Camping near Central Elgin, Ontario
Central Elgin sits on the north shore of Lake Erie in Elgin County, southwestern Ontario, with Port Stanley at the mouth of Kettle Creek serving as its best-known waterfront community. The municipality is part of the London census metropolitan area, which makes it a practical base for RV travellers looking for beach access, small-town harbours, and inland conservation lands within easy reach.
RV options in the area range from full-service private resorts to a large conservation-authority campground. Camper's Corner RV Campground and Golden Pond RV Resort sit inland toward London and Highway 401, while Spring Lake RV Resort is set on a spring-fed lake in nearby Oxford County. Maple Grove Christian Retreat Centre offers a quieter, group-oriented alternative.
For a public-land option, Fanshawe Conservation Area on the northeast edge of London operates a large campground with a reservoir, trails, day-use area, splash pad, and canoe rentals, giving families a full-amenity park close to the city.
Things to do around Central Elgin
Port Stanley's Main Beach is the main summer draw. It has earned the internationally recognized Blue Flag designation, which recognizes beaches that meet rigorous standards for water quality, environmental management, safety, accessibility, and visitor services, and Port Stanley was the first beach on Lake Erie to earn the distinction in 2010. The Municipality of Central Elgin operates four public beaches in Port Stanley: Main Beach, Little Beach, Erie Rest Beach, and Pumphouse Beach, each with seasonal washroom facilities and beach access. Camping tents and large shelters are not permitted on Central Elgin beaches, and alcohol, smoking, and vaping are not permitted on beaches or in public areas.
Inland, the Elgin Trail runs north from Port Stanley along Kettle Creek toward London, with ravines and woodland sections for day hikes. Fanshawe Conservation Area adds a reservoir for fishing and paddling plus multi-use trails.
Families can round out a trip with the Elgin County Railway Museum in St. Thomas and the seasonal apple orchards and wineries scattered through the county.

The camping season in this part of Ontario runs roughly May through mid-October. Fanshawe Conservation Area operates from early May through mid-October, and most private RV parks in the area follow a similar seasonal window. Winter camping options are limited, and many resorts close entirely once temperatures drop.
Summer is peak season. July and August bring the warmest lake temperatures, the busiest beach days at Port Stanley, and the highest demand for campsites. Long weekends fill first, and Upper Thames River conservation areas typically require a multi-night minimum reservation that spans a Friday and Saturday or a Saturday and Sunday for Victoria Day, Canada Day, Civic Holiday, Labour Day, and Thanksgiving long weekends.
Spring and fall are quieter. Shoulder-season trips trade beach swimming for cooler hiking weather, fall colour along Kettle Creek, and easier last-minute site availability.

How to book a campsite in Central Elgin
Private resorts near Central Elgin take bookings directly through their own websites or by phone. Golden Pond RV Resort, Spring Lake RV Resort, Camper's Corner RV Campground, and Maple Grove Christian Retreat Centre all handle their own reservations, and some also list availability on third-party RV booking platforms. Seasonal sites are common at these parks, so the transient inventory can be limited on peak weekends.
For Fanshawe Conservation Area, reservations are handled through the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority. Bookings can be made online or by phone through the authority's reservation system, and changes or cancellations must go through the same channel, with a fee charged for each change. Book long weekends well in advance and confirm site type, hookup level, and rig-length limits before you arrive.
What to expect on arrival
Expect a mix of private RV resorts with full hookups and one large public conservation-area campground. Spring Lake RV Resort and Golden Pond RV Resort typically offer 30 and 50 amp electrical, water, pull-through sites for larger rigs, a dump station, tent sites, and amenities including playgrounds, shower and washroom buildings, laundry, and Wi-Fi. Golden Pond RV Resort also includes a swimming pool and recreation hall.
Fanshawe is different. Individual sites do not have direct sewer hookups; campers use the on-site dump station or portable holding services to transfer waste. Cell coverage is reliable across the area, roads are paved and easy to navigate, and most parks are pet-friendly with posted leash rules.

Good news: a regular Ontario Class G driver's license (or equivalent from your home province, state, or country) is all you need to rent an RV in Central Elgin. No commercial license, no air brake endorsement, and no RV-specific training is required for the motorhomes and trailers listed on RVezy. Approved drivers are generally 25 or older and must verify ID through the RVezy platform during booking, which takes just a few minutes. Visiting from overseas? Pick up an International Driving Permit from your local auto club before you fly in. Most first-time renters are amazed how simple the paperwork is.

Booking your Central Elgin RV trip is low-risk. Absolutely, and dogs love this stretch of Lake Erie. Many RVezy hosts offer pet-friendly RV rental in Central Elgin, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on the search page to see them instantly. Once you arrive, head to Little Beach in Port Stanley, which welcomes leashed dogs year-round, or drive 30 minutes east to Port Burwell Provincial Park, which has designated on-leash and off-leash dog beach areas. Pack a tie-out, a collapsible water bowl, and a towel for sandy paws. Message your host before booking if you have a large breed or more than one pup so everyone starts the trip on the same page.
ontarioparks.ca/park/portburwellCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Central Elgin?
Yes, RV delivery in Central Elgin is one of the most popular host add-ons, and it is a game-changer for first-time renters. Many hosts will tow or drive the RV directly to Port Stanley campgrounds, your cottage rental, or a private property in Belmont or Union, level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before they leave. Delivery fees are typically based on distance from the host's home base, often $2 to $4 per kilometre round trip. Use the Delivery filter when searching, then message the host with your campsite address to confirm the quote. It is the easiest way to enjoy your motorhome rental Central Elgin without ever getting behind the wheel of a big rig.
centralelgin.org/en/explore-and-play/tourism.aspxHow far can I drive on an RV road trip from Central Elgin?
Central Elgin sits in a sweet spot for a southern Ontario RV road trip. From Port Stanley you can reach Pinery Provincial Park on Lake Huron in about 1 hour 45 minutes (135 km), Niagara Falls in roughly 2.5 hours (220 km), Point Pelee National Park in around 2 hours (165 km), and Tobermory at the tip of the Bruce Peninsula in about 4.5 hours (375 km). Each host sets a daily kilometre allowance, often 150 to 200 km per day, with unlimited-mileage options available on some listings. If you are planning a longer loop, message the host upfront to negotiate a flat add-on rate, it is usually cheaper than per-kilometre overages.
pc.gc.ca/en/pn-np/on/pointpeleeWhere are the best campgrounds near Central Elgin for RV camping?
You are spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping in Central Elgin. Port Stanley's own town campground sits walking distance from Main Beach, while Port Burwell Provincial Park (40 minutes east) offers electrical sites, hot showers, and a beautiful sand beach. Wildwood Conservation Area near St. Marys (about an hour north) has lakeside RV sites with hookups, and John E. Pearce Provincial Park and the nearby private Iron Horse Estates round out the options for a quieter stay. For unserviced overflow nights, Sparta Country Candles offers Harvest Hosts stays. Reserve provincial park sites the moment the five-month booking window opens at 7 a.m. Eastern, summer weekends sell out within minutes.
ontarioparks.ca/park/portburwellWhen is the best time to visit Central Elgin in an RV?
Late June through early September is prime time for a Central Elgin RV trip, with daytime highs of 24 to 28 °C (75 to 82 °F) and warm Lake Erie water perfect for swimming at Port Stanley's Blue Flag Main Beach. May and September are the smart-money sweet spot: highs of 16 to 22 °C, cheaper nightly rates, and zero campsite competition. Fall foliage along the Lake Erie shoreline peaks in mid-October. Winters here are cold (often -5 to -10 °C with lake-effect snow), so most campgrounds close by Thanksgiving weekend and reopen in early May. Book your shoulder-season trip now and you will have the lighthouse boardwalk practically to yourself.
climate.weather.gc.ca/climate_normals/index_e.htmlI have never driven an RV before. Will I be okay in Central Elgin?
You are going to do great, especially here. First time renting an RV in Central Elgin is genuinely manageable because the roads through Port Stanley, Belmont, and Sparta are flat, low-traffic, and well-marked, very different from city driving. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup covering propane, slide-outs, dumping, leveling, and driving tips, and they stay reachable by phone throughout your trip. If you are still nervous, choose a Class B campervan or a smaller travel trailer under 24 feet, or simply book delivery so the RV is parked and ready when you arrive. A quick practice loop on Sunset Road before heading to your campsite builds instant confidence.
ontario.ca/page/driving-and-roadsWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV in Central Elgin?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance with the renter protection plan, so whether you have a flat tire on Highway 4, a dead battery at Pinafore Park, or a propane question at 11 p.m. in Port Burwell, one phone call dispatches help directly to your location. Your host is also typically a text away for quick troubleshooting on the appliances they know best, and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip through the app. Save the roadside number to your phone the day you book and snap a quick photo of the RV's VIN and plate at pickup. That is genuinely all the prep you need.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Central Elgin RV rental across the US border to Michigan or New York?
Cross-border trips from Central Elgin are possible on many listings, but never assumed. Some RVezy hosts allow travel into the US (the Blue Water Bridge to Port Huron, Michigan is just 90 minutes away, and Niagara Falls/Buffalo crossings are 2.5 hours), provided the RV's insurance extends to the US and the host approves in writing before you book. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental due to insurance restrictions. To confirm, message the host directly from the listing with your planned route and dates, then bring your passport, vehicle ownership documents, and host-signed travel authorization to the border. Customs officers will ask, and being prepared makes the crossing painless.
cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/travel-voyage/menu-eng.htmlWhat should I budget for fuel on an RV trip from Central Elgin?
Fuel is the easiest line item to plan for. Gas in Elgin County typically runs $1.45 to $1.65 per litre, and most Class C motorhomes get about 18 to 22 litres per 100 km, while travel trailers add roughly 30 percent to your tow vehicle's consumption. For a typical 4-night loop from Port Stanley to Pinery Provincial Park and back (around 350 km), expect to spend $90 to $130 on fuel. Fill up at the Pioneer or Esso stations in St. Thomas before heading out, prices are usually a few cents cheaper than at lakeshore towns. Driving 90 km/h instead of 110 km/h on Highway 401 can stretch your tank noticeably further.
www2.nrcan.gc.ca/eneene/sources/pripri/prices_bycity_e.cfmHow far in advance should I book a campground near Central Elgin?
For Ontario Parks like Port Burwell and Pinery, the reservation window opens exactly five months ahead at 7 a.m. Eastern through the Ontario Parks reservation system, and prime July and August weekends sell out within 10 minutes of opening. Book your RV rental in Central Elgin first, then immediately set a calendar alert for your campsite booking day. Private parks like Iron Horse Estates and municipal sites in Port Stanley are more forgiving, usually two to three months in advance is enough, but Civic Holiday weekend in August fills everywhere. Pro tip: if you miss the initial release, check back two weeks before your dates, cancellations open up daily.
ontarioparks.ca/reservationsWhat are driving conditions like around Central Elgin?
Driving an RV around Central Elgin is refreshingly low-stress. The terrain is gently rolling farmland, the main routes (Highway 4, Highway 3, and Sunset Road into Port Stanley) are wide and well-paved, and traffic is light outside summer weekends. Watch for the steep hill descending into Port Stanley village, downshift early and use engine braking, and be aware that the King George VI Lift Bridge has occasional openings for boat traffic in summer. Avoid narrow side roads near Sparta and Shedden in larger Class A motorhomes. Winter brings lake-effect snow squalls off Lake Erie from November through March, which is why most rentals here operate May through October.

centralelgin.org/en/explore-and-play/tourism.aspxHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and protected. When you book a family RV trip in Central Elgin through RVezy, you pay the full rental cost (plus your chosen protection plan, fees, and any add-ons) by credit card directly through the platform, never to the host in cash. A refundable security deposit is held separately a few days before pickup, typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV, and released after a clean return per RVezy's deposit process. To avoid any deductions, return the RV at the agreed fuel level, with tanks dumped if required, and free of excessive dirt or damage. Snap photos at pickup and dropoff, that simple habit protects everyone.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhere can I park an RV overnight in Central Elgin outside of campgrounds?
In Central Elgin, overnight RV parking outside campgrounds is limited but possible with planning. The municipality does not allow overnight parking at Port Stanley beach lots or on residential streets, and bylaw officers do enforce in summer. Your best legal options are Harvest Hosts and Boondockers Welcome properties (several wineries and farms in Elgin County participate), the Walmart in St. Thomas (call the store manager first, as policies change), and provincial rest areas along Highway 401 for short rests only. For true off-grid stays, book a private site through RVezy hosts who offer their own driveway. When in doubt, your host knows the local etiquette best, just ask.
