Campgrounds and RV parks near South Algonquin, ON

Paddling is the signature activity. Rock Lake - Algonquin Provincial Park serves as both a car-camping base and an access point for backcountry canoe trips, with a launch on the water between Whitefish and Rock Lakes. Coon Lake - Algonquin Provincial Park offers a quieter waterfront and connects to the same network of interior routes. Hiking near the Rock Lake area includes Booth's Rock Trail, one of the most-hiked lookouts on the Highway 60 corridor, and the level Old Railway Bike Trail, which runs roughly 16 kilometres between Rock Lake and Mew Lake and works for family cycling. South of the park, Lake St Peter Provincial Park has two sandy beaches, a boat launch, and the Lookout and Cabin trails through mixed forest. Fishing for smallmouth bass and lake trout is common on area lakes.

The main camping season runs from mid-May through mid-October. Rock Lake Campground typically opens in mid-May and closes in October, and Lake St Peter operates on a similar spring-to-fall calendar. Outside that window, most drive-in campgrounds are closed and services in Whitney shrink to a handful of year-round businesses. June brings blackflies and mosquitoes, particularly in the first two weeks after ice-out. July and August are the busiest months, with warm lake temperatures, dependable swimming, and the highest booking pressure across all Algonquin campgrounds. Weekends in this window fill months in advance. Late September into the first week of October is fall-colour peak, when Highway 60 traffic spikes for leaf-peepers and provincial park day-use lots reach capacity by late morning. Nights are cold by then, and RV renters should confirm their unit has a working furnace. Winter access is limited to snowmobile trails and a small set of park-run winter activities based out of Mew Lake.

Provincial park sites in this area range from basic to electrical, with a mix of drive-in and waterfront layouts. Rock Lake Campground has 121 sites split across two areas, with more than half offering electrical hookups, flush toilets, showers, laundry, and a trailer sanitation station. Lake St Peter offers 65 sites, showers, and a dump station, with several electrical and waterfront sites suited to larger trailers. Cell service is patchy to non-existent inside Algonquin Park. Bears are active across the region. Store food in the RV, not in tents or at picnic tables. Firewood must be bought locally, since importing wood from outside the park is not allowed.
