Campgrounds near Highland, Wisconsin
Highland sits in the Driftless Area of southwestern Wisconsin, a region of unglaciated ridges, sandstone bluffs, and river valleys. RV renters use the village as a base for state parks along the Lower Wisconsin River and for family resorts within a 30 to 45 minute drive. Governor Dodge State Park is the anchor public land nearby, with Twin Valley - Governor Dodge State Park offering a full-service campground about 15 miles east near Dodgeville.
Private options add variety. Fireside Campground near Lone Rock caters to big rigs with 20/30/50 amp water and electric service and full hook-up sites. Eagle Cave Resort LLC in Blue River pairs wooded campsites with Wisconsin's largest onyx cave. Wisconsin Riverside Resort, Inc. in Spring Green sits along the Lower Wisconsin River with a pool, restaurant, and tube rentals. Lake Joy Campground near Belmont surrounds a 60-acre private, spring-fed lake with a swimming beach and RV hookups.
Most campgrounds in the area serve families and offer level sites with easy access from state highways.
Things to do near Highland
Governor Dodge State Park is the region's main outdoor draw, with two lakes (Cox Hollow and Twin Valley), Stephens' Falls, and miles of hiking, mountain biking, and equestrian trails through sandstone bluff country. Boating on the park's lakes is restricted to electric motors, and both lakes have swimming beaches and boat launches.
The Lower Wisconsin State Riverway is popular for canoeing, kayaking, and tubing, with shuttle-based trips out of Spring Green. Eagle Cave Resort runs guided cave tours on summer weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day, and an in-cave exploratory program from mid-September to mid-May.
Off-property day trips include House on the Rock, Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin, Mineral Point's historic district, and the Pine River Bike Path across from Fireside Campground.

Summer is warm and humid, with June among the wettest months of the year and afternoon thunderstorms common.
Spring and fall offer cooler temperatures, thinner crowds, and strong scenery, particularly for fall color from late September through October. Most private campgrounds in the area operate seasonally: Fireside Campground runs roughly April into November, and Wisconsin Riverside Resort opens in spring and closes in mid-fall. Eagle Cave Resort keeps seasonal campsites and hosts its cave exploratory program from mid-September through mid-May.
Winter camping is limited but possible. More than 30 sites at Twin Valley - Governor Dodge State Park remain open for winter campers, with a few plowed sites, electricity, pit toilets, and water available at the park office.
How to book campsites near Highland
Wisconsin State Parks including Governor Dodge use a single reservation system. Sites at Twin Valley - Governor Dodge State Park can be reserved online or by phone for the same day of arrival and up to 11 months in advance. A vehicle admission sticker is required, and all campers must register at the park office before occupying a site.
Private campgrounds handle their own reservations. Fireside Campground, Eagle Cave Resort LLC, Lake Joy Campground, and Wisconsin Riverside Resort, Inc. all take direct bookings by phone or through their websites. Booking early is recommended for holiday weekends and popular summer events, when seasonal sites take up much of the inventory at the private parks.
What to expect on the ground
State park sites at Governor Dodge are wooded and spacious, with a mix of electric and non-electric sites across the Twin Valley and Cox Hollow campgrounds. Both campgrounds have shower buildings and trailer dump stations, and the state reservation system offers photo previews of individual sites.
Private resorts lean toward family amenities. Eagle Cave Resort offers water and electric sites, primitive sites, cabins, a seasonal pool, mini-golf, and an on-site restaurant. Lake Joy Campground provides tent sites, RV sites with water and 20/30/50 amp electric hook-ups, a dump station, a swim beach, boat rentals, and access to about 140 miles of ATV and UTV trails from camp.
Cell service can be spotty in the deeper valleys, and Wi-Fi at private parks is generally geared to basic browsing rather than streaming.

travelwisconsin.com/article/road-trips/rv-camping-wisconsinWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Highland, Wisconsin?
Great news: your everyday driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Highland, Wisconsin. Wisconsin does not require a commercial driver's license or special RV endorsement for personal motorhomes or travel trailers under typical recreational weights, so Class B campervans, Class C motorhomes, and travel trailers on RVezy are all fair game. You'll need to be 25 or older, and we'll verify your ID securely through the platform during booking. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Pair your home license with an International Driving Permit from your local auto club before you arrive. Then it's just a quick host walkthrough and you're rolling toward the Wisconsin River.

help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my Highland RV trip plans change?
Plans shift, and RVezy is built to flex with you. Every booking is backed by the standard RVezy cancellation policy, which includes a full money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in that Driftless Area weekend without overthinking it. After the grace window, refund amounts depend on how close you are to your trip start date, and special situations are reviewed by the RVezy support team. The cancellation policy is set by RVezy rather than individual hosts, which keeps things simple and consistent across every rental. Book early for peak July weekends and relax knowing flexibility is baked in.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Highland?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental Highland options are easy to find on RVezy. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter and you'll see hosts who welcome dogs (and sometimes cats) in their rigs, often with a small cleaning fee disclosed up front. Once you arrive, dogs are welcome on leash at Governor Dodge State Park, Blackhawk Lake Recreation Area, and Yellowstone Lake State Park, all within about 30 minutes of Highland. Pack a tie-out, a collapsible water bowl, and a towel for muddy paws after Wisconsin River sandbar swims. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm breed or size details so check-in is smooth.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/rulesCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near Highland?
Yes, RV delivery is one of the most popular options for an RV rental in Highland, especially for first-time renters. Many local hosts will tow or drive the rig directly to your campsite at Governor Dodge State Park, Blackhawk Lake Recreation Area, or Tower Hill State Park, level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before they leave. That means zero towing stress for you and a fully set-up basecamp when you arrive. Delivery fees are typically based on mileage from the host's location and are shown transparently before you book. Use the Delivery filter on the search page to see which hosts offer it for your dates.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/campingHow many miles can I drive on my Highland RV rental?
Plenty, and many hosts in Highland offer generous mileage packages or even RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer road trips. Each listing shows the included daily miles plus the per-mile rate beyond that, so there are no surprises. For a typical Driftless Area loop (Highland to Wisconsin Dells is about 55 miles, to Madison roughly 60 miles, and to the Mississippi River at Prairie du Chien about 45 miles), 100 included miles per day usually covers it with room to spare. Planning a bigger Wisconsin RV trip up to Door County (around 230 miles)? Message the host for a custom mileage bundle. Pro tip: map your route before booking and ask for unlimited if it pencils out.
wisconsindot.gov/Pages/travel/road/default.aspxWhere are the best campgrounds near Highland, WI?
You're in one of Wisconsin's prettiest camping corridors. The best campgrounds near Highland include Governor Dodge State Park (about 10 miles south, 269 sites with electric hookups, swim beaches, and miles of trails), Blackhawk Lake Recreation Area (a 150-site Iowa County park about 8 miles west with electric sites and a quiet lake), Tower Hill State Park (about 18 miles east along the Wisconsin River), Wyalusing State Park (about an hour west on the Mississippi bluffs), and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Camp Resort in Warrens for families. Most of these accept RVs up to 35 feet comfortably. Pro tip: reserve Governor Dodge sites the moment your dates open, summer weekends fill within hours.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/govdodgeWhen is the best time of year for RV camping in Highland?
Late May through early October is the sweet spot for RV camping Highland, with the absolute peak in June, July, and August when daytime highs run 78 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit and the Wisconsin River is warm enough for tubing. September is a local favorite: highs in the low 70s, fewer bugs, and the Driftless Area hills start lighting up gold and red by late month. Winters here drop into the teens with regular snow, so most private campgrounds close from November through April. Pro tip: book the last weekend of September for fall colors at Governor Dodge, it's quietly the most beautiful weekend of the year and still warm enough for s'mores.
weather.gov/mkx/I have never driven an RV before. Will I be okay in rural Wisconsin?
You've got this, and Highland is actually an ideal spot for your first time renting an RV. The county roads around Iowa County are wide, lightly trafficked, and mostly flat to gently rolling, which is much friendlier than mountain or interstate driving. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, propane, water, and the dump tank, and you can message them anytime during your trip with questions. Class B campervans and small Class C motorhomes are the easiest starter rigs, both park in standard spots. Pro tip: do a practice loop through Highland before heading to camp, you'll feel like a pro within 20 minutes.
wisconsindot.gov/Pages/safety/safety-eng/rv-safety.aspxWhat happens if my RV breaks down during my trip near Highland?
You are covered, day or night. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a flat tire on Highway 80, a dead battery at Blackhawk Lake, or a propane hiccup at Governor Dodge is just one phone call away from help. You will also have your host's direct contact, and many Highland hosts live within 30 minutes and can come out personally for quick fixes. For anything bigger, RVezy support coordinates a tow or mobile mechanic. Save the roadside number in your phone before you leave the driveway and you will never feel stranded on your Highland RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat are the best RV road trip routes from Highland, WI?
Highland is an incredible launchpad for an RV road trip from Highland into the heart of the Midwest. Top routes include the Great River Road south along the Mississippi to Prairie du Chien and Wyalusing State Park (about 45 miles, 1 hour), Wisconsin Dells for family waterparks (55 miles, just over an hour), Madison and the Capitol farmers market (60 miles, 75 minutes), Door County's cherry orchards and lighthouses (about 230 miles, 4.5 hours), and the Apostle Islands on Lake Superior (about 320 miles, 5.5 hours). Cross-border travel into the U.S. is no issue, but Mexico trips are not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: loop the Great River Road one way and the Driftless backroads home.
wisconsindot.gov/Pages/travel/road/scenic-byways/default.aspxWhat kind of fuel economy and gas budget should I plan for?
Budgeting is easier than you think. Class B campervans around Highland average 18 to 22 miles per gallon, Class C motorhomes run 10 to 14 MPG, and larger Class A rigs land near 8 to 10 MPG. Wisconsin gas prices typically hover near the national average, and there are convenient stations in Dodgeville, Spring Green, and Mineral Point all within 20 minutes of Highland. For a 3-night loop covering 200 miles in a Class C, plan roughly $80 to $110 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Dodgeville before heading to Governor Dodge State Park, in-park and rural pumps run 20 to 40 cents higher per gallon.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Highland?
For summer weekends, sooner is better. Wisconsin State Park campsites at Governor Dodge, Tower Hill, and Wyalusing open for reservation 11 months in advance through the Wisconsin DNR reservation system, and prime July and August weekends often book up within the first few days. For shoulder-season trips in May, September, or October, two to four weeks ahead is usually plenty. Iowa County's Blackhawk Lake Recreation Area takes reservations directly through the county. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for exactly 11 months before your target date and book at 7 a.m. Central, that's when the best Wisconsin River bluff sites at Wyalusing get snapped up.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/reservationsWhat are the local driving conditions like around Highland?
Driving around Highland is genuinely pleasant. The Driftless Area was never flattened by glaciers, so expect gently winding two-lane roads through rolling farmland and limestone bluffs rather than steep mountain passes. Highway 80, Highway 18, and County Road I are the main routes and all handle RVs up to 35 feet easily. Watch for Amish horse-and-buggy traffic on rural roads, deer at dawn and dusk (especially in fall), and the occasional gravel shoulder. Winter brings snow and ice from late November through March, which is why most rentals are seasonal. Pro tip: slow down on the curvy stretch of Highway 23 between Spring Green and Dodgeville, the views are worth it.
511wi.gov/What hookups and dump stations can I expect at Highland campgrounds?
Most Highland-area campgrounds are well equipped for RVs. Governor Dodge State Park offers 50-amp and 30-amp electric sites, potable water fill stations, and a dump station near the park entrance. Blackhawk Lake Recreation Area has electric sites plus a dump and fresh water fill, and Tower Hill State Park provides basic electric and a shared water spigot. Wisconsin State Parks generally do not offer sewer hookups at individual sites, so you'll use the dump station on your way out. Cell signal can be spotty in valleys, so download maps offline. Pro tip: top off your fresh tank before leaving Dodgeville, in-park spigots can have a line on Friday afternoons.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/camping/electricWhat amenities come standard in a Highland RV rental?
You'll be surprised how loaded these rigs are. A typical campervan rental Highland or motorhome on RVezy comes with a real bed (often a queen), a kitchen with fridge, stove, sink, and basic cookware, a bathroom with toilet and shower in Class B, C, and larger units, climate control, and seatbelted seating for travel. Most listings include a microwave, propane for cooking and heat, and a house battery for off-grid power. Many hosts also throw in linens, towels, a coffee maker, outdoor chairs, and a portable Bluetooth speaker. Wi-Fi hotspots and rooftop solar are common add-ons. Check the listing's amenities grid to see exactly what's included before you book.
rvia.org/rv-typesWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about for a Highland RV rental?
Highland hosts make customization easy. Popular add-ons include camping chairs and tables, bike or kayak racks, propane fire pits (great for state parks during dry spells when ground fires are restricted), generators, Wi-Fi hotspots, linen and kitchen packages, and pet cleaning fees. Pickup is usually at the host's home in or near Highland, with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough covering driving, hookups, and dumping. Drop-off mirrors the same process, and most hosts ask that you return the RV with a full fuel tank and empty waste tanks, or pay a small dump fee. Mileage allowances are listed clearly on every listing. Bundling delivery plus setup is a smart move if it is your first trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360002180014-For-rentersHow does payment and the security deposit work on an RV rental in Highland?
Payment is handled entirely through RVezy, with no cash and no awkward driveway transactions. You pay securely on the platform with a credit or debit card at booking, and your host receives funds after your trip starts. A refundable security deposit is held on your card before pickup, typically a few hundred to a few thousand dollars depending on the rig, and released after the host confirms the RV came back in good shape, usually within a few days of drop-off. To avoid any issues, do a quick walkaround video with the host at pickup and again at return. Keep tanks empty, fuel full, and the interior swept and you should get the full deposit back.
