Campgrounds and RV parks near Wilton, WI

Wilton sits in Monroe County in the Driftless Area of west-central Wisconsin, in a valley where tributaries of the Kickapoo River pass through steep, unglaciated hills. The village is best known as a midpoint on the Elroy-Sparta State Trail, widely acknowledged as the oldest rail-trail conversion in the United States, a 32.5-mile route through five small towns with three rock tunnels. That trail, plus proximity to state parks and the Kickapoo River corridor, makes the area a compact base for RV travelers who want cycling, hiking, and river paddling within short drives. Closest to town, Tunnel Trail Campground sits on State Highway 71 with hookups, cabins, and direct access to the bike trail. Wildcat Mountain State Park, about a half hour south near Ontario, offers a family campground and a separate Horse Camp for equestrians. Mill Bluff State Park lies east toward Camp Douglas, and Oakdale KOA Journey provides RV sites near I-90/94. For primitive, permit-based camping, Kickapoo Valley Reserve - OO Steinmetz Camp offers wooded, hike-in sites reached from parking areas.

Wisconsin state park campsites at Wildcat Mountain and Mill Bluff are reserved through the state's online system on ReserveAmerica, or by phone. A Wisconsin State Park vehicle admission sticker is required on all motor vehicles entering state parks, and a separate state trail pass is required for anyone 16 or older biking the Elroy-Sparta State Trail. Walking and hiking do not require the pass. A permit is required to camp at Kickapoo Valley Reserve, and reservations must be made online through the reserve's official system rather than first-come, first-served. Private options like Tunnel Trail Campground and Oakdale KOA Journey take direct bookings by phone or through their websites.
