Campgrounds and RV parks near Elliot Lake, ON

Hiking is the headline activity. Mississagi Provincial Park has seven hiking trails covering roughly 60 kilometres, passing through hardwood forest and up to Canadian Shield lookouts over the Penokean Hills. The Helenbar Lookout Trail is a moderate route leading to a ridge with views over Helenbar Lake, then back toward Semiwite Lake. Paddlers can rent canoes at the park gatehouse and put in on Semiwite or Flack Lake. During spring and early summer the park is a premier destination for lake trout anglers, and campers also catch rainbow trout, lake whitefish, and brook trout. At Chutes, the Big Chute and Seven Sisters Rapids on the Aux Sable River are the focal points of the park, viewable from the campground and Twin Bridges hiking trail. A sandy river beach and short interpretive walks make it a good stop for families.

The camping season is short and clearly defined. Mississagi Provincial Park operates roughly from the May long weekend through early October, and Chutes Provincial Park typically runs from mid-May to mid-October. Private options such as Serpent River Campground operate on a similar May-to-October window. July and August are peak season, with the warmest, most stable weather and the highest booking demand. Blackflies and mosquitoes peak from late May into July and drop off by mid to late August. Spring brings wildflowers, songbirds, and strong fishing, summer offers warm and stable weather, and late September into early October is prime for fall colours. Shoulder seasons reward flexibility. Spring brings high water at the falls, and autumn brings cooler temperatures and fewer insects. During the off-season the provincial park gates are closed to vehicles, but visitors can walk in to see frozen waterfalls and use unmaintained routes for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and winter hiking.

Sites are forested and rustic by southern-Ontario standards. Mississagi Campground has 60 pet-friendly drive-in sites suited to RVs and tents, with none of the campsites equipped with electrical hookups and an RV length limit of about 32 feet. Water taps, vault toilets, a boat launch, and a park store cover the basics; there is no comfort station with showers or laundry, and cell coverage is limited. Chutes is more developed. The park has around 130 campsites, of which roughly 79 are serviced with electricity, spread across four loops in a mixed forest. A comfort station with flush toilets, showers, and laundry serves the campground, along with a 6 km hiking trail with views of waterfalls and the river gorge. Wildlife is part of the experience. Black bears, moose, and white-tailed deer are present throughout the region, so food storage, secured coolers, and clean sites matter. Bring bug protection through June, and expect gravel access roads once off the highway.
