Campgrounds near Ailsa Craig
Ailsa Craig is a small village in North Middlesex, southwestern Ontario, roughly 30 kilometres northwest of London and within a short drive of Lake Huron's shoreline at Grand Bend. The area sits in rolling farmland cut by the Ausable River, which makes it a practical base for RV renters heading to the beach, the Pinery, or the Rock Glen area.
Campground choice near the village is a mix of private family parks and membership resorts. Birch Bark Tent and Trailer Park and Trout Haven Park sit closest to Ailsa Craig itself. A short drive west, Rock Glen Family Resort operates as a members-only RV park in Arkona (Lambton Shores), overlooking Rock Glen Falls. Ruston Family Campground and RV Resort lies toward Grand Bend, and Prospect Hill Campground rounds out the closest options.
Most private parks in this area lean seasonal and family-oriented, with serviced sites, pools, and planned activities rather than backcountry camping. Ontario Parks land in the region, such as Pinery Provincial Park on Lake Huron, is close enough for day trips from any of these campgrounds.
Things to do near Ailsa Craig
The Lake Huron shoreline is the main draw. Grand Bend's main beach and the dune-and-forest trails at Pinery Provincial Park are both within roughly a 30 to 45 minute drive, and Ipperwash Beach sits a similar distance west.
Inland, the Rock Glen Conservation Area near Arkona is known for its waterfall and fossil-rich shale beds. Rock Glen Family Resort sits adjacent to a 67-acre conservation area, with direct access to hiking trails and the waterfall. The Ausable River corridor offers paddling and fishing, and the Arkona Fairways golf course is nearby.
Rainy-day options include the shops and restaurants in Grand Bend and the museums and Storybook Gardens in London. Several private campgrounds in the area run on-site programming, pools, mini-golf, and playgrounds aimed at families.

The main camping season in southwestern Ontario runs from the Victoria Day long weekend in late May through Thanksgiving weekend in mid-October. July and August are peak, driven by Lake Huron beach traffic through Grand Bend and Pinery Provincial Park, and serviced sites at popular parks often book out weeks in advance for summer weekends.
Shoulder months are quieter and cooler. Spring can be wet, with muddy sites and river levels running high after snowmelt. Fall brings hardwood colour through late September and early October, cool nights, and a sharp drop in crowds after Labour Day.
Winter camping is limited. Most private parks in the area close or restrict operations from late October to April, though a few offer extended-season or year-round sites. Rock Glen Family Resort operates year-round for members, with some sites set up for extended-season use. RV renters travelling outside the core season should confirm gate access, water service, and dump-station availability before booking.

How to book campgrounds in the area
Ontario Parks campgrounds, including Pinery Provincial Park on the Lake Huron shore, are booked through the central Ontario Parks reservation system, which opens bookings on a rolling five-month window at 7:00 a.m. Eastern Time. Summer weekends and full-service sites at Pinery release quickly, so setting a reminder for the five-month mark is standard practice.
Private campgrounds around Ailsa Craig each run their own reservation system, usually through their websites or by phone. Rock Glen Family Resort is a members-only RV park, so access there depends on membership or a member's invitation rather than public nightly booking.
For family parks like Birch Bark Tent and Trailer Park, Trout Haven Park, Ruston Family Campground and RV Resort, and Prospect Hill Campground, book direct and confirm RV length, hookup type, and pet rules before arrival.
What to expect on arrival
Roads into Ailsa Craig off Highway 7 and County Road 22 are paved and suitable for larger rigs, but rural lanes leading to individual campgrounds can be narrow with tight turns. Cell coverage is generally reliable but can dip in wooded river valleys along the Ausable.
Sites at nearby private parks trend toward serviced (15/30-amp electric, water, some sewer) with gravel or grass pads. Amenities usually include pools, laundry, playgrounds, and a small store. Rock Glen has around 100 campsites with partial or full hook-ups, plus cabins and indoor and outdoor pools.
Groceries, fuel, LP refills, and RV supplies are easiest to source in Parkhill, Exeter, Strathroy, or London before turning off to smaller campgrounds. Firewood is typically sold on-site, and most Ontario campgrounds restrict bringing in outside wood to limit invasive pests.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Ailsa Craig, ON
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Ailsa Craig, ON?
RV rental in Ailsa Craig is affordable compared to big-city Ontario pricing, which makes it a smart base for a Lake Huron trip. Expect roughly $150 to $220 per night for travel trailers and around $250 to $375 per night for Class C and Class A motorhomes, with many hosts offering weekly and monthly discounts. To find a cheap RV rental in Ailsa Craig, travel mid-week, book outside the July to August peak, or filter by travel trailers, which are usually the best value. Pro tip: bundling a host's delivery option with a weekly discount often costs less than driving back and forth from London yourself.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Ailsa%20Craig%2C%20OntarioWhat kind of driver's license do I need to rent an RV in Ailsa Craig?
Your regular full Class G driver's licence is all you need to rent an RV in Ailsa Craig and drive almost any motorhome, campervan, travel trailer, or fifth wheel on RVezy. Ontario allows a full Class G licence to operate motor homes up to 11,000 kilograms, which covers virtually every Class B, Class C, and most Class A rentals on the platform. Approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID through the booking process, so there is nothing extra to print or mail. Visiting from abroad? Your valid home-country licence works, and an International Driving Permit is recommended if it isn't in English or French. Then you're set to explore Lake Huron country.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs the RV protected if something happens during my trip?
Yes, every RV rental in Ailsa Craig booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can drive away from Middlesex County feeling fully supported. The protection plan covers most damages to the vehicle during your trip, and during checkout you can choose between different coverage levels to match how adventurous your itinerary is. Whether you're parked at Pinery or rolling down Highway 7, you get real financial peace of mind. Pro tip: take a quick walkaround video at pickup with your host, share it through the RVezy app, and you'll have a clear record that makes the whole trip even smoother.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Ailsa Craig RV trip?
Booking is low-risk because RVezy sets a consistent cancellation policy across every listing, not the host, and there is a money-back grace period after booking so you can lock in your dates with confidence. Refund eligibility depends on how far in advance you cancel, and the full details are spelled out on RVezy's Help Center before you confirm. Southwestern Ontario weather can shift between lake-effect snow squalls in shoulder season and clear summer skies, so it's reassuring to know the policy is the same on every listing. Pro tip: message the host first if your plans wobble, since many are flexible on date changes when their calendar allows.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Ailsa Craig?
Yes, a pet-friendly RV rental in Ailsa Craig is easy to find. Toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see hosts in the North Middlesex area who welcome dogs and sometimes cats. The region is great for dog owners: Pinery Provincial Park has leashed-pet beach access along Lake Huron, and the trails through the rare oak savanna offer shade for hot August days. Many private parks in the area also allow pets at most sites. Pro tip: pack a collapsible water bowl and a towel for sandy paws after the Pinery beach, and confirm any pet fee with your host through the in-app message before booking.
ontarioparks.ca/park/pineryCan the RV be delivered to my campground near Ailsa Craig?
Yes, RV delivery in Ailsa Craig is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it's a game-changer if it's your first time renting an RV. Many local hosts will tow the trailer or drive the motorhome directly to Pinery Provincial Park, Sun Retreats Ipperwash, or even a private driveway, then level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system. Use the Delivery filter on the search page to see which hosts offer this, along with their delivery fee. Pro tip: delivery to Pinery is especially smart since the park has long check-in lines on summer weekends, and a pre-set RV lets you skip a lot of that hassle.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Ailsa%20Craig%2C%20OntarioHow does mileage work and how far can I realistically travel from Ailsa Craig?
Hosts set their own mileage policies, and many Ailsa Craig listings include a generous daily allowance with optional unlimited mileage add-ons, perfect for a longer Ontario RV road trip. From Ailsa Craig you're well placed: Grand Bend and Pinery Provincial Park are about 30 kilometres west, London is roughly 40 kilometres southeast, Bayfield and the Huron Coast are about 55 kilometres north, Stratford is around 70 kilometres east, and Toronto is about 230 kilometres via Highway 401. Even a week-long loop toward Bruce Peninsula National Park fits comfortably. Pro tip: check the mileage cap on the listing page before booking, and if you're planning a bigger circuit, message the host about unlimited mileage pricing upfront.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Ailsa%20Craig%2C%20OntarioWhat are the best campgrounds near Ailsa Craig for an RV trip?
You're spoiled for choice for RV camping in Ailsa Craig and the surrounding North Middlesex area. Pinery Provincial Park (about 30 km west on Lake Huron) is the regional standout, with over 1,000 campsites across Riverside, Dunes, and Burley campgrounds and 10 km of beach. Sun Retreats Ipperwash is a resort-style park on the lake with full hookups, and there are several smaller private parks scattered through the surrounding farmland. London Conservation Authority parks like Fanshawe are also within easy reach. Pro tip: Pinery is the crown jewel, so reserve it as soon as the five-month booking window opens at reservations.ontarioparks.ca.
ontarioparks.ca/park/pinery/campingWhen is the best time of year for an Ailsa Craig RV trip?
The sweet spot for RV camping in Ailsa Craig is mid-May through mid-October, when daytime highs run from the low 20s to around 30 degrees Celsius and the Lake Huron beaches are at their best. July and August are peak season with the warmest swimming weather, while late May, June, and September are local favourites for thinner crowds, fewer mosquitoes, and golden-hour sunsets over the lake. October brings spectacular fall colours through the Ausable River valley. Winters are cold and snowy with lows often well below freezing, but Pinery stays open year-round for adventurous RVers with four-season rigs. Pro tip: book a September shoulder-season week for the magic combo of warm water and quiet campgrounds.
climate.weather.gc.ca/climate_normals/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?
Yes, and Ailsa Craig is one of the friendlier places in Ontario to learn. The roads around North Middlesex are flat, wide, and lightly trafficked, which is ideal for a first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving, leveling, the propane system, holding tanks, and slide-outs, and they stay reachable by phone or message during your trip. A renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance are included with every booking. Pro tip: do a short practice loop on the country concession roads west of town before heading to Pinery, and you'll feel like a pro by the time you reach the campground gate.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I get a flat tire or break down during my trip?
You're covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire, dead battery, lockout, or tow situation is one phone call away from being handled, whether you're on Highway 7 near Ailsa Craig or deep in Pinery Provincial Park. Your host is also a direct resource and usually replies quickly via the RVezy app for quirky questions like how to relight the water heater. Pro tip: snap a photo of the RV's tire info and licence plate at pickup, save the RVezy support number to your phone before leaving Ailsa Craig, and you'll have everything you need within reach if anything pops up.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my RV across the border into the United States?
Yes, an RV road trip from Ailsa Craig into the U.S. is very doable, and the Blue Water Bridge at Sarnia is only about 80 kilometres southwest, putting Michigan, Ohio, and beyond within easy reach. Many RVezy hosts allow cross-border travel, but confirm directly with your host before booking since insurance and protection coverage must extend to the U.S. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Bring your passport, the RV's registration and insurance documents the host provides, and a copy of your RVezy trip confirmation. Pro tip: a popular loop heads from Ailsa Craig through Sarnia to Michigan's Sleeping Bear Dunes, then back via Mackinac and Tobermory for an unforgettable Great Lakes circle.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on an Ailsa Craig RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable in your budget, so here is a realistic picture: Class C motorhomes typically get about 16 to 20 L/100km, Class B campervans are more efficient, and travel trailers add roughly 20 to 30 percent fuel use to your tow vehicle. Gasoline in the London and North Middlesex area generally runs in the $1.40 to $1.65 per litre range, with the lowest prices often at stations in Strathroy or Parkhill on the way out of town. For a 500 km Lake Huron loop in a Class C, plan for roughly $200 to $300 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Strathroy before heading to Pinery, since gas in Grand Bend tends to be higher per litre.
ontario.ca/page/gasoline-pricesHow far in advance should I book campgrounds near Ailsa Craig?
Book early and you'll thank yourself. Ontario Parks releases reservations through reservations.ontarioparks.ca exactly five months in advance of your arrival date, and Pinery Provincial Park sites for summer weekends and long weekends often disappear within minutes of opening. Set a calendar reminder for 7 a.m. on your five-month-out date. Private parks like Sun Retreats Ipperwash also fill up for July and August, so aim to book by March or April. Pro tip: if Pinery looks fully booked, keep checking, since cancellations free up sites daily, and shoulder-season weeks in June and September often have great last-minute availability for a relaxed family RV trip in Ailsa Craig.
reservations.ontarioparks.ca/What are local driving conditions like around Ailsa Craig?
Driving conditions around Ailsa Craig are about as RV-friendly as Ontario gets. The terrain is flat farmland with straight concession roads, light traffic, and no mountain passes or tight switchbacks to worry about. Highway 7 and Nairn Road are the main connectors, and even Highway 81 down to Grand Bend is a calm two-lane drive. Summer brings occasional thunderstorms, so check Environment Canada before long stretches behind the wheel. Watch for slow-moving farm equipment in spring and fall, and deer at dawn and dusk on rural roads. Pro tip: avoid Highway 21 between Grand Bend and Bayfield on Sunday afternoons in July, when cottage traffic heading home can crawl for an hour.
weather.gc.ca/Do campgrounds near Ailsa Craig have hookups, dump stations, and water fills?
Yes, the local campground scene is well set up for RVers. Pinery Provincial Park has electrical sites in Riverside and Dunes but no water or sewer at individual sites; instead it has sanitation stations with potable water fill and dump platforms (expect a short line on summer weekends). Sun Retreats Ipperwash offers full hookups and resort amenities including 30 and 50 amp electric, water, sewer, and laundry. Several smaller private parks in the surrounding area also provide full hookup sites. Pro tip: fill your fresh water tank and dump before leaving Pinery rather than waiting until you're back in Ailsa Craig, since most local gas stations don't have RV dump facilities.
ontarioparks.ca/park/pinery/campingWhat features and amenities come with a typical motorhome rental in Ailsa Craig?
A motorhome rental in Ailsa Craig usually means a fully equipped home on wheels. Most Class C motorhomes and travel trailers on RVezy sleep 4 to 8 people, with real beds (queen in the bedroom, often a bunk and convertible dinette), a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with toilet and shower, propane furnace, roof AC, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many include a TV, outdoor speakers, awning, and an onboard generator or solar setup for dry camping. Internet is usually via your phone hotspot since cell coverage at Pinery campsites can be spotty. Pro tip: each listing has a detailed amenity list, so filter by Sleeps and Generator if you're planning to boondock or host a bigger family group.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Ailsa%20Craig%2C%20OntarioWhat add-ons and pickup options should I expect when I rent an RV in Ailsa Craig?
Hosts in the Ailsa Craig area typically offer a useful menu of add-ons to customize your trip: linens and bedding packages, kitchen kits, camping chairs and outdoor rugs, bikes or kayaks, generators, and propane top-ups. Delivery and setup to Pinery, Ipperwash, or Grand Bend area campgrounds is common, usually priced per kilometre from the host's home base. Standard pickup is at the host's location with a 30 to 60 minute orientation, and dropoff is usually back at the same spot with fuel tank and holding tanks at agreed levels. Pro tip: ask about the host's Pinery delivery package since some offer a flat-rate bundle that includes setup, takedown, and even a starter propane tank.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Ailsa%20Craig%2C%20OntarioHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through the RVezy platform with a credit card when you book, so no cash changes hands with the host. A refundable security deposit is held on your card before pickup (commonly $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV), and it's released back to you after the trip once the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. The renter protection plan included with your booking covers most accidental damage, so the deposit is a small safety net separate from your booking payment. Pro tip: document the RV's condition with photos at pickup and dropoff inside the RVezy app, and your deposit return process will be smooth and usually quick.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Ailsa Craig in winter, and is it worth it?
Yes, winter RV rental is possible and quietly magical in this corner of Ontario. Some Ailsa Craig hosts list four-season RVs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and reliable furnaces, and Pinery Provincial Park's Riverside Campground stays open year-round with electrical sites, a winterized comfort station, and cross-country ski and snowshoe trails right out your door. Expect January and February lows around minus 10 to minus 15 degrees Celsius. Pro tip: confirm with your host that the RV is rated for cold-weather use, plug into 30-amp shore power at your campsite, use a heated water hose or fill the fresh tank instead, and you'll have a cozy winter campervan rental Ailsa Craig adventure all to yourself.
