Campgrounds and RV parks near Mattawa, ON

RV rental in Mattawa is one of the most affordable ways to explore northeastern Ontario. On RVezy, travel trailers typically start around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes generally run $200 to $300 per night, and larger Class A coaches or fifth wheels with more amenities can reach about $350 nightly during peak summer. For a cheap RV rental in Mattawa, consider a travel trailer paired with delivery to Sid Turcotte Park or Samuel de Champlain Provincial Park so you can skip towing altogether. Booking Sunday to Thursday in June or September often unlocks better weeknight rates outside the Mattawa Voyageur Days surge.

A regular Class G Ontario driver's licence (or the equivalent from your home province, state, or country) is all you need to rent an RV in Mattawa. No special RV licence, air-brake endorsement, or commercial licence is required for the motorhomes, campervans, and travel trailers listed on RVezy, since they fall under standard passenger-vehicle weight limits. Approved drivers must generally be 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID directly through the booking platform so there is no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from outside Canada? Bring your home licence along with an International Driving Permit and you are set to roll along Highway 17.

Every RV rental in Mattawa booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you are covered from the moment you pull out onto Highway 17. The protection plan helps cover damage to the RV and provides meaningful peace of mind on remote stretches like the drive to Samuel de Champlain Provincial Park. During checkout you choose between protection tiers (you select this, not the host), so you can scale coverage up for a lower deductible. This is not traditional auto insurance, but it is significant financial protection designed specifically for peer-to-peer RV rentals across Ontario.

Plans change, and RVezy is built to handle that. Every booking is covered by a standard RVezy cancellation policy, including a full money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in your Mattawa RV trip with confidence. Refund amounts after the grace period depend on how close you are to your trip start date. The policy is set by RVezy and is consistent across every listing, not chosen by individual hosts. You can review the exact cancellation details on your booking confirmation, or contact RVezy support for a clear breakdown before you commit.

Yes, Mattawa is excellent dog country, and finding a pet-friendly RV rental in Mattawa is easy. Toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see listings from hosts who welcome four-legged co-pilots. Once you arrive, Samuel de Champlain Provincial Park allows leashed pets on most campsites and has a designated pet beach area, and the Mattawa Island Conservation Area is a quick on-leash adventure right in town where your pup can sniff the meeting of the Mattawa and Ottawa Rivers. Many local private campgrounds also welcome leashed dogs, just confirm directly when booking your site. Pro tip: pack a tick remover, since blacklegged ticks are active in this region from spring through fall.

Yes, RV delivery in Mattawa is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if it is your first time renting an RV. Many local hosts will deliver and set up the motorhome or travel trailer directly at Sid Turcotte Park, Samuel de Champlain Provincial Park, or even a private cottage driveway. They will level it, hook up power and water, walk you through the systems, and leave you ready to enjoy the campfire. Filter for Delivery on RVezy to see hosts offering this service and the delivery fee, which usually scales with distance from the host's home base. It is a great option for families who would rather not tow.

Mattawa sits at the meeting of the Mattawa and Ottawa Rivers, putting some of Ontario and Quebec's best road trip destinations within easy reach. North Bay is about 60 km west on Highway 17 (roughly 45 minutes), Algonquin Provincial Park's east side is about 80 km south (around 1 hour), Ottawa is roughly 340 km east (about 4 hours), and Sudbury is about 185 km west (around 2.5 hours). Each host on RVezy sets their own mileage policy, with many offering generous daily allowances and some featuring unlimited mileage. Check the listing's mileage section before booking, and if you are planning an RV road trip from Mattawa to Algonquin or Ottawa, just message the host to confirm the route works.

The best campgrounds near Mattawa cover everything from full-service resorts to wild provincial-park beauty. Sid Turcotte Park, just minutes from downtown, is a family-run favourite with riverfront sites and big-rig access. Samuel de Champlain Provincial Park, about 15 km west on Highway 17, delivers stunning Mattawa River views, electrical sites, and access to the famous Etienne Trail system. Mattawa River Resort sits riverside with full hookups and canoe rentals nearby. For RV camping Mattawa-style at its quietest, book mid-week in June and you will often have entire loops nearly to yourself.

Mattawa shines from mid-May through mid-October. July and August are the warm, lively peak with daytime highs typically around 24 to 26°C and cool nights, while late September brings spectacular fall colour as the maples and birches around the Mattawa River Gorge turn red and gold, often with quieter campgrounds. June is wonderful for paddling, but pack bug spray since blackflies peak early in the month. Local insider tip: time your visit for the last full weekend of July and you can catch Mattawa Voyageur Days, a multi-day festival with live music at Explorer's Point that draws crowds from across the region.

Yes, Mattawa is a true winter playground, and a campervan rental Mattawa-style can be a memorable way to experience it. The region sits within OFSC snowmobile country with hundreds of kilometres of groomed trails, and Antoine Mountain Resort is just minutes south with some of the longest ski runs in the area. Winter temperatures regularly drop to -20°C or colder, so message hosts on RVezy about heated holding tanks, skirting, an onboard furnace, and shore power capability before you book, since many winter-ready rigs in this area come fully equipped. Pro tip: pair your stay with a visit to the Mattawa Museum in the warmer months, then return for ski weekends from December through March.

You will be just fine, first time renting an RV in Mattawa is honestly one of the friendlier places to start. Highway 17 through town is a wide, well-maintained Trans-Canada route, traffic is generally light outside Voyageur Days weekend, and most campgrounds are within a short drive. Every RVezy host gives a full pre-trip orientation walking you through driving, hookups, levelling, and waste systems before you leave the driveway. You can also message the host with questions before booking, and RVezy support is available to help. If you are nervous, choose a smaller Class C motorhome or travel trailer with delivery and setup included so the first time you drive it is just to a viewpoint, not into a campsite.

Help is one phone call away. Every motorhome rental Mattawa booking on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and breakdowns on Highway 17 or remote stretches near Samuel de Champlain Provincial Park are covered. Your host is also typically the first person to text for quick questions, like how to relight the water heater or reset the inverter, and most respond within minutes. RVezy support is available before, during, and after your trip for anything bigger. Pro tip: save the host's number and the roadside-assistance line in your phone before leaving, because cell service can be patchy east of Mattawa toward Deux-Rivières.

Quebec is right across the Ottawa River, and many Mattawa hosts allow cross-border travel into Quebec for trips through the Outaouais or up toward Témiscamingue, just confirm in writing on the RVezy message thread before booking. US travel is also possible with many hosts as long as the RV's insurance allows it, so message the host directly to confirm and have them update your trip details. One firm rule: travel to Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental, since the insurance and protection plan do not extend there. Popular cross-border ideas from Mattawa include Gatineau Park to the east and northern New York via the Ogdensburg-Prescott bridge.

Budgeting fuel for your Mattawa adventure is straightforward. Class B campervans typically get around 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes average 10 to 14 mpg, and big Class A coaches or fifth-wheel setups land around 8 to 10 mpg. Gas in northeastern Ontario tends to run slightly higher than the provincial average, so fill up in North Bay before heading east on Highway 17 because pumps get sparse between Mattawa and Deep River. For a typical 4-night, 500-km loop through the Algonquin area and back, plan around $150 to $250 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: download the GasBuddy app, since prices in North Bay can be several cents per litre cheaper than at smaller stations along the way.

For the best campgrounds near Mattawa, aim to book about 3 to 5 months ahead for July and August weekends, and even earlier if you want a riverside site at Samuel de Champlain Provincial Park. Ontario Parks opens reservations 5 months before your arrival date through the official reservations.ontarioparks.ca portal, and prime Mattawa River sites can disappear within hours of opening. Private parks like Sid Turcotte Park book directly through their own websites and tend to fill peak weekends by late spring. For September and October trips, you can often grab a site just a couple of weeks out. Local insider tip: weekday arrivals in late August get you shoulder-season pricing without sacrificing warm-water swimming.

Driving around Mattawa is generally relaxed and beginner-friendly. Highway 17 (the Trans-Canada) is the main route, two-lane and well-paved, with passing lanes spaced out for slower RVs. Watch for moose and deer at dawn and dusk, especially between Mattawa and Deux-Rivières where wildlife crossings are common in summer and fall. Winter brings snow, ice, and the occasional whiteout from late November through March, so winter tires are strongly recommended and required by many hosts during the snow season. The hills around Antoine Mountain are gentle by mountain standards but can be steep enough to downshift a Class C. Pro tip: check 511 Ontario before you roll out, and avoid driving at night when possible since wildlife activity peaks after sunset along Highway 17.

Campgrounds near Mattawa range from full-service resorts to rugged provincial-park sites, so you can pick your comfort level. Sid Turcotte Park provides serviced and unserviced sites, washrooms, a beach, and walking access to downtown restaurants. Samuel de Champlain Provincial Park offers electrical sites, comfort stations with flush toilets and hot showers, and a dump-and-fill station near the main gate, though no sewer hookups at individual sites. Private resorts in the area, like Mattawa River Resort, often offer full hookups including sewer. Pro tip: top off your fresh water tank before heading into Samuel de Champlain since the dump station is the main fill point inside the park.

Most RV rentals in Mattawa come ready for adventure right out of the gate. Expect a full kitchen (fridge, stove, sink, often a microwave), a bathroom with toilet and shower, comfortable sleeping for 2 to 8 depending on the rig, a propane furnace, air conditioning, and seatbelted travel seats for everyone on the road. Class C motorhomes and travel trailers typically include a dinette that converts to extra sleeping, while many campervans feature solar setups and built-in fridges great for boondocking on Crown land near Mattawa. TV, Wi-Fi hotspots, generators, outdoor BBQs, and bedding packages vary by host, so check the Amenities section on each RVezy listing. Pro tip: confirm whether sheets, towels, and kitchen kits are included or available as add-ons before pickup.

Hosts in the Mattawa area offer plenty of add-ons to customize your family RV trip Mattawa-style. Common options include delivery and setup, generator use, bedding and linen packages, camping chairs, BBQs, bike racks, kayaks or canoes (perfect for paddling the Mattawa River Gorge), and propane refills. Pickup is usually at the host's address with a 30 to 60 minute orientation, and dropoff is typically same-location unless you arrange a one-way trip in advance through the RVezy message thread. Mileage policies vary, with some hosts offering generous daily allowances and others featuring unlimited mileage. Review the Add-ons and Mileage sections on the listing carefully, since everything is itemized upfront before you book.

Payment is simple and secure: when you book your RV rental in Ontario through RVezy, you pay directly through the platform with a credit card, never in cash to the host. A security deposit is placed as a pre-authorization hold on your card before pickup, and the amount is shown clearly on the listing before you commit. As long as you return the RV on time, clean, undamaged, and with the agreed fuel and tank status, the hold is released after your trip ends. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos and a short walk-around video at both pickup and dropoff, it is the easiest way to protect your full deposit and avoid surprises after your Mattawa trip wraps up.
