plus any add-ons is processed by the platform rather than the individual host. A separate refundable security deposit is collected before your trip start date and held during your rental. As long as you return the RV in the agreed condition with the same fuel level and clean inside, the deposit is released back to you after the trip. Pro tip: do a thorough photo walk-around at pickup and dropoff with your host and save the photos, so your motorhome rental in Bruce ends as smoothly as it started.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I take an RV rental from Bruce on a winter trip?
Yes, and winter in the Northwoods is a hidden gem. Some Bruce-area hosts list four-season RVs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and reliable propane furnaces, perfect for ice fishing on Lake Holcombe, snowmobiling the Tuscobia State Trail, or cross-country skiing the famous Blue Hills Trail. Daytime January highs average around 22 degrees Fahrenheit and nights can dip below zero, so you'll want shore power at a winter-open campground or a private hookup. Message hosts directly to confirm winter readiness and ask about RV delivery to a plowed site. Pro tip: book a rig with a generator or full hookups so the furnace runs all night and you wake up toasty, ready for fresh powder on the trails.
