Camping near Berry, Quebec
Berry is a small municipality in the Abitibi Regional County Municipality in western Quebec's Abitibi-Témiscamingue region. The area sits on the boreal clay belt, surrounded by lakes, mixed forest, and several protected areas including the Dunes-de-Berry, Kettles-de-Berry, and William-Baldwin ecological reserves. RV travellers typically base themselves at provincial park campgrounds in the broader region rather than inside Berry itself, since the municipality is rural and lightly populated.
The closest organized campground is Lac Matissard - Aiguebelle Provincial Park, located in the southern sector of Parc national d'Aiguebelle, about 50 km northeast of Rouyn-Noranda and reachable from Berry by paved highway. The park covers 268.3 square kilometres of Abitibi hills, ancient volcanic terrain, and lakes set along faults. It is managed by Sépaq, Quebec's provincial parks agency, which also handles all reservations. The combination of a working provincial park and quiet rural surroundings makes the Berry area a practical staging point for an Abitibi RV trip.
Things to do near Berry
Outdoor activities dominate. Inside Parc national d'Aiguebelle, visitors can hike the Abijévis hills and cross a 64-metre suspension footbridge perched 22 metres above Lac La Haie, climb a fire warden's tower, and descend a cliffside spiral staircase. The park protects rocks dated to about 2.7 billion years and features a visible fault line, glacial erratics, and pillow lava formations. At Lac Matissard - Aiguebelle Provincial Park, the Abijévis campground offers a supervised sandy beach, a children's playground, paddle surfing on Matissard and Loïs lakes, canoe and pedal-pontoon rentals, a convenience store, and ranger-led discovery activities. Wildlife viewing for moose, black bear, beaver, river otter, and waterfowl is common, especially at dawn and dusk. Within Berry itself, the ecological reserves protect glacial dune and kettle landforms but are not developed for tourism.

The Abitibi region has a humid continental climate with long, frigid winters and short, warm summers. The main RV camping window at Lac Matissard - Aiguebelle Provincial Park runs from mid-May to mid-October, when the serviced Abijévis campground on Lac Matissard is open. July and August are peak season, with daytime highs typically in the low twenties Celsius, the warmest lake temperatures for swimming, and the highest demand for serviced sites. June brings long daylight hours and fewer crowds, but also peak blackfly and mosquito activity in the boreal forest. September delivers cool nights and fall colour through the mixed boreal forest, and it is also the wettest month of the year in this region, averaging around 105 mm of precipitation. Outside the summer season, the park's south entrance at Mont-Brun stays open year-round for winter activities such as snowshoeing and backcountry skiing, but RV camping is not available and overnight visitors switch to four-season cabins.
How to book a campsite
All campsites, ready-to-camp units, and cabins inside Parc national d'Aiguebelle, including Lac Matissard - Aiguebelle Provincial Park, are reserved through Sépaq, which runs Quebec's network of provincial parks. Bookings are made online at the Sépaq website or by phone, and a daily park access permit is required in addition to the campsite reservation. Backcountry sites also require an access permit. Sépaq opens reservations well in advance of each season, and serviced sites with water and electricity, along with ready-to-camp units, fill earliest for July and August weekends. Travellers planning a Berry-area trip should book as soon as the reservation window opens, confirm rig length and service type, and review Sépaq's cancellation and check-in terms before arrival.
What to expect
Expect a quiet, boreal-forest setting rather than a resort atmosphere. The Abijévis campground at Lac Matissard - Aiguebelle Provincial Park offers about 91 sites in total, including unserviced, one-service (electricity), and two-service (water and electricity) pitches with pull-through options, plus ready-to-camp units and cabins. On-site amenities include showers, washrooms, potable water, a waste-water dump station, a supervised beach, firewood sales, a convenience store, laundry, canoe and pedal-pontoon rental, a children's playground, and ranger discovery programs. Dogs are not permitted at the Abijévis campground. Cell coverage is limited in the park interior, and the nearest full-service town for groceries, fuel, and propane is Rouyn-Noranda, about 50 km away by paved road via Mont-Brun. Bring bug protection in June and early July, layers for cool nights even in summer, and bear-aware food storage practices.
