Campgrounds and RV parks near Burnt Islands, NL

The southwest coast pairs coastal scenery with short, accessible hikes. From J.T. Cheeseman Provincial Park, visitors can walk Cape Ray Beach, look for the endangered Piping Plover, and follow river trails to two small waterfalls. Less than thirty pairs of this migratory shorebird frequent Newfoundland and Labrador between May and August each year, so signage and leash rules around the beach are taken seriously. The historic granite lighthouse at Rose Blanche is a short drive east of Burnt Islands along Route 470 and is a popular family stop. The Codroy Valley, reached from Grand Codroy RV Tent Camping Park, is known for birdwatching and salmon and trout angling, with the Cape Anguille Lighthouse marking the most westerly point of the island. Further inland, Barachois Pond Provincial Park offers 150 forested campsites, two sandy beaches, a boat launch, and the Erin Mountain hiking trail at 3.5 km one-way.

Camping on Newfoundland's southwest coast is a short, defined season. Most provincial camping parks are scheduled to open for the Victoria Day weekend, with some others opening in late May, and they close in mid-September. J.T. Cheeseman and Barachois Pond both follow this pattern, with services and reservations limited to that window. Private parks such as Pirates Haven RV Park and Chalets generally open a little earlier and stay open later into the fall, while Grand Codroy RV Tent Camping Park runs through the warmer months and is busiest in July and August. July and August deliver the warmest, driest weather and the longest daylight, but they also coincide with peak ferry traffic and the highest demand for waterfront sites. June is cooler and often foggy along the coast but quieter on the road. September brings crisp nights, fewer bugs, and good shoulder-season availability before parks close. Winter is not a practical RV season here: most campgrounds are shut, and the coast is exposed to strong winds, freezing rain, and heavy snowfall.

The Port aux Basques area is known for strong, gusty winds funnelling through Wreckhouse, fog that can roll in quickly along the coast, and rapidly changing conditions even in summer. RV awnings should be packed away when sites are unattended, and levelling blocks are useful, as some private sites are graded but not perfectly flat. Services are basic but reliable. J.T. Cheeseman offers 75 campsites in a forested area, of which 22 have 15, 30 and 50 amp electrical service, each site includes a picnic table, fireplace and vehicle space, water taps and outhouses are located throughout the park, and a wheelchair accessible comfort station with flush toilets, showers and an adjacent trailer dumping station sits within the camping loop. Barachois Pond offers 150 forested sites, two sandy beaches, a boat launch and the Erin Mountain trail, with amenities including showers, dump station and picnic tables, though cell coverage can be patchy in the woods. Grocery stops are easiest in Port aux Basques and Stephenville.
