Campgrounds and RV parks near Northern Lights County, AB

Water and forest are the main draws. At Queen Elizabeth Provincial Park, Lac Cardinal supports swimming, sailing, windsurfing, and water skiing, with shady forest trails for hiking and mountain biking and roughly 140 bird species recorded in the park. Figure Eight Lake is stocked annually with rainbow trout, allows only electric motors, and has a picnic shelter, boat launch, playground, and hiking trails. At Notikewin Provincial Park, campers paddle the river, hike forested trails, bike, and fish for walleye or northern pike from shore. Twin Lakes Provincial Recreational Area has a walking trail circling the lake. The county also sits under dark northern skies, making aurora viewing realistic on clear nights from late fall through early spring.

Northern Lights County has a short, intense camping season. Most provincial campgrounds in the area operate from mid-May through early October, with shoulder months dependent on snow and road conditions. June through August deliver long daylight hours, with sunset well after 10 p.m. near the summer solstice. Peak demand falls on July and August weekends and on the Canada Day and August long weekends, when lakeside sites at Queen Elizabeth and Figure Eight fill quickly. Spring brings mud, lingering ice on smaller lakes, and the Alberta road-ban period, when seasonal weight restrictions on local roads can affect access for heavier rigs. Summer is also wildfire season across northern Alberta, and fire bans or smoke advisories can appear with little notice. At Queen Elizabeth, low water levels have reduced the boat launch to a hand launch for canoes and kayaks, so check current advisories before towing in. Winter use is limited to ungroomed activities such as cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

Expect rustic conditions at most provincial sites and limited cell coverage between towns. Notikewin is an unserviced, treed campground with firepits, firewood, picnic tables, and pit or vault toilets, but no potable water on site, so haul fresh water in. Figure Eight Lake sites are also unserviced but accommodate RVs and tents, with a forested lakeside trail, boat launch, and seawall. Queen Elizabeth offers a mix of power and unserviced sites along the lake with fire pits, picnic tables, potable water, washrooms, hiking trails, a hand launch and pier, a playground, picnic shelter, and a sewage dumping station. Black bears live throughout the region, so use bear-safe food storage. Bring bug spray for mosquitoes and horseflies in summer, and pack layers: nights can drop sharply even in July.
