Campgrounds and RV parks near Chemainus 13, BC

In town, the self-guided mural walk covers dozens of large-scale outdoor paintings that trace local history, and the Chemainus Theatre Festival runs professional productions through much of the year. The waterfront has a small-boat harbour, a foot-passenger ferry to Thetis and Penelakut Islands, and easy shoreline walking. Outdoor options are close by. The Cowichan Valley Trail and Kinsol Trestle suit cycling and walking, while Cowichan Lake, the Chemainus River, and Stocking Lake offer swimming and paddling in warmer months. Hikers can head to Mount Tzouhalem or Maple Mountain for coastal viewpoints. Families often pair a day at the murals with a visit to a Cowichan Valley farm stand, a trip to nearby Duncan (the "City of Totems"), or a ferry hop to Salt Spring Island for the Saturday market.

The east coast of Vancouver Island has a mild maritime climate, and Chemainus sees a strong wet-season and dry-season split. The rainy season falls during November, December, and January, bringing heavy precipitation, so RV travellers focused on outdoor activities generally target late spring through early fall. Summer is the peak window. July is the driest month, with roughly 30 to 40 mm of precipitation across the month, and daytime highs typically sit in the low to mid twenties Celsius. This is when private RV resorts around Chemainus, Ladysmith, and Nanaimo book out furthest ahead, and BC Parks reservations for popular provincial campgrounds are competitive. Shoulder seasons are quieter. May, June, and September usually deliver reasonable weather with more availability, though evenings can be cool and rain is possible. Winter travel is feasible for RVers comfortable with wet conditions, but some private parks reduce services or close portions of their sites during the coldest, wettest months.

Most private RV parks near Chemainus offer full or partial hookups, potable water, dump stations, and Wi-Fi of varying quality. Larger resorts add pools, playgrounds, laundry, and clubhouses that suit families with kids. Rural sites tend to have larger, more spaced pads with more trees and less amenity infrastructure. Road access is straightforward. Highway 1 runs directly past Chemainus, with clearly signed exits, and most campgrounds are within a short drive of the highway. Large Class A rigs and trailers can navigate the area, though a few side roads to smaller parks are narrow and winding. Cell coverage is generally strong in town and along the highway corridor and weaker in more forested inland pockets. Black bears, deer, and raccoons are present, so standard food-storage practices apply.
