Campgrounds and RV parks near Tomah, WI

Cycling is the headline activity. Considered the first rail-to-trail in the United States, the Elroy-Sparta State Trail remains one of the most popular trails in the country, with three rock tunnels and five small towns along its 32.5-mile route. It follows the old Chicago and North Western railroad grade through the hills of the Coulee Region. Tunnel Trail Campground sits along the route and, per the operator, rents bikes to registered campers. Beyond the trail, families head to Noah's Ark Waterpark and the Wisconsin Dells attractions roughly 30 minutes east. The Kickapoo River offers slow-moving canoe and kayak trips through Wildcat Mountain State Park and the Kickapoo Valley Reserve. Local roads in Monroe County are open to ATVs and UTVs in many corridors, and Cashton hosts one of Wisconsin's largest Amish communities for shopping and farm stands. Warrens, north of Tomah, hosts the annual Cranberry Festival each September.

The practical camping season in the Tomah area runs from late April through mid-October. Most private campgrounds and the Elroy-Sparta Trail tunnels operate on this window; the tunnels are closed annually from November 1 to April 30. Wisconsin winters are cold and snowy, and most private grounds close entirely. Summer brings the crowds. July and August are peak, with warm days averaging in the upper 70s Fahrenheit, warm evenings, and heavy weekend demand. Reserve full-hookup and pull-thru sites well in advance for holiday weekends and the September cranberry festival window. June is the wettest month, with an average around 121 mm of precipitation over roughly 13 rainy days, so expect thunderstorm afternoons. Spring shoulder season in May and fall from mid-September through early October offer cooler nights, thinner crowds, and strong fall color across the Coulee Region bluffs. Trail bugs drop off after the first frost. Bring layered clothing, as overnight lows can dip near freezing on either edge of the season.

Private campgrounds in the Tomah area cater to RV travelers with full hookups, level pull-thrus, cabins, and family amenities. Oakdale KOA Journey offers long pull-thru sites, a seasonal pool, Wi-Fi, and family features such as a jump pad and game room per the operator. In addition to tent camping and RV hookups, Tunnel Trail also offers cabins, a heated pool, mini golf, laundry, bike rentals and an on-site grocery, everything you need for a cycling adventure. Expect variable cell coverage in the coulees, especially at valley campgrounds. Campers are reminded that only certified firewood or firewood originating from within 10 miles of the park is allowed into the park. Mosquitoes and biting flies peak in June and July near wooded and marshy sites, so pack repellent.
