Campgrounds and RV parks near Midway, BC

The Kettle Valley Rail Trail is the main draw. The rail bed was removed between Midway and Penticton in 1980, and the corridor is now part of the Trans Canada Trail, a shared-use route used for cycling, hiking, horseback riding, and cross-country skiing where conditions allow. Midway marks the official eastern trailhead. The Kettle River itself supports swimming, tubing, and trout fishing, with a bait ban in effect on the river above Cascade Falls from April 1 to October 31. Kettle River Recreation Area, a short drive west, has sandy river beaches, a bike pump track, a playground, and the iconic Kettle River Trestle at its day-use area. Greenwood, often cited as Canada's smallest city, offers cafes, a pub, and a walkable historic core, and the former B.C. Copper Company smelter site near Boundary Creek Provincial Park is worth a short stop.

The camping season in the Boundary Region is defined by BC Parks operating dates. Kettle River Recreation Area typically opens in late April and runs through late September, while Boundary Creek Provincial Park generally operates from early May to late September. Private parks near Midway and Greenwood tend to follow a similar May-through-September window, with some flexibility on shoulder-season dates. July and August are peak. Reservable sites at Kettle River fill early, river water is warm enough for tubing and swimming, and daytime highs frequently reach the high twenties Celsius. Wildfire smoke and short-term campfire bans can occur in mid to late summer, so travellers should check advisories before arrival. Spring and fall bring cooler nights and lighter crowds. Spring campers get large, sun-filled sites and open availability, while fall offers stable weather into September. Winter shuts most campgrounds down, and the valley receives moderate snowfall that supports limited cross-country skiing and snowshoeing along the KVR.

Highway 3 runs directly through Midway, so most campgrounds are reached by paved road with straightforward RV access. Boundary Creek Provincial Park was rebuilt in 2016 and can now accommodate larger RVs, though sites remain unserviced with pit and flush toilets and two cold-water taps only. Kettle River Recreation Area has flush and pit toilets, hot showers free for registered guests, drinking water posts, and two sani-stations with a small discharge fee. Private parks in the area generally offer full or partial hookups, laundry, and pull-through sites suitable for big rigs. Cell coverage is reasonable in town but drops off on backroads. Black bear activity is normal in the valley, so food storage rules apply. Poison ivy grows along parts of the Kettle River, and swimmers should be aware of undercurrents, submerged rocks, and variable water levels.
