Campgrounds near Montague
Montague is a rural township in eastern Ontario's Lanark County, sitting on the Rideau Canal Waterway between Smiths Falls and Merrickville. The area is a practical base for RV travellers exploring the Rideau Canal, a historic waterway linking the Ottawa River at Ottawa with Lake Ontario at Kingston that was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007. Ottawa sits about 45 minutes north, and Kingston roughly 90 minutes south.
Camping options mix Ontario Parks properties with private, hookup-focused resorts. Murphys Point Provincial Park is a 1,239-hectare park near Perth with hiking and skiing terrain and water access on Big Rideau Lake. Rideau River Provincial Park sits on the Rideau River south of Ottawa near Kemptville, with almost 200 campsites in mature forest and about one-quarter offering electrical service.
Private operators in the area include Victoria Park Campground on the canal in Smiths Falls, Waterways RV Resort on Big Rideau Lake near Portland, and Mal's Camping. Together they cover full-hookup RV needs, tent-friendly bush sites, and lakeside cottage rentals.
Things to do around Montague
Water access defines the region. Rideau River Provincial Park offers boating, canoeing, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding on the Rideau River, along with hiking, fishing for muskie and bass, swimming, and bird watching. A boat launch near the main beach handles both human-powered and motorized craft.
On land, Murphys Point Provincial Park includes five nature trails ranging from the 1-kilometre Loon Lake Trail to the 6.5-kilometre Rideau Trail. History-minded families can visit the restored Silver Queen mica mine, where guided tours run during the summer season and lantern-lit evening ghost walks are offered.
Downtown Smiths Falls, the Cataraqui Trail, and Rideau Canal lock stations round out easy day trips within a short drive of most campgrounds.

December - February
-4° / -13°C 70 mmDeep cold and snow; campgrounds closed, winter day use only
The main camping window runs from mid-May to mid-October. Rideau River Provincial Park operates from May through October, and Murphys Point Provincial Park is open from mid-May to mid-October for camping and again from December to March for winter day use. Most private parks in the area follow a similar schedule.
Summer is the busy season. Canada Day weekend and the August Civic Holiday weekend both fill early, and July and August draw the heaviest demand. Weekends book out first, and electrical loops go quickest. Shoulder seasons trade heat for quiet: May and September through October bring cooler temperatures, better site availability, and fewer bugs.
Bug pressure is a real planning factor. Black flies run from mid-spring through June, deer flies and horseflies appear in early summer, and mosquitoes are active from mid-spring through autumn frost, peaking in late spring. Ticks are present throughout the warm months, so tweezers and repellent are worth packing.

How to book
Ontario Parks handles reservations for both Murphys Point and Rideau River. The system opens bookings up to five months in advance of the arrival date, at 7:00 a.m. Eastern Time, through reservations.ontarioparks.ca or by phone at 1-888-668-7275. Summer weekend sites at Rideau River and the electric loops at Murphys Point typically go quickly once that window opens.
If a target date is sold out, cancellations do open up. Ontario Parks recommends using the Availability Notifications tool, which alerts campers when a matching site becomes available. Cancellations are common two weeks out and again in the 24 to 48 hours before arrival.
Private parks such as Waterways RV Resort, Victoria Park Campground, and Mal's Camping book directly through their own websites.
What to expect
Ontario Parks sites in this area are serviced but not full-hookup. Rideau River has almost 200 level campsites in a mature forest, with one-quarter offering electrical service and two barrier-free sites with electricity and water taps. Two comfort stations with showers are centrally located, and drinking water and vault toilets are spread throughout the campground. A dump station and laundry facilities are also on site.
Rig size matters. The West Campground has an RV length limit of about 25 feet, while the East Campground accommodates longer rigs. Larger trailers may find the electrical pull-through sites at Murphys Point more convenient.
Expect quiet nights, occasional black rat snake sightings on trails, and cell service that varies loop by loop.

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Montague, ON?
RV rental in Montague is one of the most affordable ways to experience Ontario's Rideau Canal corridor. Most rentals on RVezy in the Montague and Smiths Falls area run between $150 and $300 CAD per night, depending on the size and age of the rig. Compact campervans and smaller travel trailers sit at the lower end, while larger Class A motorhomes and family-friendly fifth wheels cost more. Many local hosts also include kitchen kits, camp chairs, and outdoor mats so you can skip the gear-shopping trip.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Montague,OntarioDo I need a special licence to rent an RV in Montague, Ontario?
Good news: a regular full Class G Ontario driver's licence is all you need for the vast majority of RVs you'll rent in Montague. That covers Class B campervans, Class C motorhomes, travel trailers, and fifth wheels under 11,000 kg, which is essentially every RV on the RVezy platform. Visiting from out of province or out of country? Your home licence is honoured under reciprocity, and international visitors should bring an International Driving Permit. To book on RVezy you must also meet approved driver requirements, which generally means being 25 or older. No air-brake endorsement, Class D, or special test is needed for a typical motorhome rental Ontario travellers use along the Rideau.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included when I rent an RV in Montague?
Every booking on RVezy comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance built right in, so you're covered from the moment you pick up the keys. The protection plan safeguards against most damages to the vehicle during your trip, giving you real financial peace of mind. You'll choose your coverage level during checkout (not the host), so you can match it to your trip and budget. Whether you're heading to Kilmarnock Lockstation for a weekend or doing a full Rideau Canal loop, you can drive off knowing the coverage is handled and your focus stays on the trip.

Booking an RV rental in Montague, ON is low-risk because RVezy (not the host) sets the cancellation policy, and there is a money-back grace period built in for plan changes shortly after booking. If weather, family plans, or a natural disaster impact your trip, the RVezy support team works with you on options based on how close you are to your start date. You won't see different cancellation rules listed on each Montague listing because the policy is consistent across the platform. Book early to lock in the best riverside rigs for the July long weekend, and reach out to RVezy support as soon as plans shift so we can help.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Montague RV trip?
Yes, pet-friendly RV rental in Montague is easy to find. Toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see hosts in the Smiths Falls, Merrickville, and broader Lanark County area who welcome dogs. Once you're on the road, the Rideau Canal corridor is great for pups: Lower Reach Park in Smiths Falls has waterfront walking paths, the Cataraqui Trail allows leashed dogs along its old rail bed, and Rideau River Provincial Park welcomes pets on most sites and trails. Message the host before booking to confirm pet fees and any size limits, then pack a leash, waste bags, and a water bowl for the locks.
ontarioparks.ca/park/rideauriverCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Montague?
Yes, RV delivery in Montague is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-time renters. Many local hosts will drive the RV directly to your campsite at Rideau River Provincial Park, Merrickville Lions Campground, or a Parks Canada lockstation like Kilmarnock, then level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before they leave. That means no white-knuckle driving on Highway 43 or Roger Stevens Drive for your first time behind the wheel. Use the Delivery filter when searching, and message the host to confirm the delivery fee, which is usually based on distance from their home base near Smiths Falls or Ottawa.
parks.canada.ca/lhn-nhs/on/rideau/activ/campingHow far can I travel on a Montague RV trip?
You can cover a lot of beautiful ground from Montague Township. Each host on RVezy sets their own mileage allowance, and many include 100 to 200 km per night with options to add unlimited mileage for longer trips. From Montague, Ottawa is about 50 km northeast (under an hour), Kingston sits about 110 km south, Algonquin Provincial Park is roughly 280 km northwest, and the Thousand Islands at Gananoque are about 100 km away. If you're planning a bigger RV road trip from Montague through Prince Edward County (around 220 km) or up to Quebec's Gatineau Park, message the host upfront to discuss a mileage package that fits.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Montague,OntarioWhere are the best campgrounds near Montague, ON?

reservations.ontarioparks.ca/When is the best time of year for an RV trip from Montague?
Late May through mid-October is prime time for RV camping in Montague, lining up with the Rideau Canal's navigation season from Victoria Day to Thanksgiving. July and August bring warm days, often in the mid-20s Celsius, perfect for swimming at Lower Beveridges Lock or Rideau River Provincial Park's beach. September is a local favourite: temperatures cool to a comfortable 15 to 22 C, bugs ease off, and the maples around Smiths Falls turn red and gold. Spring (May) sees temperatures from 10 to 20 C and quieter campgrounds. Winter rentals are limited since most campgrounds close, but a few hardy hosts offer cold-weather rigs for ice-fishing trips on the Rideau Lakes.
climate.weather.gc.ca/climate_normals/I've never driven an RV before. How does the pickup process work?
First time renting an RV? You're in great hands. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through how to operate the generator, slide-outs, propane stove, water pump, holding tanks, and dump valves. You can ask every question you have, and most hosts also send you home with a written cheat sheet and their cell number. For Montague-area trips, the roads are forgiving: Highway 43, County Road 15, and Roger Stevens Drive are wide, lightly trafficked, and easy to navigate compared to downtown Ottawa. Book a slightly smaller Class C or campervan for your first trip so parking at Merrickville's downtown shops feels easy.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You're never alone on the road. Every Montague RV rental booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering things like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing. Your host is also just a phone call or message away if you have a quick question about the awning or fridge. On top of that, RVezy's customer support team is available before, during, and after your trip. The closest service hubs around Montague are in Smiths Falls and Kemptville, both within about 20 minutes, with RV-friendly garages and parts. Save the roadside number in your phone before you leave the driveway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I drive my Montague rental into the United States?
Yes, cross-border RV travel from Montague to the United States is often allowed. You're only about 90 minutes from the Ogdensburg-Prescott International Bridge and roughly two hours from the Thousand Islands Bridge to New York State. Because insurance and protection coverage need to be confirmed for cross-border trips, message the host directly through the listing before booking to confirm US travel is approved on their RV. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental. Bring your passport, vehicle ownership and insurance documents from the host, and a printed copy of your RVezy booking to make the border crossing smooth.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat's the fuel budget for a Rideau Canal RV trip?
Plan for around 18 to 25 litres per 100 km for most motorhomes, and 14 to 18 litres per 100 km when towing a travel trailer with a pickup. Gas prices in the Smiths Falls and Kemptville area typically sit a few cents below Ottawa rates, so fill up locally before heading north. A long weekend RV camping Montague trip with 300 to 400 km of driving usually runs about $90 to $140 CAD in fuel. The Pioneer station on Highway 15 in Smiths Falls and the Costco gas bar in Kanata (about 40 minutes north) are some of the cheapest fill-ups in the region.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Montague,OntarioHow far ahead should I book a campground near Montague?
For summer weekends, reserve as early as you can. Ontario Parks opens reservations five months ahead through the Ontario Parks reservation system, and Rideau River Provincial Park's electrical sites sell out fast for July and August Saturdays. Parks Canada lockstation campsites at Kilmarnock, Merrickville, and Lower Beveridges are bookable through the Parks Canada Reservation Service and also fill quickly. For shoulder season trips in late May, June, and September, you can often book two to three weeks out. Aim for a Sunday-to-Thursday stay near Montague, ON to score lockstation sites with almost no competition and quieter waterfront views.
reservations.ontarioparks.ca/What are local driving conditions like around Montague?
Driving conditions around Montague Township are some of the friendliest in Ontario for an RV. Highway 43, Highway 15, and Roger Stevens Drive are flat, paved, two-lane country roads with wide shoulders and light traffic, which makes them great for a first campervan rental Montague experience. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk on rural stretches between Smiths Falls and Merrickville, and slow down through small villages. The trickiest spot is downtown Merrickville's narrow heritage streets: easy in a Class B but tight for a 30-foot Class A, so park at the Lions Campground lot and walk in.
ontario.ca/page/road-conditionsWhat amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Montague?
You'll find a great mix of options for RV camping Montague trips. Rideau River Provincial Park offers electrical hookups (15/30 amp), flush toilets, hot showers, potable water fill stations, and a sani-dump. Parks Canada lockstation sites at Kilmarnock and Merrickville are simpler: washrooms, picnic tables, fire rings, and firewood for sale, with potable water available but no electrical hookups (great for self-contained rigs). Private parks like Merrickville Lions Campground offer hookups and Wi-Fi. Need to dump tanks or refill water mid-trip? Rideau River Provincial Park offers a dump station within about 25 minutes of Montague.
ontarioparks.ca/park/rideauriverWhat's typically included inside a Montague RV rental?
You'll be impressed by how turnkey most RV rentals in Montague, ON really are. Expect a queen or king bed, bunks or convertible dinettes for the kids, a full kitchen with fridge, propane stove, microwave, sink and cookware, a bathroom with shower and toilet, furnace, air conditioning, and seatbelts for every traveller. Many rigs include a generator, an awning, a TV, and host-provided Wi-Fi hotspots, plus levelling blocks and sewer hoses. Class B campervans are more compact but pack the same essentials cleverly. Use the Sleeps filter on RVezy to match seat and bed counts to your group, and message the host to confirm specific extras like a BBQ or kayak rack.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Montague,OntarioWhat popular add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Local hosts in the Montague and Smiths Falls area offer add-ons to make your trip easier. Popular options include bike racks, kayak or canoe rentals for paddling the Rideau Canal, BBQ kits, bedding and linen packages, generators for off-grid stays at lockstations, and starter propane fills. Pickup is typically self-serve at the host's driveway, usually in or near Smiths Falls, Kemptville, or Merrickville, with delivery available for an extra fee. Mileage allowances are set by the host (commonly 100 to 200 km per night), and some Montague hosts offer unlimited mileage for trips heading to Algonquin or Prince Edward County. Always confirm pickup and drop-off times in your messages.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Montague,OntarioHow do payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay the booking total through RVezy using a credit card, which keeps everything in one trusted place. The host also sets a security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 CAD depending on the rig), which is held as a pre-authorization separate from your booking payment and released after your trip if there is no damage and no excess mileage. To keep things smooth, do a thorough walk-around photo session at pickup and drop-off with your host, respect the mileage and generator-hour limits, and return the RV with the same fuel and propane levels noted on your departure checklist.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best road trip destinations to drive to from Montague?
An RV road trip from Montague opens up some of Eastern Ontario's best scenery. Top routes include Ottawa and Gatineau Park (about 50 km, 1 hour) for ByWard Market and fall colours; Kingston and the Thousand Islands (about 110 km, 1.5 hours) for boat tours and Fort Henry; Prince Edward County (about 220 km, 2.5 hours) for Sandbanks Provincial Park's dunes and wineries; Algonquin Provincial Park (about 280 km, 3.5 hours) for moose-spotting and canoe routes; and Mont-Tremblant, Quebec (about 270 km, 3 hours) for mountain hikes.
