Campgrounds and RV parks near Buellton, CA

Days fill quickly here. The Santa Ynez Valley wine region surrounds Buellton, and tasting rooms in nearby Los Olivos and Solvang are minutes away. Families often combine wineries with stops at OstrichLand USA and the Danish bakeries in Solvang. On the coast, El Capitan State Beach has tide pools, a swimming beach, and the flat Aniso Trail running north to Refugio State Beach, an easy ride by bike or stroller when fully open. Refugio adds picnic areas and kayaking in its protected cove. Gaviota State Park offers a fishing pier, the short hike to Gaviota Hot Springs, and the Wind Caves trail above the coast. Backcountry trails extend into Los Padres National Forest from each of the three state parks.

The Santa Ynez Valley has a Mediterranean climate, with warm dry summers and cool wet winters. Late spring through early fall is the busiest stretch. Summer days are clear and warm inland at Buellton while the coast can sit under marine layer fog, especially in June. Highway 101 traffic and campground demand peak between Memorial Day and Labor Day, when El Capitan State Beach is often at capacity and Gaviota State Park books to its six-month window. Seasonality also dictates which campgrounds are open. Gaviota State Park camping operates seasonally from April 1 through September 30 and is closed the rest of the year. Refugio State Beach stays open year round, but from December 1 through March 31 regular campsites convert to walk-in only and group camps require a Special Event permit. El Capitan State Beach and Flying Flags accept reservations year round. Fall, after Labor Day, tends to offer the best balance of warm weather, lighter crowds, and more available sites.

Flying Flags is a full-service resort with full hookups, pools, a restaurant, a small grocery, laundry, and family programming, and it accommodates larger rigs. The state parks are a different experience: no hookups, fire rings and picnic tables, flush toilets, and coin-operated showers. RV length limits matter. Gaviota State Park typically tops out around 27 feet, Refugio State Beach around 30 feet, and El Capitan State Beach lists a maximum length of 30 feet for motorhomes and trailers. There is no dump station at El Capitan or Refugio. Cell service is limited at Gaviota. Winds at Gaviota can be strong, and skunks and raccoons are active at night across the coastal parks, so food should be stored securely. Dogs are allowed in campgrounds and day-use areas but not on state park trails or beaches.
