Lac Cardinal anchors most outdoor activity in the area. At Queen Elizabeth Provincial Park, RVers can hike or mountain bike along shaded boreal forest trails, swim from the beach, and use the hand launch for canoes and kayaks. The shallow lake does not support a fish population, but its vegetation makes strong habitat for waterfowl, and over 140 bird species have been recorded in the park, which is equipped with a bird viewing platform. Figure Eight Lake Recreational Area is stocked annually with rainbow trout and allows electric motors only, which keeps the lake quiet for fishing, paddling, and swimming. Sulphur Lake Provincial Recreational Area is aerated to support brook and rainbow trout, with a pier, fish cleaning station, and a 12 km/h speed limit on power boats.

The camping season in this part of northern Alberta is short and weather-driven. Most provincial campgrounds in the area open around the May long weekend and close by early to mid October, in line with the general Alberta Parks pattern of operating from mid-May to the end of September. Cold spring weather can delay services at Queen Elizabeth, where potable water has at times been unavailable for the May long weekend opening, with non-potable water at campground taps until the system fully starts up. July and August are peak months, with warm days, long daylight hours, and the heaviest visitor demand at lakeside sites. Wildfire smoke and fire bans are realistic risks across the Peace Country in mid to late summer, so checking Alberta Wildfire status before departure is sensible. Shoulder season trips in September bring cooler nights, fewer bugs, and good birding. Winter access is limited; at Sulphur Lake, for example, snow plowing is only periodic, which restricts ice fishing access.

Expect rustic, lake-focused camping rather than full-resort amenities. Queen Elizabeth Provincial Park has a mix of power and unserviced sites tucked into forest along Lac Cardinal, with fire pits, picnic tables, potable water when available, washrooms, a playground, picnic shelter, hand launch and pier, and a sewage dump station. Some smaller sites in the area accept cash or cheque only at self-registration kiosks, so plan payment in advance. Figure Eight Lake provides roughly 23 unserviced sites in mixed forest, suitable for both RVs and tents, with potable water, a hand boat launch, fire pits, cook shelters, and a lakeside trail. Sulphur Lake has around 11 unserviced sites with pit toilets, fire pits, and picnic tables, but no drinking water and no firewood for sale: bring water and buy firewood locally to avoid spreading forest pests. Cell coverage is patchy outside the village core.
