Campgrounds near Rothschild, Wisconsin
Rothschild sits along the Wisconsin River in Marathon County, just south of Wausau and within a short drive of central Wisconsin's lakes, state parks, and paved river trails. The area works well as an RV base: interstate access via I-39 runs through town, and campgrounds on Lake DuBay, along the Wisconsin River, and around Merrill are all reachable in under an hour.
The closest full-service RV option is Lake Dubay Shores Campground in nearby Mosinee, a large lakeside park on a peninsula of the 6,800-acre reservoir with a boat launch, swimming pool, and a mix of hookup options. River's Edge Campground and Ridgewood Campground offer additional private options south and west of town, while Cozy Inn Motel and RV Park provides simpler overnight parking for travelers passing through.
For a state-park experience, Council Grounds State Park sits about 30 minutes north near Merrill along the Wisconsin River and Lake Alexander. It is the closest Wisconsin state park campground with reservable sites, making it the anchor for public-land camping in the region.
Things to do near Rothschild
Rib Mountain State Park, just west of Rothschild, is the headline outdoor stop. It is largely a day-use park with hiking trails across a quartzite ridge, an observation tower with views over the Wisconsin River valley, and Granite Peak Ski Area on the north face for winter skiing and snowboarding. Rib Mountain does not have a drive-in campground, so RV travelers stay elsewhere and visit for the day.
Around town, families can visit the Rothschild Pavilion for events along the river, catch a film at nearby cinemas in Wausau, or explore downtown Wausau's riverfront district. For water time, Lake DuBay supports fishing for walleye, bass, muskie, panfish, catfish, and northern pike year-round, with boat access at Lake Dubay Shores Campground and public launches along the reservoir.

Central Wisconsin has a humid continental climate with long, cold winters and short, warm summers. The prime RV season runs from mid-May through September, when campground amenities are fully open, lakes are warm enough to swim, and daylight is longest. Summer months tend to be the wettest of the year, so pack rain gear even in peak season.
Spring shoulder season, roughly late April to mid-May, brings cool nights, muddy trails, and the return of biting insects near the water. Wisconsin state park water systems, including showers and flush toilets, may not be running until around May 15, and nights can still drop below freezing. Fall color typically peaks from late September into early October and is a strong window for hiking Rib Mountain.
Winter is cold and snowy, with the Wausau area averaging around 56 inches of snow per year. Council Grounds State Park closes for the camping season on October 31 and reopens May 1, so winter RV options in the immediate area are limited to private parks that stay open year-round.
How to book near Rothschild
Council Grounds State Park uses the Wisconsin DNR reservation system, operated through Wisconsin.GoingToCamp.com or by calling 1-888-947-2757. Sites can be booked for the same day of arrival or up to 11 months in advance, and a reservation is required before setting up on any site. All motor vehicles entering a Wisconsin state park also need a vehicle admission pass, available at the property or in advance.
Private campgrounds near Rothschild, including Lake Dubay Shores Campground, River's Edge Campground, Ridgewood Campground, and Cozy Inn Motel and RV Park, book directly through the operator by phone or website rather than through the DNR system. Summer weekends and holidays fill first, especially lakeside sites with hookups, so reserve several weeks out for July and August and earlier for fall-color weekends.
What to expect on-site
Expect wooded, shaded sites on rolling terrain. Council Grounds has a heavily wooded family campground of about 52 sites plus 3 group sites, with 19 sites offering electric hookups; flush toilets, showers, and the dump station operate seasonally from roughly mid-May to mid-October. Sites can be uneven, so bring leveling blocks.
Lake Dubay Shores Campground has around 219 sites with a mix of tent, electric, electric-water, and full-hookup options at 20, 30, and 50 amp, plus fire rings, picnic tables, a swimming pool, boat launch, playground, laundry, and Wi-Fi. Cell coverage is generally reliable along the I-39 corridor but can drop in wooded river valleys further north.
Bring bug spray in early summer, buy firewood locally to help prevent the spread of tree pests, and expect leashed pets to be welcome at most area campgrounds.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Rothschild%2C%20WisconsinDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Rothschild, WI?
You're in luck: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Rothschild, WI. Wisconsin only requires a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for recreational vehicles longer than 45 feet or with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) over 26,000 pounds, and virtually every rental on RVezy falls well below that threshold. You'll just need to be 25 or older with a valid driver's license, and RVezy verifies your ID right inside the booking flow. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your home license. Most first-time renters are surprised how straightforward the process really is.
wisconsindot.gov/Pages/dmv/license-drvs/how-to-apply/commercial.aspxWhat protection and roadside coverage come with my RV rental?
Every RV rental in Rothschild, WI booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance. The protection plan covers eligible accidental damage to the vehicle, giving you real peace of mind on Wisconsin's two-lane backroads, I-39 north toward Minocqua, or US-51 through the Northwoods. You choose your coverage level during checkout, with tiers ranging from essential to premium, so you can dial in the level of comfort that suits your trip. It isn't traditional auto insurance, but it's purpose-built for RV travel, which means you can focus on Rib Mountain's views instead of worst-case worries.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if my plans change? Can I cancel my Rothschild RV booking?
Yes, you can book your Rothschild RV trip with confidence because RVezy, not individual hosts, sets the cancellation policy. There's a grace period after booking during which you can cancel for a full refund, and additional protections apply in situations like natural disasters or severe weather, which matters in central Wisconsin where winter storms or spring flooding along the Wisconsin River occasionally reshape plans. The exact refund amount depends on how far out you cancel before your trip starts. The full policy details are available on the RVezy Help Center so you'll always know where you stand before committing.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Rothschild RV trip?
Absolutely. A pet-friendly RV rental Rothschild travelers love is easy to find on RVezy: just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter and you'll see motorhomes and trailers from hosts who welcome four-legged guests. Rothschild is a great base for dog owners because Rib Mountain State Park (about 10 minutes away) has leashed-dog trails with sweeping views, and Council Grounds State Park near Merrill offers a designated pet swim area on the Wisconsin River. Many hosts charge a small cleaning fee of $25 to $75 per pet, which you'll see upfront. Pro tip: pack a towel for muddy paws after spring hikes on Rib Mountain's rocky quartzite trails.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/ribmtCan the RV be delivered to my campground or driveway?
Yes, RV delivery in Rothschild is one of the easiest ways to start your trip stress-free. Many hosts will deliver the motorhome or trailer directly to popular spots like Rib Mountain State Park, Lake DuBay Shores Campground, or Council Grounds State Park, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. Delivery fees usually run a few dollars per mile from the host's home base, with some hosts offering free delivery within a set radius. To find delivery options, use the Delivery filter on RVezy, or message the host directly to confirm they'll come to your chosen site. This setup is perfect if it's your first time renting an RV.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Rothschild%2C%20WisconsinHow far can I drive on a typical Rothschild RV trip?
You'll have plenty of range for a great Rothschild RV trip. Most hosts on RVezy include 100 to 150 free miles per night, and many offer RV rental with unlimited mileage as an add-on for a flat daily fee, which is ideal if you're heading deep into the Northwoods. From Rothschild, Minocqua sits about 75 miles north on US-51, Door County is roughly 175 miles east, the Wisconsin Dells is 100 miles south, and the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore is about 215 miles northwest. Check the mileage policy on each listing before you book, and if you're planning a long loop, just message the host for a tailored package.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Rothschild%2C%20WisconsinWhere are the best campgrounds near Rothschild, WI?
You're spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Rothschild include Rib Mountain State Park (about 6 miles away, with electric sites and quartzite hiking trails right outside your door), Lake DuBay Shores Campground (15 miles south, with full hookups on a 6,800-acre flowage), Council Grounds State Park near Merrill (20 miles north, year-round wooded sites on the Wisconsin River), Big Eau Pleine County Park (20 miles west, with 106 sites on a forested peninsula), and Dells of the Eau Claire County Park (20 miles east, famous for its rocky river gorge). For RV camping Rothschild families repeat year after year, book Rib Mountain State Park 11 months out, the moment Wisconsin DNR opens the reservation window.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/ribmtWhen is the best time to rent an RV in Rothschild?
Late May through early October is the sweet spot for an RV rental in Rothschild, WI, with summer highs in July and August typically in the upper 70s to low 80s Fahrenheit and cool nights in the 50s that are perfect for campfires. September is a local favorite: fewer mosquitoes, vivid maple and oak fall colors that peak around late September through mid-October, and noticeably lower nightly rates. Winter RV trips are possible too, with several hosts offering four-season rigs for Granite Peak Ski Area visits, though daytime temps from December to February often sit in the teens to high 20s Fahrenheit. Pro tip: book the last week of September for peak foliage on Rib Mountain.
weather.gov/grb/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay in Rothschild?
You'll do great, and Rothschild is honestly one of the easiest places in Wisconsin to learn. The roads around the village are flat, wide, and lightly trafficked outside of rush hour, and US-51/I-39 has generous shoulders and clear signage all the way north to Minocqua. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, propane, the water system, and dumping, and you can text them anytime during your trip. If you're nervous about getting behind the wheel, choose a Class B campervan or a smaller travel trailer, or book delivery so the host handles the driving entirely. First time renting an RV? You're in friendly territory.
visitwausau.com/rothschild/What happens if something goes wrong on the road?
You're covered around the clock. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance for flat tires, lockouts, dead batteries, towing, and mechanical breakdowns, whether you're parked at Rib Mountain State Park or cruising US-51 toward Lake Superior. One phone call dispatches help to your exact location, and RVezy's customer support team is also available before, during, and after your trip to sort out anything non-mechanical, from a stuck slide to a missing pickup detail. Your host is usually a quick text away too, since they know their rig inside and out. Save both numbers in your phone before pulling out of the driveway and you'll never feel stranded.
wisconsindot.gov/Pages/travel/road/default.aspxWhat are the best RV road trips from Rothschild?
An RV road trip from Rothschild puts some of the Midwest's best scenery within an easy day's drive. Head north on US-51 about 75 miles to Minocqua and the Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest for legendary lake country, or continue about 215 miles northwest to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore on Lake Superior. Door County is a 175-mile eastern run filled with cherry orchards and lighthouses, while the Wisconsin Dells sit 100 miles south for waterpark family fun. Crossing into Minnesota or the Upper Peninsula of Michigan is straightforward, but travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Cross-border trips into Canada may be possible with host approval, so just ask before booking.
nps.gov/apis/index.htmHow much should I budget for fuel on an RV trip from Rothschild?
Fuel is one of the more predictable parts of an RV road trip from Rothschild. Expect a Class C motorhome to get 8 to 10 miles per gallon (MPG), a Class A roughly 6 to 8 MPG, a Class B campervan 16 to 20 MPG, and a tow vehicle pulling a travel trailer about 10 to 13 MPG. Wisconsin gas prices typically run close to the national average, and you'll find competitive diesel at the Kwik Trip and Pilot stations along I-39/US-51. For a typical 500-mile weekend in a Class C, budget around $200 to $275 for fuel. Pro tip: Kwik Trip's rewards app shaves a few cents per gallon and there are stations all over central Wisconsin.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Rothschild?
For Wisconsin State Park campgrounds like Rib Mountain or Council Grounds, book through the Wisconsin DNR reservation system up to 11 months in advance, especially for summer weekends and any site with electric hookups. County parks such as Big Eau Pleine and Dells of the Eau Claire typically open several months ahead through Marathon County's reservation portal, and private parks like Lake DuBay Shores often take bookings a year in advance for holiday weekends. If you're booking last-minute, target Sunday through Thursday nights, which often have openings even in peak July. Knowing where to park an RV in Rothschild starts with locking in the campground first, then booking your RV on RVezy.
wisconsinstateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are driving conditions like around Rothschild?
Driving conditions around Rothschild are very RV-friendly. I-39 and US-51 run right through the village with wide lanes, gentle grades, and frequent rest areas, and most local roads are flat and easy to navigate. Summer brings occasional thunderstorms, so check the Wisconsin 511 traffic site before heading out. From November through March, expect snow, ice, and reduced visibility, especially in lake-effect bands closer to Lake Superior. Watch for white-tailed deer at dawn and dusk year-round, particularly during the October-November rut. For tall rigs, stick to I-39/US-51 through the Wausau area where overpass clearances are generous.
511wi.gov/What hookups and dump stations can I expect at Rothschild-area campgrounds?
You'll find solid infrastructure at the campgrounds near Rothschild. Most state and county parks (Rib Mountain, Council Grounds, Big Eau Pleine) offer 30-amp electric sites with potable water spigots throughout the loops, and on-site dump stations included with your camping fee. Private parks like Lake DuBay Shores and Stoney Creek RV Resort provide full hookups, including sewer at the site and 50-amp service for larger Class A rigs. If you're boondocking or returning from a remote trip, the Camping World in Rothschild on Business 51 has a public dump and freshwater fill, as does the Pilot Travel Center just off I-39 at Exit 185. Always carry a 25-foot drinking-water hose and a 30-to-50 amp adapter.
dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/campingWhat features and amenities come standard in Rothschild RV rentals?
Most rigs are well-equipped. A typical motorhome rental in Rothschild on RVezy includes a queen or king bed, a full kitchen with refrigerator, three-burner propane stove, microwave, and sink, a wet or dry bathroom with shower and toilet, roof-mounted air conditioning, propane furnace, and dinette seating that converts to extra sleeping space. Class C and Class A motorhomes have factory-installed seatbelts for travel, and many hosts include a generator, outdoor awning, camp chairs, and outdoor griddle. Wi-Fi hotspots and Smart TVs are common add-ons. Pro tip: check the listing photos and amenities checklist carefully, and message the host if a specific item like a coffee maker or kids' bunks is a must-have.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Rothschild%2C%20WisconsinWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Hosts in the Rothschild area offer a wide menu of add-ons that turn a basic rental into a true vacation. Popular extras include linen and kitchen kits, generator hours, bike racks, kayak racks, outdoor griddles, fire pits, and pet packages. Most rentals run pickup-to-dropoff out of Rothschild, Wausau, Schofield, or Weston, but if you'd rather skip driving, add delivery and setup at checkout. Mileage policies vary, with 100 to 150 free miles per night common and unlimited-mileage upgrades available on many listings. A campervan rental in Rothschild can be picked up quickly and parked almost anywhere, while larger rigs may benefit from a host-arranged delivery to your campsite.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Rothschild%2C%20WisconsinHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and secure. When you book your RV rental Wisconsin trip on RVezy, you pay through the platform with a credit or debit card, with a portion charged at booking and the balance closer to your trip start date. The security deposit is held separately from your booking payment and is pre-authorized on your card before pickup, then released after a clean return with no damage or extra mileage. To avoid any deposit hiccups, do the walkthrough with your host at pickup, photograph the interior and exterior, return the RV with the agreed fuel and tank levels, and stay within your mileage allowance. Simple, transparent, and refundable.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent a four-season RV for a Rothschild winter trip?
Yes, and a winter RV trip can be genuinely magical in central Wisconsin. Several Rothschild-area hosts on RVezy list four-season rigs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, double-pane windows, and high-output furnaces, ideal for a family RV trip to Granite Peak Ski Area on Rib Mountain (just minutes from the village). Plug into a 30-amp or 50-amp shore power site at a private park with winter availability, keep the furnace on a low setting overnight, and rely on the freshwater tank rather than the campground spigot if temperatures drop below 20 degrees Fahrenheit. Pro tip: ask your host for a heated water hose and tank-warming kit, and confirm winter access at your chosen campground since some Wisconsin State Park campgrounds close or limit services in winter.
