This was my first time renting a trailer to camp in. I couldn’t have picked a better host! He was extremely communicative and though we had no problems I know if I did we would have been taken care of right away! I can wait to rent this trailer again. 2024 Winnebago Class C
This Winnebago was awesome and turned out to be perfect for our trip! It was easy to handle on the road, easy to setup, and so nice and comfortable inside. We had four adults, one toddler, and a small dog for a weekend trip and had plenty of room for everyone. The RV is packed with everything you might need, with plenty of space for your own belongings. Joe was so helpful and was available when we had to trouble shoot the power (total user error). This was our first time RV dry camping and we were setup with every thing we needed. Great experience, we hope to rent this RV again in the future!

Horsetail Fall

Picture a thin ribbon of water on El Capitan catching the last light so it looks like liquid fire. That is Horsetail Fall in Yosemite National Park, a winter phenomenon that draws photographers and dreamers when skies stay clear and the fall is running. Arriving in your own RV means a warm kitchen, your own bed, and a flexible base for cold evenings after the walk back from the viewing area. Let the valley cliffs and the Merced River frame a trip you will talk about for years.

I've never rented an RV before. Will I actually figure this out?

You absolutely will, and Columbia is a forgiving place to start. Every RVezy host gives you a full pickup walkthrough covering the generator, water systems, slide-outs, awning, and driving tips before you leave with the rig. You can message hosts before booking with any first time renting an RV questions, and 24/7 roadside assistance is included if anything comes up on the road. Highway 49 between Sonora and Columbia is a gentle two-lane road with wide shoulders, ideal for getting comfortable behind the wheel. Pro tip: filter for Class B campervans or smaller Class C motorhomes for your first trip, they drive nearly like an oversized van.

Fuel is the biggest variable, but it's easy to plan for. Class C motorhomes around Columbia average 8 to 10 miles per gallon (mpg), Class A's run 6 to 8 mpg, and Class B campervans can hit 18 to 22 mpg. California gas prices typically run $4.75 to $5.25 per gallon in Tuolumne County, with stations in Sonora generally cheaper than Columbia itself. For a typical 300-mile loop hitting Columbia, Yosemite, and New Melones Lake, budget $150 to $250 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: fill up in Sonora on Mono Way before heading into the Sierra, prices climb quickly once you pass Groveland toward Yosemite.

How far in advance should I book a campground near Columbia?

For peak season, sooner is better. California State Parks like nearby Calaveras Big Trees release reservations 6 months in advance through ReserveCalifornia, and Yosemite campgrounds open 5 months out on Recreation.gov at 7 a.m. Pacific. For private parks like 49er RV Ranch and Marble Quarry RV Park, aim for 2 to 3 months ahead for summer weekends and holidays. Off-season (November to March) you can often book a week out. Pro tip: set a reservation alert on ReserveCalifornia for cancellations, last-minute openings pop up regularly even at sold-out parks, and the 6-month rolling window means new dates open every morning at 8 a.m. Pacific.

What are the local driving conditions like around Columbia?

Driving around Columbia is mostly relaxed, with a few mountain-specific things to know. Highway 49 (the main Gold Country route) and Parrotts Ferry Road are two-lane roads with curves and gentle grades, very manageable in a Class B or C rental. Heading toward Yosemite on Highway 120, expect steeper climbs near Priest Grade, where many drivers use New Priest Grade for a gentler ascent in an RV. In winter, Caltrans may require chains above 3,000 feet, especially toward Pinecrest and Sonora Pass (Highway 108 closes seasonally). Pro tip: check QuickMap from Caltrans before heading into the high country, it gives live road conditions, chain controls, and closures.

You'll find a great mix. Full-hookup parks like 49er RV Ranch and Marble Quarry RV Park offer 30 and 50 amp electric, water, sewer, Wi-Fi, hot showers, laundry, propane, and dump stations on site. Public options like Tuttletown Recreation Area at New Melones Lake have water and vault toilets but typically no hookups, with a dedicated dump station at the entrance (often free for paid campers). Most parks near Columbia have potable water fills available. Pro tip: if you're boondocking at a dry site, top off freshwater and dump at 49er RV Ranch on your way through town, they sell dump-and-fill services to non-guests for a small fee.

How do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?

Payment is simple and secure. You pay through the RVezy platform with a credit card at the time of booking, no cash exchanged with the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment and released after the trip once the RV is returned in the same condition you picked it up. The platform handles the entire transaction, including dispute resolution if anything comes up. Do a thorough walkthrough at pickup, take date-stamped photos of the exterior, interior, and tanks, and message the host through RVezy so everything is documented. Pro tip: return the rig clean and with the same fuel level shown at pickup for the fastest deposit release.

Can I rent an RV in Columbia in the winter, and how do I handle the cold?

Yes, a winter RV rental in Columbia is a hidden gem, the town transforms into a Dickens-style village with Miners Christmas weekends every December. Daytime highs sit in the 50s Fahrenheit, nights drop to the 30s, and snow typically stays above 3,000 feet, so Columbia at about 2,100 feet usually sees rain rather than heavy snow. Look for RVs with heated holding tanks, a working furnace, and 30 or 50 amp shore power, and book a full-hookup park like 49er RV Ranch where water lines stay usable. Pro tip: ask your host for a heated water hose and run a small space heater on shore power to save your propane for cooking and overnight heat.
