Rib Mountain camping overview
Rib Mountain sits just southwest of Wausau in north-central Wisconsin, at the base of a quartzite ridge that rises to 1,942 feet above sea level, making it the third-highest point in Wisconsin. The village is a practical base for RV travelers exploring the upper Wisconsin River corridor, with state parks, county campgrounds, and private RV parks all within a short drive.
Rib Mountain State Park itself is a day-use property with picnicking, hiking trails, and a reservable amphitheater; there is no overnight camping at the park. RV travelers typically stay at nearby options such as Lake Dubay Shores Campground to the south, River's Edge Campground, Ridgewood Campground, and Cozy Inn Motel and RV Park, while Council Grounds State Park near Merrill offers the closest state-run campground to the north.
Most sites in the region are wooded, family-oriented, and geared toward paddling, fishing, and hiking rather than resort-style amenities. Reservations concentrate on the May to October window.
Things to do around Rib Mountain
The headline attraction is Rib Mountain State Park. About 15 miles of hiking trails cross the ridge, including the Turkey Vulture Trail that loops the old quartzite quarry, and a 60-foot observation tower delivers views of the Wausau area and the Wisconsin River.
Water recreation anchors the surrounding parks. Council Grounds State Park offers wooded trails, a sandy swim beach, fishing docks, and a boat landing with access to the Wisconsin River and Lake Alexander. Lake Dubay to the south is popular for boating, swimming, and walleye fishing.
In winter, Granite Peak on the north face of Rib Mountain is Wisconsin's largest ski area, with 55 trails across 225 acres of skiable terrain and 700 feet of vertical drop, drawing skiers and snowboarders from across the Midwest.

The primary camping season in the Rib Mountain area runs late spring through mid-fall. Council Grounds State Park's family and group campsites are open from May 1 to October 31, with shower, toilet, and dump station facilities available seasonally from roughly mid-May to mid-October. Private campgrounds nearby follow similar windows, generally opening after ice-out and closing before hard freeze.
Summer is the busiest stretch, with July and August weekends filling well ahead. Fall brings a strong second peak: cool crisp weather and hardwood color make the summit trails especially rewarding, with September and October highs typically in the mid-40s to mid-60s Fahrenheit, chilly nights, few bugs, and lower humidity.
Winter shifts the region toward ski, snowshoe, and ice-fishing use. Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are common winter activities at Council Grounds, but most RV amenities such as showers and dump stations are shut down for the cold months.
How to book near Rib Mountain
Wisconsin state park campsites, including those at Council Grounds State Park, are booked through the Wisconsin DNR reservation system (Going to Camp), online or by calling 1-888-947-2757. Sites can be reserved as far as 11 months in advance of the planned arrival date, and same-day reservations are also accepted. A Wisconsin vehicle admission pass is required for every vehicle entering a state park in addition to the campsite fee.
Private campgrounds in the area, such as Lake Dubay Shores Campground, River's Edge Campground, Ridgewood Campground, and Cozy Inn Motel and RV Park, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. For holiday weekends and peak summer, booking two to three months out is prudent; for shoulder-season weekdays, shorter lead times usually work.
What to expect on-site
Expect wooded, forest-canopy sites rather than open RV resort layouts. Council Grounds is a heavily wooded campground with 55 sites, 19 of which have electric hookups, plus flush toilets, showers, and a trailer dump station. Each site includes a picnic table and fire ring.
Hookups are limited compared with commercial parks: many state and county sites offer electric only, with a shared dump station rather than in-site sewer. Cell coverage is generally reliable near Wausau but can thin out in river valleys.
Black bears are present in the area, so proper food storage is important. Only certified firewood or wood sourced within 10 miles of a Wisconsin state park is allowed on-site, to avoid moving pests between regions.

Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Rib Mountain, Wisconsin. The state of Wisconsin does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) or special endorsement for any RV available on RVezy, including big Class A motorhomes and fifth wheels you might take up to Rib Mountain State Park. You just need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and we'll confirm your ID through the platform during booking. Visiting from abroad? wisconsindot.gov/Pages/dmv/license-drvs/how-to-apply/dr-license.aspxWhat protection is included when I book an RV in Rib Mountain?
Every RVezy booking near Rib Mountain comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit Highway 51 or the climb up Rib Mountain Drive feeling covered. During checkout you choose your protection level (not the host), and each tier covers most accidental physical damage to the RV up to the plan limits. That means if a branch scrapes the roof or you ding a step, you're not on the hook for the full repair. It's not personal auto insurance, but it does provide serious peace of mind, especially if it's your first time renting an RV in Rib Mountain.

RVezy (not individual hosts) sets the cancellation policy for every Rib Mountain RV rental, and there is a money-back grace period after booking so you can lock in dates around Granite Peak ski weekends or the Wausau Log Jam without anxiety. Refund eligibility depends on how far in advance you cancel relative to your trip start date. For full details, review the RVezy cancellation policy or reach out to RVezy support before you commit.

Yes, pet-friendly RV rental options in Rib Mountain are plentiful on RVezy. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter and you'll see hosts who welcome dogs, often with no extra fee. Rib Mountain State Park allows leashed pets on most trails (including the Quarry and Turkey Vulture Trails), and the nearby Nine Mile County Forest Recreation Area has miles of dog-friendly trails. For a great dog day, hike the Bluebird Trail, then let your pup splash at Sunnyvale Park's off-leash dog area in Wausau. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet deposit and bedding preferences.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/petsinparksCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near Rib Mountain State Park?
Yes, RV delivery in Rib Mountain is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it's perfect for first-timers or fly-in travelers landing at Central Wisconsin Airport (CWA). Many local hosts will tow a travel trailer or fifth wheel straight to nearby campgrounds like Rib Mountain Campground, Lake DuBay Shores in Mosinee, or a private lot in Weston or Schofield. They'll level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before handing you the keys. Just filter for Delivery on the listing search to compare hosts. Bonus: skipping the tow up Highway 51 means you arrive relaxed and ready to hike Granite Peak.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Rib%20Mountain%2C%20WisconsinHow do mileage limits work for an RV rental in Rib Mountain?
Mileage is flexible, and several hosts in the Rib Mountain area offer RV rentals with unlimited mileage, which is gold for road-trippers. Most hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with extra miles charged around $0.30 to $0.45 each. That's plenty for a typical Rib Mountain RV trip since Wausau to Door County is about 175 miles, Wausau to Minneapolis is roughly 235 miles, and Wausau to Wisconsin Dells is about 110 miles. Each listing spells out the mileage policy in its pricing section, so you can pick the host whose plan fits your route. Pro tip: longer loops up to the Apostle Islands (about 230 miles north) are where unlimited mileage really pays off.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Rib%20Mountain%2C%20WisconsinWhere can I stay overnight in an RV near Rib Mountain?

Reserve early through Wisconsin DNR or the Marathon County parks website.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/ribmtWhen is the best time to take an RV trip to Rib Mountain?

September and early October bring fall colors across the quartzite ridges and crisp 55 to 70 degree days, ideal for hiking the Sunset and Turkey Vulture Trails. Winter (December to March) draws skiers and snowboarders to Granite Peak Ski Area right on Rib Mountain, with reliable snow and temps often from the teens to upper 20s. Spring (April to May) is quieter and cheaper, though pack layers since nights can still dip near freezing.
weather.gov/grb/Can I rent an RV in Rib Mountain in winter for a Granite Peak ski trip?
Yes, a winter RV rental in Rib Mountain is one of the coolest ways to ski Granite Peak Ski Area, which sits right on Rib Mountain and has Wisconsin's longest vertical drop. Many hosts will deliver and connect the RV to shore power at a winter-friendly site so you don't have to manage freezing water lines yourself. After a day on the slopes, cocoa by the fire in your motorhome rental will have you wondering why you ever stayed in a hotel.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Rib%20Mountain%2C%20WisconsinHow much should I budget for fuel on a Rib Mountain RV trip?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable on any RV trip, but it's easy to plan for around Rib Mountain. Expect a Class C motorhome to get 8 to 10 miles per gallon, a Class B campervan around 16 to 20 mpg, and a truck-and-travel-trailer setup roughly 10 to 12 mpg. Wisconsin gas prices typically run a bit below the national average, with stations along Highway 51 and Interstate 39 (Kwik Trip is the local favorite for clean restrooms and good prices). For a 4-night loop from Wausau to Door County and back (about 400 miles), budget roughly $130 to $180 in fuel for a Class C. Filling up in Mosinee or Rothschild is usually cheaper than near the ski hill.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Rib Mountain?
Booking 3 to 6 months ahead is the sweet spot for the best campgrounds near Rib Mountain, especially for summer weekends and fall color season. Wisconsin State Park campsites (like Council Grounds in Merrill) open on a rolling 11-month window through the Wisconsin DNR reservation system. Marathon County parks like Big Eau Pleine and Dells of the Eau Claire take reservations through the county parks portal. Private parks like Lake DuBay Shores and Rib Mountain Campground often book up by April for July and August. Pro tip: midweek Sunday through Wednesday is much easier to grab last-minute, and many RVezy hosts will deliver to any reserved site.

Interstate 39 and Highway 51 run straight through Wausau with two lanes each direction, plus generous shoulders and truck-friendly grades. The climb up Rib Mountain Drive into the state park is steep but paved and well-signed. In summer, watch for festival traffic during Wausau's Concerts on the Square and Log Jam. Winter brings snow and occasional ice from late November to mid-March, so confirm with your host that the RV has good tires and an enclosed underbelly. Deer are common at dawn and dusk on rural roads, especially County Highway N and Highway 29. Check 511 Wisconsin for live road and weather conditions before you roll.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Rib%20Mountain%2C%20WisconsinHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
