Campgrounds and RV parks near Cowichan Valley H, BC

Tubing and swimming on the Cowichan River is the signature summer activity, with put-ins near Lake Cowichan and take-outs downriver. The Cowichan River Trail runs along the valley floor and is easy for families on foot or bike. Mount Prevost and Mount Tzouhalem are the harder local hikes, with viewpoints over the valley and Salish Sea. Coastal communities of Cowichan Bay, Mill Bay, Crofton, and Maple Bay offer waterfront dining, boat charters, and wildlife watching for seals, sea lions, and estuary birdlife. Roosevelt elk can be seen inland toward Youbou. Wineries, cideries, and farm stands along the Cowichan Wine Trail are close to most RV parks and pair well with rest days between drives.

July and August are peak season. Days are warm and dry, rivers are safe for tubing, and private RV parks run at or near full capacity. Reserve as early as possible for weekends, and expect midweek to be easier for walk-in and last-minute stays. Late spring and early fall are strong shoulder seasons. May, June, and September usually give mild days, cooler nights, and lower demand at private parks. Provincial park sites in the area often open in spring and close in October, so confirm operating dates before arriving. Winter camping is possible because valley temperatures usually stay above freezing, but rain is frequent from November through February and some private parks reduce services or close sections. Recent seasons have also brought hotter, drier summers with wildfire smoke and drought impacts across the region, so check current fire bans and river-flow advisories in July and August before planning campfires or river days.

Most private parks in the valley offer full or partial hookups, potable water, dump stations, flush washrooms, and hot showers. Sites are typically treed and level, and many accommodate rigs up to 40 to 45 feet. Confirm length and slide-out clearance when booking a specific site. Cell coverage is reliable in the Duncan, Chemainus, and Nanaimo corridors and weaker in the backcountry west of Lake Cowichan. Grocery stores, propane, and RV supplies are easy to find along Highway 1. Bring layers even in summer, since evenings cool quickly under the coastal marine influence. Fire bans are common in July and August, so pack a propane fire pit if campfires matter to the trip.
