Campgrounds and RV parks near Thessalon, ON

Water is the main draw. RV renters use Thessalon as a base for freshwater fishing on Lake Huron's North Channel and on inland lakes for walleye, pike, bass, and lake trout. Kayaks and canoes launch easily from the municipal marina and from small rivers feeding the North Channel. On land, the Stewart Highlands trail network north of Highway 17 offers hiking in summer and groomed classic ski and snowshoe routes in winter. Day trips reach Chutes Provincial Park in Massey for waterfall hiking, the Mississagi River corridor via Highway 129, and St. Joseph Island via the bridge west of town for cycling and farm stops.

The camping season in the Thessalon area runs from late May through early October, matching the standard Northern Ontario window. Most private parks open around the Victoria Day long weekend in late May and close after Thanksgiving in October. The town's own Lakeside Park Campground, for example, is open annually from the Friday of Victoria Day Weekend to Thanksgiving Monday, and neighbouring private parks follow a similar schedule. July and August are peak season. Weekends around Canada Day, the August civic long weekend, and Labour Day sell out earliest, and blackfly and mosquito pressure eases noticeably by early July. Late spring brings the strongest bug activity but the quietest sites. Shoulder months of late May, September, and early October offer cooler nights, fall colour along the Mississagi and North Channel, and productive fishing, but overnight temperatures can drop near freezing, so RV renters should confirm furnace and water-line function before booking.

Expect small, family-run parks rather than resort-style operations. Sites are usually a mix of full-hookup pull-throughs, back-in water-and-electric sites, and unserviced tent pads. Cell coverage is reliable in town along Highway 17 but drops off on side roads and inland lakes, so download maps before leaving pavement. Roads into the campgrounds are mostly paved or hard-packed gravel and are manageable for Class C and travel-trailer rigs. Larger Class A coaches should call ahead to confirm site length and turning access, particularly at wooded inland parks. Bring bug protection through June, a valid Ontario fishing licence for anyone required to hold one, bear-aware food storage, and cash for bait, ice, and firewood at rural outlets. Grocery restocks are easiest in Thessalon itself or in Blind River to the east.
