Camping near Ontario, Wisconsin
Ontario sits in Vernon County in southwestern Wisconsin's Driftless Area, a landscape of steep ridges, deep valleys, and sandstone outcrops shaped by the fact that the last continental glaciation never reached this region. The village straddles the Kickapoo River and functions as a small hub for paddlers, cyclists, and anglers exploring the surrounding public lands.
Wildcat Mountain State Park sits on a ridge rising steeply above the Kickapoo River, with sandstone bluffs topped with limestone providing views over the narrow river valley. Just downstream, the Kickapoo Valley Reserve is an 8,569-acre tract of land located between the villages of La Farge and Ontario, jointly managed by the state of Wisconsin and the Ho-Chunk Nation through the Kickapoo Reserve Management Board.
RV renters have a mix of options within a short drive: a state park campground on the ridge, primitive reserve sites along the river, and privately run campgrounds tied to the Elroy-Sparta State Trail. Named options nearby include the Horse Camp at Wildcat Mountain State Park, Kickapoo Valley Reserve - OO Steinmetz Camp, Tunnel Trail Campground, West Fork Sportsmans Club, and Leon Valley Campground.
Things to do around Ontario
Paddling the Kickapoo River is the signature activity. Local outfitters in the village rent canoes and kayaks, and the slow, winding current suits families and first-time paddlers. Wildcat Mountain State Park covers roughly 3,643 acres and offers about 21 miles of scenic hiking, nature, and equestrian trails, including the short Ice Cave Trail and the Hemlock Nature Trail.
Cyclists head for the Elroy-Sparta State Trail. Three railroad tunnels over 140 years old highlight the route; the tunnels near Kendall and Wilton are each about a quarter mile long, and the tunnel between Norwalk and Sparta is about three-quarters of a mile long. Flashlights and jackets are recommended in the tunnels, which stay around 50°F year-round.
Anglers target trout on the West Fork of the Kickapoo and its tributaries, and equestrians ride color-coded loop trails inside Wildcat Mountain. Amish bakeries and farm stands dot the back roads.

The camping season in this part of Wisconsin runs primarily from spring through mid-fall. At Wildcat Mountain State Park the family and cart-in campgrounds are open year-round, while the equestrian campground operates May 1 through November 14. Tunnel Trail Campground opens seasonally from May 1 to October 15, and other private campgrounds tied to the bike trail follow a similar window.
Summer weekends fill first. Bike-trail campgrounds book up ahead of holiday weekends, and Wildcat Mountain's ridgetop sites are popular for their overlook views. The three tunnels on the Elroy-Sparta State Trail are closed annually from November 1 to April 30, largely for bat conservation, which shifts cycling demand into the shoulder months.
Fall brings hardwood color across the Driftless ridges and cooler nights. Winter camping is possible at Wildcat Mountain, with cross-country skiing available inside the park, but most private options along the bike trail are closed.
How to book in Ontario
Wisconsin state park sites, including Wildcat Mountain's family, group, and horse campgrounds, are booked through the state's reservation system at wisconsin.goingtocamp.com. A state park vehicle admission sticker is required for entry. All three campground types at Wildcat Mountain can be reserved online.
Kickapoo Valley Reserve uses a separate permit system. All campers are required to register and obtain camping permits prior to setting up camp; permits are available online or at the Kickapoo Valley Reserve Visitor Center the day of arrival or up to 45 days in advance, and sites are primitive with no water or toilet facilities.
Private campgrounds handle their own bookings directly. Tunnel Trail Campground and Leon Valley Campground take reservations by phone or through their websites, and West Fork Sportsmans Club is run by a local sportsmen's organization; check the operator's site for current availability and membership requirements.
What to expect on the ground
Access roads in this area are winding and hilly. Wildcat Mountain State Park sits atop a ridge overlooking the Kickapoo River Valley, reached via steep roads that require careful navigation. Larger rigs should check site dimensions before booking, and drivers should watch grade on entry and exit.
Amenities vary widely by site type. The family campground at Wildcat Mountain has 30 reservable sites, each with a picnic table and fire ring, and the campground has flush toilets, showers, and a dump station. Private campgrounds along the bike trail offer pools, laundry, and water and electric hookups. Reserve sites along the Kickapoo are primitive and pack-in, pack-out.
Cell coverage is patchy across the ridges. Firewood is sold at the campground offices, and Wisconsin DNR regulations restrict bringing firewood in from outside the local area to slow the spread of invasive pests.
