South Algonquin camping overview
South Algonquin is a township in Ontario's Nipissing District that borders the southeast corner of Algonquin Provincial Park. It sits along Highway 60, the main east-west corridor through the park, with Whitney serving as the primary service village for gas, groceries, and last-mile supplies before heading into the backcountry.
The area gives RV renters access to both provincial park campgrounds and private operators. Rock Lake - Algonquin Provincial Park and Coon Lake - Algonquin Provincial Park sit inside the park boundary on the Highway 60 corridor, while Lake St Peter Provincial Park lies just south of the park in Hastings County. Private options include Riverland Camp And Outfitters and Red Deer Log Cabins and Campground.
Most trip planning centres on Algonquin Park itself, over seven thousand square kilometres of lakes, hardwood ridges, and canoe routes. Provincial park campgrounds are booked through Ontario Parks, and private sites are booked directly with the operator.
Things to do near South Algonquin
Paddling is the signature activity. Rock Lake - Algonquin Provincial Park serves as both a car-camping base and an access point for backcountry canoe trips, with a launch on the water between Whitefish and Rock Lakes. Coon Lake - Algonquin Provincial Park offers a quieter waterfront and connects to the same network of interior routes.
Hiking near the Rock Lake area includes Booth's Rock Trail, one of the most-hiked lookouts on the Highway 60 corridor, and the level Old Railway Bike Trail, which runs roughly 16 kilometres between Rock Lake and Mew Lake and works for family cycling.
South of the park, Lake St Peter Provincial Park has two sandy beaches, a boat launch, and the Lookout and Cabin trails through mixed forest. Fishing for smallmouth bass and lake trout is common on area lakes.

The main camping season runs from mid-May through mid-October. Rock Lake Campground typically opens in mid-May and closes in October, and Lake St Peter operates on a similar spring-to-fall calendar. Outside that window, most drive-in campgrounds are closed and services in Whitney shrink to a handful of year-round businesses.
June brings blackflies and mosquitoes, particularly in the first two weeks after ice-out. July and August are the busiest months, with warm lake temperatures, dependable swimming, and the highest booking pressure across all Algonquin campgrounds. Weekends in this window fill months in advance.
Late September into the first week of October is fall-colour peak, when Highway 60 traffic spikes for leaf-peepers and provincial park day-use lots reach capacity by late morning. Nights are cold by then, and RV renters should confirm their unit has a working furnace. Winter access is limited to snowmobile trails and a small set of park-run winter activities based out of Mew Lake.

My husband and I camp in Algonquin every October, but this was our first time in a trailer (or renting one) and we are so pleased we made the perfect choice! It is super clean, well setup, well stocked and for us given the weather…incredibly warm! We were grateful for the scheduling help and fitting us in, delivering to our camp site, setting up in the pouring rain, making sure we knew and had all we needed, letting us bring our furry sidekick who camped for his first time …I could go on, but grateful for all of it! We are already looking at calendars for next year to see how we can do it again! Thank you both…what a wonderful time! See you soon :)

We had a wonderful experience renting from Tom! As first-time RV campers, we really appreciated how friendly, helpful and patient he was. He took the time to walk us through all the features of the trailer and explain everything in detail, making our first RV camping experience much easier and more enjoyable. Thank you to Tom for making our family's first experience such a positive one!

How to book campgrounds near South Algonquin
Rock Lake, Coon Lake, and Lake St Peter are booked through the Ontario Parks reservation system at reservations.ontarioparks.com or by phone at 1-888-ONT-PARK. Bookings open at 7:00 a.m. Eastern Time, up to five months in advance of the arrival date, and popular summer weekends are typically claimed within minutes of the window opening.
Algonquin uses a paperless permit system, so register licence plates and camper names online before arrival to skip the check-in line. Ontario Parks also offers availability notifications for sites that free up through cancellations.
Private operators such as Riverland Camp And Outfitters and Red Deer Log Cabins and Campground are booked directly with the property by phone or website. Confirm site length, hookup type, and pull-through availability before locking in a reservation with a rental RV.
What to expect at South Algonquin campgrounds
Provincial park sites in this area range from basic to electrical, with a mix of drive-in and waterfront layouts. Rock Lake Campground has 121 sites split across two areas, with more than half offering electrical hookups, flush toilets, showers, laundry, and a trailer sanitation station. Lake St Peter offers 65 sites, showers, and a dump station, with several electrical and waterfront sites suited to larger trailers.
Cell service is patchy to non-existent inside Algonquin Park. Download maps and reservation confirmations before leaving Whitney. The Rock Lake Road is gravel and about 8 kilometres long, which is manageable in a rental RV but slow.
Bears are active across the region. Store food in the RV, not in tents or at picnic tables. Firewood must be bought locally, since importing wood from outside the park is not allowed.
