Stetsonville camping overview
Stetsonville is a small village in Taylor County, Wisconsin, sitting in the north-central part of the state between Medford and Wausau. The surrounding landscape is rural: dairy farms, hardwood forest, and glacial terrain that suits slower-paced RV trips.
The area works as a practical base for reaching several distinct camping zones. To the east, Taylor and Lincoln counties hold stretches of county forest land used for camping, fishing, and ATV riding. To the south sit family-run properties in Clark County, and to the north lies Council Grounds State Park on the Wisconsin River in Lincoln County, near Merrill.
RV travelers near Stetsonville generally choose between three site types: state park campgrounds with electric hookups and reservable sites, county park campgrounds on smaller lakes, and privately run resorts offering full hookups. The nearby options below cover all three styles: Spirit Falls Camping, Wedges Creek Hideaway, Council Grounds State Park, Otter Lake Park Campground, and Brumley's Resort.
Things to do around Stetsonville
Water is the main draw. Council Grounds State Park sits along the Wisconsin River near the site of Native American encampments and offers family and group campsites, wooded trails, a beach area, and an accessible fishing pier. The park sits beside Lake Alexander, a reservoir noted for boating, kayaking, and canoeing, and anglers commonly catch northern pike, walleye, smallmouth bass, muskies, yellow perch, bluegills, and black crappies.
Land-based options are just as varied. The Ice Age National Scenic Trail crosses parts of Lincoln County and gives day-hikers access to glacial features. County forests carry marked ATV and snowmobile routes, and paddlers can put in on the Jump River, the Wisconsin River, and dozens of small flowages. During winter, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are permitted on the hiking trails at Council Grounds, which see heavy foot and bike traffic in summer.

The RV season in north-central Wisconsin is short and clearly defined. Council Grounds State Park's developed campground operates from spring through late October, and most other developed campgrounds around Stetsonville follow a similar window. Private resorts often extend a few weeks on either end, timed to fishing opener and deer season.
Summer is peak. Weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day book out first, and holiday weeks fill months ahead. Camping reservations are required and can be made for the same day of arrival or up to 11 months in advance, and campers must make a reservation before setting up on any site. A Wisconsin State Park System vehicle admission sticker is required on all motor vehicles stopping at state parks, forests, recreation areas, and trails.
Fall brings cool nights, hardwood color through late September and early October, and lighter crowds. Winter camping is limited to a handful of properties equipped for it; most private and county campgrounds close by early November and reopen once the ground thaws in spring.
How to book campgrounds near Stetsonville
State park sites use one central system. Reservations at Council Grounds State Park are required, can be made for the same day of arrival or up to 11 months in advance, must be made before setting up on any site, and are booked online through the Wisconsin DNR portal, which handles all state park properties.
County and private campgrounds each run their own systems. Otter Lake Park Campground and other county sites in the region are booked through county parks reservation portals, while Wedges Creek Hideaway, Spirit Falls Camping, and Brumley's Resort take bookings directly through their own websites.
For summer weekends and any holiday, aim to reserve two to three months out. Cancellations do open up: many campsite reservations are cancelled daily, and third-party notification tools can text campers when a suitable spot opens up.
What to expect on the ground near Stetsonville
Sites in this part of Wisconsin lean rural and wooded, and cell service can be spotty. Plan navigation and reservation confirmations before leaving pavement.
Hookups vary by property. County parks around the area typically provide electric service on most sites but no on-site sewer, so RVs use fill stations and shared dump stations. Private resorts more often provide full sewer, water, and electric at each site. Firewood should be bought locally, and the Friends of Council Grounds sell firewood during camping season at the park office, harvested sustainably from the park itself. Wisconsin restricts moving firewood to slow the spread of forest pests.
Expect biting insects from late May into July, black bear activity in forested zones (store food properly), and frequent afternoon thunderstorms in summer. Pets are welcome at Council Grounds when on a leash and supervised, but dogs are not allowed on the beach or in the picnic area.
