Campgrounds near Ballard, California
Ballard is a small unincorporated community in the Santa Ynez Valley of Santa Barbara County, surrounded by vineyards, oak hills, and ranch country. It is the smallest and oldest community in the Santa Ynez Valley, with a population of 768 at the 2020 census, and sits within easy reach of both wine-country campgrounds and the Gaviota Coast state beaches on the Pacific.
RV travelers typically split their stay between two zones. Inland, Flying Flags RV Resort & Campground in nearby Buellton offers full-hookup sites and cabins a short drive from Ballard, Los Olivos, and Solvang. Toward the coast, three California State Parks line Highway 101 within roughly thirty miles: Refugio State Beach offers 67 standard campsites, 3 group sites, and Hike and Bike camping, El Capitan State Beach sits about a few miles east, and Gaviota State Park anchors the western end of the coast. Ocean Mesa RV Resort, located on the bluff above El Capitan, provides full hookups and views of the Channel Islands. None of the three state parks have RV hookups, so travelers needing power and water generally choose Flying Flags or Ocean Mesa.
Things to do near Ballard
The valley is built for slow days: tasting rooms, ranch drives, and short hikes. Walk the streets of Ballard to see well-preserved historic homes and the 1883 Ballard School and the Santa Ynez Valley Presbyterian Church, erected in 1889. Solvang, Los Olivos, and Santa Ynez sit minutes away for bakeries, wineries, and family attractions like OstrichLand USA.
At the coast, the Gaviota state parks offer swimming, tidepooling, surfing, and kayaking. The Aniso Trail connects Refugio and El Capitan beaches, making it easy to bike or walk between the two parks. Gaviota State Park adds backcountry trails, hot springs, and a fishing pier. Inland, Los Padres National Forest provides hiking and mountain biking in the Figueroa Mountain area.

Summer is peak season on the Gaviota Coast. State park beach campgrounds book to capacity on weekends, and morning fog from the marine layer is common before clearing by afternoon. Inland Ballard and Buellton run noticeably warmer than the coast, with dry, sunny days through August.
Spring brings green hills and wildflowers across the valley, typically lasting from March into May. Wind picks up in April and May, especially along the coast.
Fall is one of the easier times to find a site. Weekday availability improves as crowds thin after Labor Day, and days stay warm into October.
Winter is the wet season. Most rainfall arrives between December and March, and the Gaviota state parks shift to limited access. From December 1st to March 31st, regular campsites at Refugio are available on a walk-in basis only and group camps are available by Special Event permit only, so winter coastal trips require flexibility.

How to book campgrounds near Ballard
Reservation rules vary by operator. The three nearby state parks, Refugio State Beach, El Capitan State Beach, and Gaviota State Park, all book through ReserveCalifornia. From April 1st to November 30th, reservations can be made through ReserveCalifornia.com or by calling 1-800-444-7275, day-of or in advance up to six months to the day of the arrival date. The window is rolling, with each new date opening at 8 a.m. PST. Summer weekends and beachfront sites often sell out within minutes of release, so log in before the window opens.
Private parks use their own systems. Flying Flags RV Resort & Campground and Ocean Mesa RV Resort accept direct online bookings well beyond six months out, which is useful for holiday weekends and harvest season.
What to expect on arrival
Plan for two distinct camping experiences. The state beaches, Refugio, El Capitan, and Gaviota, are no-hookup parks with flush toilets, showers, and fire rings. Campsites at Refugio are big enough for motorhomes up to 30 feet long, so larger rigs should confirm site length on the reservation map before booking.
Flying Flags and Ocean Mesa are full-service resorts with hookups, pools, laundry, and on-site stores. Check-in at the state parks is 2:00 PM and check-out is 12:00 PM. Cell service is generally good in Ballard and Buellton but spotty in the coastal canyons and at Gaviota. Pack layers: coastal evenings cool quickly even after hot inland afternoons.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Ballard, CA
How much does an RV rental in Ballard, CA typically cost?
Good news: an RV rental in Ballard is one of the most flexible ways to experience Santa Ynez Valley wine country without paying boutique hotel prices. On RVezy, you'll generally see campervans starting around $100 to $175 per night, Class C motorhomes ranging from $175 to $300 per night, and larger Class A and fifth-wheel rigs from $250 to $450 per night. Weekends and harvest season (September through October) command higher rates, so booking midweek or in late winter is the smart-money move. Pro tip: many Ballard-area hosts offer weekly discounts of 10 to 20 percent, and filtering for cheap RV rental Ballard options plus mid-size travel trailers usually gets you the best value per square foot.
visitsyv.com/local-santa-ynez-valley-resources/camping-rv/Do I need a special license to rent an RV in Ballard, CA?
Great news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Ballard for the vast majority of trips. The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) only requires a non-commercial Class B license if your motorhome is over 40 feet long or weighs more than 26,000 pounds, which is well above the size of nearly every Class B campervan, Class C motorhome, and travel trailer on RVezy. You must be 25 or older to rent, and RVezy verifies your ID through the platform during booking. Visiting from abroad? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country's auto association before you fly, pair it with your home license, and you're set to enjoy the Santa Ynez Valley.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/recreational-vehicles-and-trailers-handbook-2011/license-classes-and-requirements/Is my RV rental in Ballard protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, every booking on RVezy comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance included, so you can rent an RV in Ballard with real peace of mind. You choose your level of coverage during checkout, and the plan provides meaningful financial protection for covered damage during your trip, whether it's a fender bender on Highway 154 or a mishap at the campsite. Roadside assistance is included with the protection plan and can help with flat tires, lockouts, and towing. Pro tip: review the coverage tiers at checkout and pick the level that matches your comfort, especially if it's your first time driving a larger motorhome in the Santa Ynez Valley.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is RVezy's cancellation policy for a Ballard RV rental?
Booking is low risk. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (it is not chosen by individual hosts), and there is a money-back grace period after you book so you can lock in your dates with confidence. Refunds after the grace period depend on how far in advance you cancel, and the full policy is shown on the RVezy website before you confirm payment. If a host ever cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or provides travel credit so your Santa Ynez Valley trip stays on track. Pro tip: if you are eyeing a harvest weekend near Ballard, book early, you can always adjust within the grace window, and RVezy support is available before, during, and after your trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV rental in Ballard?
Absolutely, a pet-friendly RV rental in Ballard is easy to find on RVezy. Filter for Pet-Friendly on the search page and message the host to confirm any pet fee or specifics. The Santa Ynez Valley is dog-welcoming: Cachuma Lake Recreation Area allows leashed dogs in campsites, many Los Olivos and Solvang tasting room patios welcome well-behaved pups, and the quiet country lanes around Ballard are great for morning walks. Pro tip: pack a collapsible water bowl, summer afternoons regularly reach the mid-80s and pavement gets hot, so plan walks for early morning or after sunset.
countyofsb.org/637/Cachuma-Lake-Recreation-Area/Can the RV be delivered to my campsite in Ballard?
Yes, RV delivery in Ballard is one of the best-kept secrets of the platform, and it's a game-changer if it's your first time renting an RV. Many hosts will drive the RV to your campsite at Cachuma Lake, Flying Flags RV Resort in nearby Buellton, or even a private property in the Santa Ynez Valley, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. Filter for Delivery on RVezy to see hosts offering this service. Pro tip: delivery fees are typically calculated by distance, so picking a campground within 20 to 30 miles of Ballard (like Cachuma Lake on Highway 154) keeps the cost reasonable and lets you skip the stress of driving a big rig.
countyofsb.itinio.com/cachuma-lake/campsitesHow far can I drive on an RV rental from Ballard?
You have plenty of range for an epic Ballard RV trip. Each host sets a mileage policy, with daily allowances commonly between 100 and 250 miles, and many listings on RVezy offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, ideal for longer road trips. From Ballard, popular drives include Santa Barbara (about 35 miles south via Highway 154), Pismo Beach (about 55 miles north on Highway 101), Big Sur (around 200 miles up the coast), Los Angeles (about 140 miles southeast), and Sequoia National Park (around 240 miles inland). Pro tip: if you are planning a longer loop, filter for unlimited-mileage listings first, it almost always pencils out cheaper than paying per-mile overage.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Ballard%2C%20CaliforniaWhere can I stay overnight in an RV near Ballard?
You have great options for campgrounds near Ballard. Cachuma Lake Recreation Area (about 15 minutes south on Highway 154) offers hundreds of sites including full-hookup RV spots with lake views, managed by Santa Barbara County Parks. Flying Flags RV Resort in Buellton (about 10 minutes away) offers a pool, hot tub, and walking distance to wineries. Rancho Oso RV & Camping Resort near Santa Barbara has rustic charm with horses and creekside sites. For coast lovers, Jalama Beach County Park (about 60 minutes west) is legendary for its remote setting. Pro tip: street parking an RV overnight in residential Ballard is not permitted, so always plan to stay at a campground or on private property with the owner's permission.
countyofsb.org/637/Cachuma-Lake-Recreation-Area/When is the best time to visit Ballard in an RV?
Honestly, almost any month works for RV camping in Ballard thanks to the Santa Ynez Valley's classic Mediterranean climate. Spring (March to May) brings wildflowers, green hills, and highs in the 65 to 75°F range. Summer (June to August) is warm and dry with average highs around 80 to 84°F, perfect for wine tasting and lake days at Cachuma. Fall (September to October) is harvest season at the vineyards, arguably the most magical time. Even winter is mild, with December lows around 37°F and highs near 65°F, and no regular snowfall. Pro tip: shoulder seasons (April, May, October, early November) hit the sweet spot of great weather, lower rates, and easier campground reservations.
weather.gov/lox/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be able to handle it in Ballard?
You'll do great, and first time renting an RV in Ballard is honestly one of the friendlier places to learn. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup covering driving tips, propane, water, slide-outs, and dump procedures, and you can text or call them mid-trip with questions. The Santa Ynez Valley has wide rural roads, gentle terrain through wine country, and short distances between towns like Ballard, Los Olivos, and Solvang (each about 2 miles apart). If you're nervous about driving, book a smaller Class B campervan or filter for Delivery so the host brings the RV right to your campsite. Pro tip: take 15 minutes after the walkthrough to practice backing up in a quiet lot before you hit the road.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/california-driver-handbook/What happens if something breaks down during my Ballard RV trip?
You're covered: 24/7 roadside assistance is included with every RVezy booking through the renter protection plan, so help is just a phone call away whether you are parked at Cachuma Lake or driving up Highway 101 toward Pismo Beach. Roadside support handles common issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing. Your host is also a direct resource for quirks specific to their RV (like how a finicky awning works), and the RVezy support team backs everything up. Pro tip: save the roadside number in your phone before you leave the driveway, and snap photos of the RV at pickup so any small issues are documented from minute one.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Ballard RV rental into other states or across the border?
Yes, interstate trips are generally allowed and many guests turn their Ballard RV rental into a full West Coast road trip, hitting Oregon, Nevada, or Arizona. Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and their insurance, so message the host through RVezy before booking if Canada is on your itinerary. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend across that border. Popular multi-state routes from Ballard include the Pacific Coast Highway up to San Francisco and Redwood country, or east via I-15 toward Las Vegas and Zion National Park. Pro tip: confirm your route with the host in writing through the RVezy message thread before you depart.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Ballard RV trip?
Fuel is one of the easier costs to estimate for your Santa Ynez Valley adventure. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 miles per gallon (MPG), Class C motorhomes typically get 8 to 12 MPG, and larger Class A rigs run 6 to 10 MPG. California gas prices tend to run higher than the national average, so plan on roughly $4.50 to $5.50 per gallon in the Ballard area. For a typical 4-day, 300-mile loop through wine country and over to the coast in a Class C, expect to spend $125 to $200 on fuel. Pro tip: top off in Buellton or Santa Maria where prices are usually lower than at the freeway-adjacent stations, and use the GasBuddy app to find the cheapest pumps.
energy.ca.gov/data-reports/energy-almanac/transportation-energy/california-retail-fuel-outlet-annual-reportingHow far in advance should I book a campground near Ballard?
Booking early is the move, especially for popular summer and harvest weekends. Cachuma Lake Recreation Area accepts reservations up to 6 months in advance through the Santa Barbara County Parks reservation system at sbparks.org, and full-hookup sites book up fastest. Los Padres National Forest campgrounds like Los Prietos and Fremont also open 6 months out through Recreation.gov. Flying Flags RV Resort in Buellton can fill 2 to 3 months in advance for peak weekends. Pro tip: if your dream weekend is already booked, set a calendar alert and check back the Sunday or Monday before, cancellations pop up constantly, especially at Cachuma where there's a 24-hour cancellation cutoff.
countyofsb.itinio.com/cachuma-lake/campsitesWhat are driving conditions like around Ballard?
You'll find driving around Ballard refreshingly relaxed compared to most of California. The town sits along Alamo Pintado Road in the heart of the Santa Ynez Valley, with two-lane country roads connecting Solvang, Los Olivos, and Santa Ynez within a 2 to 3 mile radius. Highway 154 (the San Marcos Pass) is the scenic route over the mountains to Santa Barbara, beautiful but with steep grades and tight curves, so take it slow in a larger motorhome and use lower gears on descents. Highway 101 through Buellton offers the easier flat alternative. Pro tip: dense coastal fog can roll in over the pass in spring mornings, if you see a National Weather Service fog advisory, switch to Highway 101.
dot.ca.gov/programs/traffic-operations/road-informationWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Ballard?
Local campgrounds make RV camping Ballard easy and comfortable. Cachuma Lake offers full hookup sites with water, electric (including 50-amp), and sewer, plus an on-site general store, gas station, dump station, coin-operated hot showers, laundromat, swimming pools (open May to September), and the Hook'd Bar & Grill at the marina. Flying Flags RV Resort in Buellton features full hookups, a pool, hot tub, and walking distance to restaurants. Los Padres National Forest campgrounds like Los Prietos are more rustic with potable water, vault toilets, fire rings, and picnic tables but no hookups. Pro tip: the dump station at Cachuma Lake is open to overnight campers free of charge, making it a great last stop before heading home.
countyofsb.org/637/Cachuma-LakeWhat's typically included inside an RVezy rental in Ballard?
You'll be surprised how well-equipped these RVs are. Most Ballard motorhome rental and travel trailer listings come with a real bed (often a queen), a functional kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, sink, and cookware, an indoor bathroom with shower and toilet, dinette seating, climate control (heat and air conditioning), and seatbelted seats for travel. Many include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and camp chairs, and some offer onboard generators or solar setups, perfect for boondocking at spots like Los Padres National Forest. Linens, kitchenware, and basic supplies vary by host, so check the listing's included items list. Pro tip: message the host before booking if WiFi, a generator, or a specific bed configuration matters, many will add those features for a small fee.
fs.usda.gov/recarea/lpnf/recarea/?recid=11407What add-ons and pickup options should I know about for my Ballard RV rental?
Hosts offer a fantastic range of add-ons that make your trip easier. Common options include linen and kitchen packages, camp chairs, propane fire pits, bike racks, generators, paddleboards, and even pre-stocked groceries. Pickup and dropoff is usually at the host's home in or around the Santa Ynez Valley, but as mentioned many offer delivery directly to Cachuma Lake, Flying Flags, or your private property in Los Olivos or Solvang. Mileage policies are set per listing, ranging from around 100 miles per day to unlimited, and standard rental periods run from 2-night minimums up to multi-week stays. Pro tip: filter for Instant Book if you want to lock in a campervan rental Ballard quickly without waiting for host approval, perfect for last-minute wine country weekends.
visitsyv.com/How does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay through the RVezy platform when you book (never directly to the host in cash), and your card is charged the rental total plus the protection plan and any add-ons you selected. A separate refundable security deposit is held at the start of your trip and returned after dropoff, assuming the RV comes back in the condition you received it. Deposit amounts vary by listing and are clearly shown before you confirm payment. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos and a short video of the RV's interior, exterior, and odometer at pickup and dropoff, this 5-minute habit makes any post-trip questions about your deposit fast and painless.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best road trip destinations from Ballard?
Ballard is an outstanding launchpad for a California RV road trip. Santa Barbara's beaches and Stearns Wharf are just 35 miles south over the San Marcos Pass. Pismo Beach and the Oceano Dunes are about 50 miles north on Highway 101. Big Sur's iconic coastline is roughly 200 miles up Highway 1 (about 4 hours). Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks sit around 240 miles inland for big-tree adventures. And family RV trip Ballard favorites like Solvang's Danish village and Ostrich Land USA in Buellton are 5 to 10 minutes away. Pro tip: build in a stop at Nojoqui Falls County Park (about 20 minutes south), it's a short, kid-friendly waterfall hike that locals love and most visitors miss.
