Campgrounds and RV parks near South Greeley, WY

Cheyenne is the main draw. Families can tour the Wyoming State Capitol, walk the Cheyenne Botanic Gardens, and see the Big Boy steam locomotive at Holliday Park. Cheyenne is known for the annual Cheyenne Frontier Days, a longstanding rodeo and cultural event, held in late July, which drives RV bookings months in advance. Outdoor days center on Curt Gowdy State Park and Vedauwoo. Curt Gowdy features three reservoirs, Granite, Crystal and North Crow, with trout and kokanee salmon fishing, plus boating on Granite and Crystal. The park is a well known destination for mountain bikers, hikers, archery enthusiasts and those just looking for a relaxing getaway. At Vedauwoo, visitors scramble granite rock formations or hike through wildflower fields. Terry Bison Ranch, just south of Cheyenne, offers bison tours, horseback riding, and a working-ranch experience that pairs well with a stay at its on-site RV park.

The prime RV season around South Greeley runs from late spring through early fall. May through September offers the best camping weather around Cheyenne, with warm days and cool nights driven by the 6,000-plus-foot elevation. Late July is the busiest stretch of the year due to Cheyenne Frontier Days, and private parks in the Cheyenne area routinely sell out weeks ahead for that window. Shoulder seasons carry trade-offs. Late spring brings wildflowers, while early fall offers color with fewer crowds, but the highest level of rainfall occurs in May, and afternoon thunderstorms are common through summer. Thunderstorms occur frequently during the warmer months and can produce hail, strong winds, and occasionally tornadoes. High winds are a year-round factor on the plains, so awnings and slide toppers need attention. Winter camping is possible but limited. Camping is available year-round at Curt Gowdy, although most campsites are reserveable only May 15 through September 30, and access, water service, and road conditions vary. Several private parks around Cheyenne operate year-round for extended-stay guests.

Expect open, high-plains scenery rather than forest. South Greeley itself is flat and exposed, and most private RV parks are gravel-pad, full-hookup layouts positioned for easy interstate access rather than seclusion. Sites are typically pull-through or long back-in, suitable for larger rigs and towables. Wind is the defining local condition. Several reviewers at Curt Gowdy noted sustained winds reaching 40-70 mph during their stays. Gusts can pick up quickly on the plains, so level the rig with the nose into prevailing wind and stow loose gear. Afternoon thunderstorms build fast in summer, especially over the Laramie Range, and hail is possible. Cell service and grocery access are reliable across the Cheyenne metro. Watch for pronghorn and mule deer throughout the area, and keep food secured. If heading up to Curt Gowdy or Vedauwoo, expect cooler temperatures, thinner air at 7,000-plus feet, and quicker weather changes than in town.
