Lake Timiskaming is the centre of activity. The lake supports fishing, boating, kayaking and canoeing, and the public beach in the village gives RV families an easy swim stop. The lake is known for unpredictable winds and can become rough quickly, so paddlers are advised to hug the shoreline. The Lake Timiskaming Fossil Centre in the village covers regional paleontology. South of town, Parc national d'Opémican offers hiking trails through tall pine and mixed forest, including the short Piers loop with a high view over the historic Opémican timber depot, plus canoe and kayak access to Lac Témiscamingue and Lac Kipawa. Crossing into Ontario via rue Ontario opens up trails, marinas and shops around Temiskaming Shores.

The region has a humid continental climate with four sharply defined seasons. The practical RV season runs from late May through September, with July and August the busiest stretch because of warm lake temperatures and school holidays. June can bring heavy black-fly and mosquito pressure in the surrounding forest, something travellers visiting Parc national d'Opémican in June and early July should plan for with repellent and screened shelters. September and early October bring cooler nights, fewer bugs and fall colour through the white and red pine forests that dominate the Témiscamingue landscape, but many small private campgrounds begin closing after Labour Day. The Rivière-Kipawa sector of Parc national d'Opémican typically runs from mid-June to mid-October, while the Pointe-Opémican sector has been closed for major work and visitors should check Sépaq before planning a trip. Winter is long and cold, with snow cover from roughly December through March; most private campgrounds shut down, though the area remains active for snowmobiling, ice fishing and cross-country skiing. Spring thaw is muddy and roads can be soft, so early-May trips warrant a call ahead.

Expect a small-town, lake-country feel rather than a resort scene. Notre-Dame-du-Nord recorded a population of about 1,090 in the 2021 census, with a grocery store, gas, restaurants and a convenience store in the village core, plus larger services across the border in Temiskaming Shores. Campgrounds in the immediate area tend to be compact waterfront properties, and full hookups are not guaranteed at every site, so confirm power amperage, water and sewer when booking a larger RV. Cell coverage is reliable in town but drops off on backcountry trails and along parts of the lakeshore. Roads in are paved and RV-friendly, with Route 101 the main artery. Bring bug protection in early summer, layers for cool nights even in July, and a backup plan for windy days on the lake.
