Campgrounds near Hillsboro, Wisconsin
Hillsboro sits in the Driftless Area of west-central Wisconsin, an unglaciated region of ridges, coulees, and spring-fed trout streams. The town serves as a practical base for RV travelers exploring the Kickapoo River valley, the Elroy-Sparta State Trail corridor, and the sandstone bluffs to the north near Camp Douglas.
Campground options in the area range from full-service private resorts to rustic state park sites. Chapparal Campground And Resort and Alana Springs Lodge and Campground offer amenity-heavy stays close to town, while Tunnel Trail Campground places riders directly on a rail-trail between Kendall and Wilton. Public land camping is available at Wildcat Mountain State Park, including the Horse Camp for equestrian rigs, and at Mill Bluff State Park north of Hillsboro near Camp Douglas.
Most sites in this region are wooded and rolling rather than flat prairie, so RV renters should confirm site length and levelness when booking. Cell coverage is spotty in the coulees, and grocery resupply is easiest in Hillsboro, Elroy, or Tomah.
Things to do near Hillsboro
The Elroy-Sparta State Trail is the anchor activity for many visitors. The 32-mile crushed-limestone path follows a former Chicago and Northwestern rail bed and passes through three historic tunnels, two roughly a quarter-mile long and one about three-quarters of a mile. Bikers walk their bikes through the tunnels and should carry flashlights and jackets, since the interiors stay cool and damp even in summer. Tunnel Trail Campground sits directly on the route.
Wildcat Mountain State Park offers hiking, a Kickapoo River overlook, canoe access, and roughly 15 miles of horse trails. Mill Bluff State Park protects Ice Age sandstone bluffs and includes a small spring-fed swimming pond with a sand beach. Nearby villages such as Ontario rent canoes and kayaks for float trips on the Kickapoo.

Peak RV season runs from late May through mid-October. Tunnel Trail Campground is open May through mid-October, and the Elroy-Sparta tunnels are closed from November 1 to April 30 each year to protect hibernating northern long-eared bats. Mill Bluff State Park's campground operates from May through September only. Wildcat Mountain's family and cart-in loops stay open year-round, but the equestrian Horse Camp operates from May 1 to November 14.
Summer brings warm days, humid nights, and the region's wettest months, with thunderstorms common from June through August. Fall delivers cooler air and strong hardwood color through late September and October, and reservation pressure eases after Labor Day.
Winter shifts the area toward cross-country skiing and snowshoeing at Wildcat Mountain, which grooms several miles of ski trails. Most private campgrounds and the state park horse camp are closed during the cold months.
How to book a campsite
Wisconsin State Park sites, including those at Wildcat Mountain State Park and Mill Bluff State Park, are reserved through the state's online system at wisconsin.goingtocamp.com. Reservations open up to 11 months in advance, and popular summer weekends fill quickly, so booking early is recommended. A Wisconsin State Park vehicle admission pass is required in addition to the camping fee.
Private campgrounds handle their own bookings. Tunnel Trail Campground takes reservations by phone or through its website. Chapparal Campground And Resort and Alana Springs Lodge and Campground book directly with the property. Holiday weekends around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day typically sell out weeks in advance across all options.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain in the Driftless is hilly. Sites are often terraced or sloped, and some state park loops have limited or no electrical hookups. Wildcat Mountain's family campground has flush toilets, showers, and a dump station, while Mill Bluff offers six electric sites among its 21 total, with vault toilets and hand-pump drinking water. Private resorts near Hillsboro generally provide fuller hookups, pools, and camp stores.
Mosquitoes and ticks are active from late spring through early fall, so repellent and long pants are useful on wooded trails. Poison ivy grows throughout the region. Cell service is limited in the river valleys and inside state parks, so downloading maps before arrival is wise.
Raccoons are persistent, so food should be stored inside the RV overnight. Wisconsin State Park rules cap pet leash length at eight feet.

Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Hillsboro and drive anywhere in Wisconsin. The state does not require a Commercial Driver's License for typical recreational vehicles, and virtually every RV on RVezy falls within standard license limits. To be an approved driver on RVezy, you'll generally need to be at least 25 years old with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your identification during the booking process, so there's nothing extra to print or bring. Booking your Hillsboro RV adventure is lower risk because RVezy, not the host, defines the cancellation policy. You'll see the specific terms during checkout, and the RVezy support team is available before, during, and after every trip if your plans shift. Pro tip: lock in your dates early for peak fall color weekends in October, when Vernon County RV inventory disappears fast.

Pro tip: bring a long tie-out for your campsite, plenty of fresh water, and a towel for muddy paws after splashing in the Kickapoo River. Your dog will sleep well after a day in this terrain.

Use the Delivery filter when searching, and message the host to confirm distance and any fees. Pro tip: delivery is a game-changer if you're flying into La Crosse Regional Airport about 70 miles west and renting a small car to meet your RV at the campsite.

Kickapoo Valley Reserve in La Farge offers primitive vehicle-accessible and paddle-in sites at modest nightly rates. June through August brings warm days typically in the upper 70s to low 80s Fahrenheit and pleasant nights, ideal for paddling the Kickapoo River. September and early October are arguably the best time to visit, with crisp mornings, fewer bugs, and spectacular fall color across the unglaciated bluffs. Spring (April to mid-May) is quiet and green but can be muddy. Winter is cold, with January highs commonly in the mid-20s Fahrenheit, but adventurous renters can find winterized RVs for cross-country skiing at Wildcat Mountain. Pro tip: aim for the last weekend of September or first weekend of October for peak foliage.
weather.gov/arx/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?
You'll be just fine, even if it's your first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host in Hillsboro provides a full walkthrough at pickup, showing you how to operate the slide-outs, water system, generator, propane, and dump valves, plus tips for safely driving the rolling hills of Vernon County. The roads around Hillsboro (Highway 33, Highway 82, Highway 131) are scenic two-lanes with gentle grades, great for building confidence before tackling anything bigger. You can message the host with questions anytime through the platform, and RVezy support is available 24/7. Pro tip: start with a Class C motorhome or smaller travel trailer, they drive much like a large van and are forgiving for new RVers.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if something breaks down during my trip?
You're covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so if you get a flat on Highway 33, run into engine trouble near Wildcat Mountain, or have a propane issue at your campsite, help is one phone call away. Your host is also a direct resource for quirks specific to their RV, and RVezy's support team is available before, during, and after the trip. Cell coverage is generally solid in the Hillsboro area along main roads but can be spotty in the deeper Kickapoo Valley, so pro tip: screenshot your roadside assistance number and your campsite directions before you head into the bluffs.

Popular routes include the Great River Road south along the Mississippi (La Crosse is about 70 miles, Prairie du Chien around 75 miles), Wisconsin Dells and Devil's Lake State Park (roughly 60 to 80 miles east), Madison and the state capital area (about 95 miles), and a longer haul to Door County (about 280 miles, around 5 hours). travelwisconsin.com/article/road-tripsHow much will fuel cost on my Hillsboro RV trip?
Fuel is usually the second-biggest expense after the rental itself, but it's manageable. Most Class C motorhomes around Hillsboro average 8 to 12 miles per gallon, travel trailers reduce your tow vehicle's mileage to roughly 10 to 14 MPG, and campervans (Class B) sip fuel at 16 to 20 MPG. Gas in Vernon County typically runs near or slightly below the national average, with stations in Hillsboro, Wonewoc, and La Farge along your likely route. For a 300-mile weekend trip in a Class C, budget roughly $120 to $160 in fuel at current prices. Pro tip: fill up in Hillsboro or Tomah before heading into the Kickapoo Valley, where stations are sparse and pumps close early.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I reserve a campsite near Hillsboro?
For Wisconsin State Parks like Wildcat Mountain, you can reserve a campsite up to 11 months in advance through the Wisconsin DNR reservation system, and the most popular summer weekends do book that far out. For Kickapoo Valley Reserve, reservations open through their booking portal in advance of the season. Private campgrounds like Tunnel Trail and Lost Falls usually open bookings in January for the upcoming season. Pro tip: for a Fourth of July or Labor Day trip to Wildcat Mountain, set a calendar reminder for the exact 11-month booking window, popular ridge sites can go in minutes.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/wildcat/recreation/campingWhat are driving conditions like around Hillsboro?
Driving an RV around Hillsboro is genuinely enjoyable once you know the terrain. The Driftless Region is famous for rolling hills, sharp ridges, and winding two-lane roads like Highway 33 and Highway 82, so expect modest grades and a few tight curves rather than mountain passes. Watch for Amish horse-drawn buggies on county roads (especially around La Farge and Cashton), deer at dawn and dusk, and occasional ice or fog from late fall through early spring. Summer storms can bring sudden downpours, so check the forecast each morning. Pro tip: avoid driving Highway 131 through the Kickapoo Valley in heavy rain, it's beautiful but can flood quickly when the river rises.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hillsboro%2C%20WisconsinHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Booking your Hillsboro RV is straightforward. You pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card at checkout, with the total split between the rental cost, protection plan, taxes, and any add-ons you select. To avoid any deposit issues, take time-stamped photos of the RV inside and out at pickup and dropoff, follow the host's dump and refuel instructions, and respect the mileage limit. Pro tip: message the host the morning of pickup to confirm the walkthrough time, it sets the whole trip off smoothly.

Yes, winter RV rental in Wisconsin around Hillsboro is possible and can be genuinely magical. Some RVezy hosts list four-season RVs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and dual-pane windows that can handle cold January nights. Wildcat Mountain State Park stays open year-round for cross-country skiing on its groomed trail system, and the Kickapoo Valley Reserve is stunning under snow. Plan on shore power at a winterized campground (rather than dry camping), and bring extra propane, a heated water hose, and warm sleeping bags as backup. Pro tip: filter for RVs marked as four-season or winter-ready, and message the host directly to confirm their winter prep before booking.
