Camping near Wausau, Wisconsin
Wausau sits along the Wisconsin River in north-central Wisconsin, surrounded by forested state lands, glacial lakes, and rolling terrain shaped by the last ice age. The area gives RV travelers a mix of state park camping, private lakeside resorts, and quieter river sites, all within a short drive of downtown grocery stores, fuel, and dump stations.
The closest developed public option is Council Grounds State Park, located along the Wisconsin River and Lake Alexander near Merrill. Private lakeside campgrounds sit south of the city on the Wisconsin River flowage, including Lake Dubay Shores Campground near Mosinee. Additional private and river-adjacent options in the region include River's Edge Campground, Ridgewood Campground, and Sure-wood Forest Campground, each drawing anglers, families, and weekend paddlers.
Most campgrounds in the Wausau area operate on a warm-season schedule, roughly mid-April through October, while Council Grounds State Park keeps its campground reservable year-round for cold-weather RV camping. Site types range from rustic tent pads to full-hookup sites suitable for larger motorhomes and travel trailers.
Things to do around Wausau
The Wisconsin River is the region's backbone for recreation. Anglers target walleye, musky, smallmouth bass, and northern pike on Lake Dubay, Lake Alexander, and the river itself, while paddlers use quieter flowages and marked canoe routes. Boat launches at both public parks and private resorts make it easy to keep a boat or kayak at the RV site.
Rib Mountain State Park, on the south edge of Wausau, offers a summit observation tower, hiking, and mountain biking, and converts to a downhill ski hill at Granite Peak in winter. The Ice Age National Scenic Trail runs through nearby Lincoln County, giving hikers long day-hike options.
In town, families can visit the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum, the riverfront whitewater course at Wausau Whitewater Park, and downtown farmers markets on summer Saturdays.

Summer is the primary RV season. From mid-June through late August, daytime highs typically sit in the mid-70s Fahrenheit, lakes are warm enough for swimming, and every campground in the region is open. This is also when weekends book out first, particularly holiday weekends and any dates tied to Wausau-area festivals or fishing tournaments.
Spring and fall are quieter shoulder seasons. May brings blackflies and mosquitoes near water but also strong walleye fishing and open sites without long lead times. September and early October deliver reliable fall color across the hardwood forests of Marathon and Lincoln counties, with cool nights that suit campfire evenings. Many private campgrounds close by late October.
Winter camping is limited. Council Grounds State Park keeps its campground reservable for RVs year-round, but showers, water systems, and the dump station typically run only from mid-April through late September, so cold-weather campers need to arrive with full fresh tanks and empty grey and black tanks.

How to book a campsite near Wausau
Wisconsin state park sites, including Council Grounds State Park, are reserved through the Wisconsin DNR reservation system at wisconsin.goingtocamp.com or by calling 1-888-947-2757. Bookings open up to eleven months ahead of the arrival date, and reservations are required before setting up on any site. A Wisconsin State Park vehicle admission sticker is also required and can be bought online, at the park office, or at a self-registration kiosk.
Private campgrounds such as Lake Dubay Shores Campground, River's Edge Campground, Ridgewood Campground, and Sure-wood Forest Campground handle their own reservations directly by phone or through their websites. Lakefront and full-hookup sites at the private resorts sell out earliest, especially for Friday and Saturday nights in July and August, so booking two to three months out is a safer target for summer weekends.
What to expect on the ground
Sites in this region tend to be shaded and wooded, with mature pine, oak, and maple cover. That helps with summer heat but can complicate leveling and satellite reception, and some older private parks have narrow interior roads and tight turns that are difficult for rigs over about 35 feet. Confirm site length and clearance directly with the campground when booking a larger RV.
Cell coverage is generally solid along the I-39 and US-51 corridor and thinner in the forested pockets north and west of Merrill. Expect biting insects near water from late May through July, so bring repellent and screens. Firewood should be bought locally or at the park to comply with Wisconsin's rules against moving firewood, which are in place to slow the spread of invasive pests.
