Campgrounds near Necedah, Wisconsin
Necedah sits in central Wisconsin's Juneau County, surrounded by federal wildlife refuge lands, state parks, and reservoir shoreline that make it a practical base for RV trips. The village lies along Highway 21 and is less than an hour from Wisconsin Dells, Tomah, and Wisconsin Rapids, which puts family attractions within easy day-trip range.
The area's headline draw is the 44,000-acre Necedah National Wildlife Refuge, home to the world's largest population of endangered Karner blue butterflies and part of the reintroduced eastern whooping crane population. Camping is not offered inside the refuge itself, so RV travelers stay at private resorts and nearby state parks instead. Options include Summer Hideaway RV Campground Resort LLC and Buckhorn Campground Resort for longer-stay RV sites, plus Buckhorn State Park on the Castle Rock Flowage.
Further out, Mill Bluff State Park sits near Camp Douglas along I-90/94, and Roche-A-Cri State Park lies south near Friendship. Together these five properties cover the practical range of RV camping styles in the region, from resort sites to rustic state park loops.
Things to do around Necedah
Wildlife viewing anchors most itineraries. The Necedah National Wildlife Refuge visitor center has an exhibit hall, boardwalk trails over the wetlands, a two-story observation tower, and an auto tour route. The refuge hosts over 230 bird species, including red-headed woodpeckers, whooping cranes, wood ducks, and eagles, and visitors also have the chance at seeing bears, deer, porcupines, otter, turtles, and wolves.
Water recreation is the other core draw. Buckhorn State Park sits on a peninsula in the Castle Rock Flowage of the Wisconsin River and offers boating, fishing, swimming, and paddling. The marked 300-foot swim area has an all-sand bottom. Canoe rentals are available at the park office.
Hikers head to Mill Bluff for its Ice Age sandstone bluffs and the 223-step climb to the observation deck, and to Roche-A-Cri to see Native American petroglyphs and pictographs along the mound's stairway.

The camping season is tightly seasonal. State park campgrounds around Necedah run roughly from mid-to-late spring through fall. Mill Bluff State Park has a rustic, family campground with 21 campsites, and the campground is open late May through September. Roche-A-Cri State Park has a rustic family campground that operates late spring into early fall, and Buckhorn State Park reservations are available from April through November. Private resorts such as Summer Hideaway RV Campground Resort LLC and Buckhorn Campground Resort typically operate on similar warm-weather calendars.
Summer weekends are the busiest window, driven by Wisconsin Dells overflow traffic and lake recreation on Castle Rock Flowage. Expect state park sites to book out well in advance for Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day. Biting flies become problematic during mid-to-late summer evenings, and fall brings cooler temperatures and changing foliage with reduced insect pressure.
Winter closes most campgrounds, though refuge and state park lands stay open for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and wildlife observation.

How to book near Necedah
Wisconsin state park sites at Buckhorn, Mill Bluff, and Roche-A-Cri are reserved through the state's central system at wisconsin.goingtocamp.com. Reservations can be made up to 11 months before the start date of the reservation. Campsite availability for the date 11 months away becomes available at 9 a.m. Central Time for both Internet and telephone customers. Buckhorn offers family drive-in sites, cart-in sites, an outdoor group camp, and an accessible cabin, with a mix of standard and electric sites. Any motor vehicles brought into the property require a vehicle admission pass, which can be purchased at the property or in advance.
Private resorts including Summer Hideaway RV Campground Resort LLC and Buckhorn Campground Resort book directly through their own offices, generally by phone or their websites. For summer weekends, book state park sites the day the 11-month window opens, and confirm hookup type, site length, and dump station access when reserving an RV site.
What to expect on the ground
State park sites in this area lean rustic. Buckhorn's family campsites each have a picnic table and campfire ring, with a limited number of electric sites and accessible electric sites. Mill Bluff's small campground has 21 sites, 6 with electrical hookups, primitive amenities with pit toilets and no showers, and potable water available from hand pumps. Travelers used to full-service RV parks should plan for basic facilities and dump-station use rather than in-site sewer at the state parks.
Cell service is patchy on refuge back roads, and many township roads crisscross the refuge with not all passable, which can confuse navigation apps. Route to Headquarters Road off Highway 21 rather than trusting GPS. Bears can be present at Buckhorn, so follow food-storage precautions. Bugs peak in June and July: pack repellent.
