Camping near Norwalk, Wisconsin
Norwalk sits in the Driftless Area of western Wisconsin along the Elroy-Sparta State Trail, considered the first rail-to-trail conversion in the United States and a 32.5-mile route with three rock tunnels connecting five small towns between Sparta and Elroy. The village serves as a mid-route stop on the trail, with a trailhead, village park, and campground area near the route through town.
RV travelers use Norwalk as a base for exploring the surrounding coulee country, including Wildcat Mountain State Park, a ridge park above the Kickapoo River that offers camping for families, groups, and horseback riders, with roughly twenty-one miles of hiking, nature, and equestrian trails. The Kickapoo Valley Reserve is an 8,569-acre tract of land between the villages of La Farge and Ontario, adding paddling and backcountry sites to the area's options.
Nearby campgrounds range from state-park sites to private RV parks. Horse Camp - Wildcat Mountain State Park, Tunnel Trail Campground, Leon Valley Campground, Kickapoo Valley Reserve - OO Steinmetz Camp, and West Fork Sportsmans Club are all within a short drive.
Things to do near Norwalk
Biking the Elroy-Sparta State Trail is the main draw. Three railroad tunnels over 140 years old highlight the trail: the tunnels near Kendall and Wilton are each about 0.25 miles long, and the tunnel between Norwalk and Sparta is 0.75 miles long. Flashlights and jackets are recommended, since the tunnels are dark and cool even on bright days and water can trickle onto the trail from springs above. Bikers walk their bikes through the tunnels.
Wildcat Mountain State Park offers overlooks of the Kickapoo River valley, a nature center, and interpretive trails including the Hemlock Nature Trail. Paddlers float the Kickapoo River, which winds through the Kickapoo Valley Reserve past sandstone outcroppings. Anglers target trout in the area's Driftless spring creeks, and West Fork Sportsmans Club sits within that spring-creek network.
Off the trail, riders find small-town diners in Norwalk, Wilton, and Kendall, plus bike rentals in Sparta and along the route.

The main camping season along the trail corridor runs May through mid-October. The Horse Camp at Wildcat Mountain State Park is open May 1 to November 14 annually, while the park's family and cart-in campgrounds operate on a longer schedule. Summer weekends fill quickly along the trail, especially around holidays, so booking early is important for the busiest sites.
Spring brings cool temperatures, wildflowers, and higher water on the Kickapoo River, which suits paddlers. Fall delivers strong color in the hardwoods, with mid-October typically peak color in the Driftless Area, along with lighter trail traffic. The three tunnels on the Elroy-Sparta State Trail are closed annually from November 1 to April 30, which effectively closes the through-route for bikers during that window.
Winter shifts the area to snowmobiling and cross-country skiing. Snowmobiles are permitted on the trail, and operators must follow Wisconsin snowmobile laws. The trail is also open to walking, bicycling, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing, though it is not groomed and users share it with snowmobiles.
How to book a campsite near Norwalk
Wisconsin state park sites are reserved through the state's Going to Camp system, with reservations available up to 11 months in advance of the arrival date. Wildcat Mountain State Park has campgrounds for families and individuals, groups, and people with horses, and all three types of sites can be reserved online. A Wisconsin State Park System vehicle admission pass is required on all motor vehicles stopping in state parks, forests, and recreation areas, and a state trail pass is required for anyone 16 or older bicycling the Elroy-Sparta.
Private campgrounds book directly. Tunnel Trail Campground, Leon Valley Campground, and West Fork Sportsmans Club each handle their own reservations by phone or through their websites.
The Kickapoo Valley Reserve uses a permit system. All campers must register and obtain camping permits before setting up camp; permits are available online or at the Visitor Center the day of arrival or up to 45 days in advance, and sites are primitive with no water or toilet facilities.
What to expect on-site
Sites in the area range from full-service private parks to primitive backcountry. Wildcat Mountain family campsites feature amenities such as a dump station, showers, fire rings, picnic tables, and flush toilets, with a maximum RV length of about 35 feet and only a limited number of sites offering electric hookups. Cell service is spotty in the coulees, so downloading maps before arriving is wise.
Private parks along the trail typically offer more amenities than the state park, including hot showers, camp stores, and family-oriented recreation. The Kickapoo Valley Reserve, by contrast, is primitive with no water or toilets on site, so campers there pack in everything and pack out waste.
Expect quiet-hour enforcement, campground hosts in season at the state park, and Wisconsin firewood-movement rules that restrict bringing wood from outside the area.
