Bear Valley Springs camping overview
Bear Valley Springs is a gated community in the Tehachapi Mountains of Kern County, California, sitting between Bakersfield and the Mojave Desert. The community itself does not host public campgrounds, so RV travelers base out of nearby Tehachapi and the San Joaquin Valley floor near Bakersfield. Elevations in the surrounding mountains run from roughly 4,000 to 7,000 feet, which keeps summer temperatures cooler than the valley and brings occasional winter snow.
The closest RV options cluster around Tehachapi, about a 20 to 30 minute drive from the Bear Valley Springs gate. Indian Hill Ranch RV Park sits on a private ranch off Arosa Road at roughly 5,000 feet elevation, with full hookups and pull-through sites. Mountain Valley RV Park serves travelers wanting a more developed in-town base. West of the mountains in the Bakersfield area, Orange Grove RV Park and Resort, Bakersfield Travel Park, and Shady Haven RV Park offer flatter terrain, milder winters, and easy access to Highway 58 for the climb up to Tehachapi and Bear Valley Springs.
Things to do near Bear Valley Springs
Tehachapi Mountain Park, eight miles southwest of Tehachapi off Water Canyon Road, has hiking on the Nuooah Nature Trail and a ten-horse corral adjacent to the Horseshoe Campground. The Tehachapi Loop, a famous railroad spiral, draws railfans to a viewpoint a short drive from town. Brite Lake Aquatic Recreation Area offers fishing, day use, and small-craft boating in Brite Valley. The Pacific Crest Trail crosses the Tehachapi Mountains nearby, with day-hike access points off Highway 58. Tehachapi sits inside the Tehachapi Mountains AVA wine-growing region, with a small number of tasting rooms. For travelers based on the valley floor near Bakersfield, the Kern County Museum and Murray Family Farms are common family stops.

Tehachapi calls itself the Land of Four Seasons, and the mountain elevation makes that real. Summers are warm and very dry, with valley-floor parks near Bakersfield often climbing into the upper 90s while mountain sites at 4,000 to 5,000 feet stay noticeably cooler. July is the warmest month, with average highs near 88 degrees Fahrenheit in town. Nights cool quickly because of the elevation, and large day-to-night temperature swings are common.
Winter brings the bulk of the precipitation. December is typically the wettest month, and snow can fall at the higher elevations around Bear Valley Springs and Tehachapi Mountain Park. Kern County advises winter visitors to Tehachapi Mountain Park to carry tire chains, since road closures from snow do happen. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel, with mild days, cool nights, and wildflowers in April and May. Strong winds are a year-round feature of the Tehachapi Pass area, so awnings and slide toppers should be retracted when sites are unattended.

We used Matt’s RV for three nights outside of Sequoia National Park. Matt set it up before we arrived with mats laid out (a mat lined with twinkle lights) and AC on, communicating with us the entire day and trip for whatever we needed. He was extremely pleasant to interact with and we so enjoyed the cozy trailer! Felt new and clean (modern) and the bed was comfier than our own. Also - blackout blinds which was PERFECT for our little one taking naps throughout the day. The heat was brutal at our location and the AC was so helpful. Fresh towels and sheets were a plus as well. Very homey overall and felt so supported. We had a blast with our one year old exploring the campsite and national park and would rent from him again if the occasion were to arise!

Matthew’s trailer was pristine and worked great for our family with 2 small kids. Communicating with Matthew was easy and fast.

Booking and reservations in Bear Valley Springs
Private RV parks in the area, including Indian Hill Ranch RV Park, Mountain Valley RV Park, Orange Grove RV Park and Resort, Bakersfield Travel Park, and Shady Haven RV Park, are booked directly with each park by phone or through their own websites. Indian Hill Ranch operates as a self-pay park and does not always take card payments, so calling ahead is recommended.
For public land, Tehachapi Mountain Park is run by Kern County Parks and Recreation. Individual and family campsites at the park are first-come, first-served with no reservations accepted, while group areas like Tehachapi Mountain Camp and Sierra Flats are reserved through Kern County Parks. Fire restrictions are in place at Tehachapi Mountain Park, with no campfires allowed and only propane BBQs and cook stoves permitted. Holiday weekends and the spring and fall shoulder seasons fill earliest at private parks, so plan four to eight weeks ahead.
What to expect on arrival in Bear Valley Springs
Roads into the mountain campgrounds are narrow and twisty. The route into Tehachapi Mountain Park is a two-lane mountain road that becomes steeper and narrower as it approaches the campground, which can be tight for longer rigs and trailers. Indian Hill Ranch sits at about 5,000 feet, reached by paved access roads off Arosa Road.
Expect full hookups, laundry, hot showers, and a dump station at the private parks around Tehachapi, while Tehachapi Mountain Park is a dry campground with pit toilets at elevations between roughly 5,500 and 7,000 feet. Cell service is generally good around Tehachapi and weaker once inside the mountain canyons. Wildlife in the area includes deer, coyotes, and rattlesnakes in warmer months, so food storage discipline matters. Bring layers year-round, as nights are cool even after hot summer days.
