Campgrounds and RV parks near Fox Farm-College, WY

Downtown Cheyenne holds the Wyoming State Capitol, the Cheyenne Frontier Days Old West Museum, and the Cheyenne Depot Museum, all within a ten-minute drive. Families often pair a day in town with a stop at the Cheyenne Botanic Gardens or a ride on the seasonal Cheyenne Street Railway trolley. Outdoor options sit close by. Curt Gowdy State Park, about 24 miles west, offers reservoir fishing, mountain-bike trails, and hiking around Granite, Crystal, and North Crow reservoirs. Farther west, Vedauwoo in Medicine Bow National Forest is known for granite rock formations, scrambling, and picnic sites. For a day trip, Fort Laramie National Historic Site lies about two hours northeast, and the Colorado front-range parks near Fort Collins are under an hour south on I-25.

The Cheyenne area has a short, busy warm season and a long cold one. The best window to visit runs from mid-May to September, when private RV parks are fully staffed and state park campgrounds are open with water systems on. July is the hottest month, with average highs in the low 80s Fahrenheit and average overnight lows near the mid 50s. Late July brings Cheyenne Frontier Days, a ten-day rodeo and festival that fills every RV site within a wide radius. Reservations for that stretch should be locked in many months ahead. Spring is the wet season: May is the wettest month, averaging close to 3 inches of precipitation, and afternoon thunderstorms with hail are common from May through July. Winter is long and cold. December is the coldest month, with average highs around 40°F and overnight lows in the upper teens. Many private parks stay open year-round on limited services, but Curt Gowdy shuts water off October 1 and shifts to first-come camping through mid-May, and mountain access roads to the west often become impassable due to snow and wind between November and April.

Expect wind. Cheyenne sits on the open High Plains and sustained gusts are routine, especially in spring. Level pads and awning tie-downs matter. Overnight temperatures drop sharply even in July, so pack layers and confirm furnace propane before leaving. Most private parks near Fox Farm-College are laid out as flat, gravel or paved pull-through lots with full hookups and Wi-Fi, oriented toward highway travelers and rally overflow rather than shaded, forested camping. For a more scenic setting, plan a day trip or a second night at Curt Gowdy State Park or the Vedauwoo area. Cell coverage is strong across the Cheyenne metro and along I-25 and I-80. Coverage thins quickly once traveling into the national forest west of town, so download maps before heading out.
