Campgrounds near Aliso Viejo
Aliso Viejo sits in south Orange County, within a short drive of several Pacific coast campgrounds well suited to RV travel. The closest options run along Pacific Coast Highway and Interstate 5 between Corona del Mar and San Clemente, giving renters a mix of state-park beach campgrounds and one full-service private resort.
Crystal Cove State Park's Moro Campground sits on a coastal bluff between Corona del Mar and Laguna Beach, with hookup RV sites and non-hookup sites for tents and van conversions, plus primitive hike-in campsites spread across three designated areas: Lower Moro, Upper Moro, and Deer Canyon. Doheny State Beach is located at the southern end of Dana Point Harbor in Orange County and became California's first state beach in 1931, with sites split between a North Loop and South Loop and premium beachfront sites positioned close to the Pacific Ocean. Newport Dunes Resort, on Newport Beach's Back Bay, is a full-hookup waterfront RV resort with a marina, pools, and a lagoon beach. San Clemente State Beach offers bluff-top RV hookup sites and a separate tent loop with ocean views. San Mateo, part of San Onofre State Beach, sits inland near Trestles with a nature trail down to the surf.
Things to do in Aliso Viejo
The coast is the main draw. Crystal Cove State Park features miles of beach, 2,400 undeveloped acres of backcountry, and over 15 total miles of trails open to swimming, surfing, tidepooling, mountain biking, and hiking on the Moro Canyon trails. Doheny State Beach is a longtime surf spot with a visitor center and aquarium, a paved multi-use trail for walking and biking, and beachside dining. Newport Dunes Resort adds a swimming lagoon, kayak and paddleboard rentals, a boat ramp into Newport Harbor, and family programming such as movie nights on the beach. From San Mateo, a 1.5-mile Nature Trail connects the campground to Trestles Beach, a world class surfing site. San Clemente State Beach has bluff-top picnic areas and access trails down to the sand.

The Aliso Viejo coast is a year-round destination, but conditions and crowds vary by season. Summer brings the warmest beach weather and the heaviest demand: June through August at Doheny is when balmy temperatures align with peak beach days, with crowds especially on weekends, so an early arrival helps with parking. Spring and fall are quieter shoulder seasons with mild temperatures and reduced bookings. Coastal mornings often start under marine layer fog, especially in late spring and early summer, clearing by midday.
Aliso Viejo usually has the most precipitation in January, February and December, and occasional Pacific storms can bring closures or muddy trails. Wildfire risk in Orange County is highest from late summer through fall, particularly during Santa Ana wind events that can prompt red flag warnings and fire restrictions in nearby canyons. Camping at San Mateo is available year-round, and Doheny, San Clemente, and Crystal Cove also operate through all four seasons.

How to book campgrounds near Aliso Viejo
Crystal Cove State Park, Doheny State Beach, San Clemente State Beach, and San Mateo at San Onofre State Beach are all reserved through ReserveCalifornia.com online or by phone at 1-800-444-PARK (7275). The standard window allows reservations six months to the day in advance of the arrival date, and each new date opens at 8 a.m. PST, and beachfront and hookup sites typically fill the moment the window opens, especially for summer weekends and holidays. Effective July 1, the reservation booking window for the Doheny State Beach campground has been temporarily reduced from 6 months to 3 months in anticipation of a future campground closure anticipated sometime between 2027 and 2029 for essential construction and upgrades. Newport Dunes Resort books directly through the resort rather than ReserveCalifornia, with waterfront sites filling earliest. Check site length limits at each park before booking, since RV pad lengths vary site by site.
What to expect at campgrounds near Aliso Viejo
The closest campgrounds are coastal and family-oriented, but amenities differ. At Crystal Cove's Moro Campground, RVs are measured upon entry, with length limits set at 38 feet for hookup sites and 25 feet for non-hookup tent sites. Doheny is a dry campground with no electrical, water or sewage hookups, and the park provides hot showers, restrooms, and a dump station. San Clemente State Beach has RV sites with hookups plus a separate tent loop. At San Mateo, campsites 1 through 67 offer electrical and water hookups, and a 1.5-mile Nature Trail connects the campground to Trestles Beach, with hot, coin-operated indoor showers, and flush toilets on site. Newport Dunes Resort offers full hookups including 30- and 50-amp service, cable, and Wi-Fi, but sites sit close together. Cell service is generally good along the coast.
